Here's an interesting little tidbit. If you own a PlayStation 4 and were wondering how to transfer data over to your PS5, Sony's got you covered. As discovered by Polygon's Samit Sarkar, the retail box for the PS5 has instructions on the bottom that tell you how you can bring over your profile data and more to the new console.
It seems pretty straightforward. There are a number of ways to do it; either hook both consoles up to your network, connect your external storage to your PS5 (if you have one), or sign into PSN on the PS5. You'll be able to transfer "gaming history and trophies, as well as profile and friend information".
You'll of course be able to transfer your games as well, either by using a local network between the consoles or by simply re-downloading your PS4 games on PS5. Sony is aiming to make the transition to next-gen nice and smooth, and this is just a little more evidence of that. Who thought we'd be checking the bottom of the packaging for information!

Pro tip for everyone, what you do is you lift out your PS4’s hard drive, get a magnet and wave it all over the hard drive. You then put it in your PS5 and all done!
I'll use psplus for cloud save transfer, if we put ps4 to sleep overnight it should automatically upload all our games saves to cloud right?
Very intrigued to see if I could get PT on my PS5 this way! Still got it on my PS4 and want to sell it but if there's a way of transferring it over I'd really like to do it.
Cue xbox posting on twitter on how to transfer your game saves to xbox series, and it just being this;
step 1: boot up console
step 2: sign in
step 3: play game
@nessisonett As Funny as that is dont do that stuff you be surprised how many idiots there are. 😆
@Richnj Xbox have games? That's news to me.
@artemisthemp Xbox 360 games and EA games.
@nessisonett do I do the magnet thing before or after I submerge it in water? I feel like i'm doing something wrong
@artemisthemp Well they now have Obsidian AND Bethesda so I have a feeling Fallout 5 is going be the best entry in the series. We’ll see!
They didn’t have games so they just started buying all the game developers.
We have to have both running and on the same network? This is far from convenient.
Sony made transferring data from the base PS4 to the Pro really easy as well so it's no surprise the transfer is easy to the PS5.
@glassmusic really? just because MS owns them doesn't mean Bethesda will magically be able to make a decent game. I mean, other than perhaps Halo (which MS ruined) what quality titles has MS released? Quality games have always been their weak point. MS and Bethesda is a match made in mediocrity for game design as far as I'm concerned. LOLz.
Just ask them nicely, it's that simple.
@glassmusic won't really matter since I don't plan on getting an Xbox just for Bethesda games.
Xbox 360 I can justify for Tales of Vesperia, but it hardly cost anything compare to Xbox Zero
Wait wait wait wait ...
So if I just log-in to my PS5 with the account I used on the PS4 ... doesn't that bring all that data automatically? (trophies, profile data, etc.)
And what does he mean 'connect the external storage' to the PS5? An external storage containing what? An external HDD doesn't have profile information as far as I know - only game data. It doesn't even contain the saved game data!
The Xbox has a much better system for transfer to be honest. You simple place your new Xbox Series X next to your old Xbox and it will kill the old Xbox and then consume it along with it's power and save files.
@nessisonett i can actually do that to mine and have no issues. SSD for the win!
@deathaxe Ooooh, so you have to backup the data, not sync it. Makes sense.
I read that as 3 different ways rather than 1 stated in the article. @quintumply
So you can either connect to same network and transfer
Or use external storage
Or sign in and download profile etc.
Otherwise if that was all one process then you'd be required to buy an external drive.
The key was "in the following ways"
Any sign of the folks from this site getting something through the post today?
@Richnj
What do you mean? I thought the game still needs to be transferred to the new console on Xbox too, and the save is just read from the cloud in the same way right? (or, I assume, can be transferred over WiFi or usb device like on PS5). Then, hopefully, the dev has made it so it can be used on the new SKU.
@deathaxe hopefully they get one. They do some solid work on this place
In other word, just sign in.
Thanks for the tip 🤓
Did Hideo Kojima design the packaging. Getting MGS1 vibes. Hopefully Meryl's codec is on the box too
@thefourfoldroot Well I was just poking fun at how xbox have been doing their own versions of the "how to share a game on PS4", and it just being a simple straight forward task.
@wiiware I’ve found that not all of my saves upload automatically for some reason. Probably best to manually upload the ones you really care about
@solocapers You're quite right, I'll adjust the text.
**Sigh** sadly it looks like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X are out of the question for games and apps again (Blu-ray will do it as long as you are doing bitstream output to a compatible receiver).
I know it's because Sony wants developers to use it's Tempest Engine for 3D audio, but Disney+, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, etc. won't use it - they use Atmos.
Looks like Xbox Series X for app streaming it is!
