UK Sales Charts: Avengers at Number 1, But Sells Less Than a Third of What Spider-Man PS4 Managed

the poor sales are GREAT news. it shows that there is still a lot of interest in single player games like spiderman and many gamers want nothing to do with GaaS and anti-consumer business practices. i expect this game to fall hard in sales over the coming weeks as the player base realizes how bad this game actually is.

So Avengers sold less than a third of Spider-Man despite being multiplat? That’s not good for them at all.

quite dissapointing that tlou2 has disappeard from the charts..but i think it has easily passed 5million copies so far (+digital).

More anticipated than Cyberpunk 🙄

Glad to see the gaming community hasn't been suckered in and I'm not surprised to see a game thats designed from the ground up to be fun is more successful than one designed largely with future monetisation in mind. Hopefully this is replicated elsewhere and it can be a lesson to publishers that these cash grab bandwagon jumping games aren't what we want.

It's amazing that spider-man ps4 sells better although it's an exclusive only on ps4 compared to avenger on ps4/xb1/pc. Also congrats again to sucker punch, people really like this game

@Porco I heard the single player story is good but the gaas part is boring and not as good. I'm interested in the game but not at full price, maybe I'll wait until it's $30 or $20 next year.

I was assured by these forums that the strength of the Marvel brand, and the fact it was mutliplat would mean big sales for the game.

Also, The Witcher 3 is back? But how?, it's not a Marvel game or GAAS? Only these things sell well in the games industry /s.

@Kidfried I would be inclined to agree. I don't think this is anything to be concerned about or for critics of the game to celebrate. Without knowing digital sales, which is how I and most of the people I know purchased the game or global numbers, I think it's a little early for any real determination of success. It did debut at number one and will only improve over time I think. For what it's worth, I have really been enjoying it and plenty of others too. Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics deserve a lot of well-deserved praise!

Maybe that beta really killed it off? Who knows without that beta sales would of been higher?
Still waiting for my rented copy to arrive but hope the player base is strong for quick matchmaking for a while

I'm genuinely still surprised GTA V is still a thing. It hasn't been removed from the charts in forever, yet I know zero people that say they still play it.

I didn’t think I was missing out with either of these games to be honest. I ended up picking up WRC 9 instead as I’m more of a fan of Rally but may pick one of these games further down the sale line.

I can't remember reading a single thing positive about this game. I suppose having "Marvel" on the bow is the only reason this game sold.

Can't wait for Cyberpunk, that game will rock number 1 at every single chart worldwide

@kyleforrester87 oh I don't mean to say that nobody plays it anymore, it is definitely still popular enough to make decent sales! But the ratio of "I hear about it from other people" to "how well it does in the sales charts" just seems a bit off.

@Cutmastavictory the single player experience is gimped in favour of the multiplayer. so no. also, what kind of gamer would i be if i supported this product and everything it represents (i.e. all the bad aspects of the gaming industry). gotta vote with your wallet sometimes.

@wiiware unfortunately, the single player portion of the game is only 10 hours or so in length... in terms of value, it just isn't there for single player gamers. also, it is really basic and can't hold a candle to spiderman or the batman games on any level. just seems like a disappointing product all around in my opinion. but yea, i'm sure there is some fun to be had for some people at the right price point.

@Porco You can play all the content solo with ai team. Clearly you haven't played the game. The unnecessary hate is pathetic from the fanning community. But y'all pick and choose.

That's just physical sales right? I'd expect given the trends this year that it has done far better digitally. Everyone I know who got it (5 people) all got it digitally, and most of them are usually physical release only people as they're old school. Either way I hope those who got it enjoy the game, and that the monetization is too bad for you all.

Nothing to do with Gaas. Marketing never made it seem exciting and the Beta did not do it any favors.

And some like me are simply waiting for more content.

This is only physical sales right? Yet I do not understand how gta5 is there? I mean they may still be making tons of money in multiplayer but those are digital sales. These numbers seems off, a 5 year game cannot still be in the top 10. Uts weird

That's not exactly terrible, Spiderman sold amazingly, I didn't buy it but as a service game the amount of content pretty well depends on it doing well so hopefully it's successful enough to be continually worked on and I may eventually buy it

@Cutmastavictory oh yeah, sure... for 20 levels... then it’s lather, rinse and repeat for the ‘grind’... I beat the game in 3 days and I wasn’t even trying, I expected a nice long campaign full of fun storylines... don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate the game, just a little disappointed. I don’t do online multiplayer, nor do I ‘grind’ out the same level over and over and over and over... if I liked that type of work, I’d be in a factory.

@Lodogg3323 I just beat the story today. I don't mind grinding if its fun. So we'll see if I enjoy it here.

@Richnj also the Witcher 3 being included in gamepass is also helping sales as whoever never got into it or never bought it could get a free trial and try it out if ya like it you can buy it with an extra 20% off with gamepass. Despite unpopular beliefs gamepass sky rockets game sales I know this because the developers for The Descenders were shocked of how much the game is selling while it being on gamepass so much so they couldn't show the exact graph because it would make it look like the game wasn't selling at all before gamepass.

So its a 3rd of the sales on ps4.. but the game is released on Xbox and PC. Guaranteed they sold more

@MarsChamp It's possible it didnt better, remember the ps4 edition has Spider-Man included because... some suits figured that would boost sales. And both madden and nba 2k have just come out.

Tony Hawk has been the first "new" game I've been super excited about all year. Next one will be Pikmin 3.

It's probably worth noting as well that a whole lotta folks have lost their jobs between then and now, so there's won't be as much disposable income going around. Though admittedly I don't tend to follow the charts so have no idea if sales have fallen generally over the last few months.

There's no point arguing anything or anyone until the end of the year, and we have Spider-man MM and Cyberpunk out.

Really enjoying Avengers. Have finished the main campaign and have done a lot of engame activities and not once have i had to play in multiplayer.

@Porco The whole game including all endgame content can be played in single player. Also the campaign is much longer than 10 hours as there are individual mini campaigns for each character which take awhile to do.

@Cutmastavictory If they just use the game as a base, keep adding more characters and storylines, I’ll like it more. I’m about to delete the game and go back and restart the campaign again... because I apparently missed a DNA key on the Titan level... and as of yet, you can’t go back to replay them. That’s a bit annoying. Especially after getting Kamala and Tony up 15/45 with some epic gear. I’ve also opted not to buy the battle pass, as spending another $60 after spending $60 to buy the game seems ridiculous, especially for cosmetics that don’t affect the game. Other than those complaints, I did enjoy the game.

I love hearing Avengers not selling great. Any time a live service game might fail makes me happy.

@Flaming_Kaiser Yeah, I'm quite happy about that. I've not actually played the xbox or PS versions yet. I've only started the Switch one. So I get to play and enjoy the game on Switch, then get to experience the super duper version later on.

@Trisque I've got a theory its that it like a coming of age game! When someone gets to 14/15 and there parents think they are grown up enough for adult games, they tap the parents up for a copy. Evergreen market as new waves of kids get to buy gta all the time

Yeah I'll get Avengers when it's 20 dollars in two months. That's what mediocrity is actually worth. If you don't think the game is mediocre then you are simply being dazzled by the license.