Also, it seems odd that you would need your PS4 on the same network to transfer content that should be connected to your PSN profile anyways (friends information, trophies, game history, etc.).
Will transferring from PS4 to PS5 format the PS4? I'd like to transfer but keep all games and saves on both so I can put my PS4 in another room.
@Nickolaidas Back up your PS4 saves on PSN, then download them on your PS5.
As for your games, plug an external drive in to your PS4, move the games to that, then plug it in to your PS5 and play away:

@Iroha They own Bethesda AND Obsidian. If those two work together on a Fallout game, yes, I believe it will be incredible.
So, can I just use my PS4's external hdd with all games in there already?? Like plug it onto ps5 and launch from ps5. Cuz for ps4 games I see no reason to clog ps5's ssd, it's only 640gb available for user.
@Iroha Whether you like them or not, Bethesda has managed to produce many games that get both high critical scores and high sales.
Fallout 4 and 76 are actually the oddities, rather than the norm. And even then, FO4 still reviewed well with critics, even if fans were mixed, and still sold something like 13 million, do there's definitely some audience there.
MS does have a spotty record, but they have released a lot more than just Halo. But as you can see above, there's a willful ignorance about what MS has actually published and what IPs and studios they own.
@glassmusic Sony has been buying studios since 1993 so....
@__jamiie I really don’t know why people are trying to turn my comments into fanboy flame war crap. I just pointed out that M$ realized they didn’t have games, so they started buying up publishers to ensure that they do.
I’ve never owned nor will I ever own a M$ console, and I’ve bought every PlayStation within the launch window. Why people are trying to paint me into the green corner here I don’t know.
You brought up the topic of Microsoft buying studios not me. You also call Microsoft, M$. Is that supposed to be an insult to them? Funny? It seems the kind thing a fanboy would say.
You also said that you will never own a Microsoft console. If you're not a fanboy that seems like a ridiculous thing to say. The definition of a fanboy is someone who blindly follows without accepting that a competitor may be better, whether it's now or in the future.
If you truly love games you shouldn't care which platform they're on.
@__jamiie The only thing ridiculous here is calling someone a fanboy because they're not interested in the consoles that a company makes.
I own an xbox, a playstation and a switch because i like games. I also dont replace letters with dollar signs, refer to people as some kind of horse or only play games for kids. Ok, occasionally i play kids games (im looking at you Natwest money saver island or whatever its called).
@naruball Someone who mentions Microsoft as M$ sounds either childish or a fanboy. Someone who says that they will NEVER own a console from a competitor sounds either childish or a fanboy.
I own all current gen consoles and most previous gen consoles. This isn't a brag or boasting. I'm just trying to say that I love great games regardless of who developed it or what platform it's on.
The person mentioning flame wars and M$ clearly doesn't and is clearly a fanboy.
I don't understand why you disagree.
@Sissyrobyn996 Obviously I hope you are correct. Microsoft has given what are likely to be intentionally vague statements on the matter in regard to Bethesda exclusivity.
@Shstrick It's kind of a hassle but I guess that's better than finding out the save is gone.
@Rob_230 took me ages to realise which box meryls codec was on... My stoner brain at the time didn't think to check the game box, and it was only when I dropped the box and it landed face down that I saw it 😂
So in other words, i still have to pay PSN subscription in order to transfer my save files to ps5?
@__jamiie there is nothing to understand. You just made a baseless assumption. That's all there is to it.
I don't like Apple as a company and I will never buy an iphone or one of their other overpriced devices/accessories (I'd use them if they were given to me for free, though). Based on your false criteria, that would make me an android fanboy, which couldn't be further from the truth.
Same with others who won't buy a new Ninty or Ms console. There could be a million reasons why they don't want to, without being Sony fanboys. For example, I don't think I'd buy a Ninty console (though I used to as a kid and even got a 3ds 8 years ago as an adult), because their games remain at full price, unlike Sony/MS or PC games.
@naruball It's not a baseless assumption at all. It's based entirely on the childish use of dollar signs and someone saying they will NEVER buy a Microsoft console but is proud to have bought every PlayStation during the launch window. Preferring one brand over another is very different to pledging allegiance to one brand for now and forever regardless of what happens in the gaming landscape.
PS5 right now seems to me like a PS4 Plus, and that's not a bad thing at all. Making the transitition between "generations" as smooth as possible is only pro-consumer.
I have 2 accounts / user profiles on my PS4 Pro so I can access the UK and US stores. Will the two profiles be transferred to my PS5 in this way?
I am a fanboy...unrepentently sony fanboy all the way untill the very end but that does not mean i hate micro$oft at all and i wish we could have gears of war...but we have god of war...for the win..
