Despite its inherent ties to J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world, the Harry Potter author is not involved in the creation of Hogwarts Legacy. An FAQ page published by Warner Bros mentions that, while her “extraordinary body of writing” will form the foundations of the release, “this is not a new story from J.K. Rowling”.
Instead, it’s an original tale that will see you “experiencing life as a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry like never before”. Given that its set during the 1800s, there’ll be no cameos from key heroes like Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, though supporting characters like Nearly Headless Nick will still be wandering Hogwarts’ hallowed halls.
The game is being published under WB Games’ new Portkey Games label, which has been established as an independent entity to expand upon the Potterverse. “Each experience offered under Portkey Games will take place in the Wizarding World,” the FAQ adds. “J.K. Rowling is supportive of Portkey Games and has entrusted the design and creation of the games to WB Games and the developers involved.”

This message has been updated from a previous version to make clearer Push Square's stance on the topic:
Hogwarts Legacy does not exist in a vacuum. There are important discussions being had about the views and opinions held by the creator of the Harry Potter universe – views and opinions which we do not agree with.
Our goal is to create and foster a positive environment for people – all people – to discuss and celebrate video games, not to amplify ignorance or provide a forum for unconstructive arguments. As per our community rules, we do not accept any form of hate speech on our platform.
I'm sure she'll complain about it in Twitter.
Good. I can't believe that that monster made such a wonderful series...
I wonder why they are randomly trying to distant themselves from Rowling now 🤔🙃
The game itself looks great, I want to see more but it definitely has the potential to be special.
I appreciate this and I’m sure many others do too. Trans people will always be valid, unlike mouldy old women teetering on irrelevancy.
Very cool, but will she be getting royalties from it still? Not 100% how this works, but if so I'll pass.
@kenyowa yeah surely the employees at Portkey Games deserve to be punished.
My daughter just told me stop but I'm tapping reply anyway. I apologize already, I just can't help myself.
@Juanalf because the game is now confirmed and out there and JK Rowling has been saying and posting increasingly more inappropriate and unacceptable stuff. So they don’t want their vision tarnished with the same brush
@kenyowa so because one horrible person created a franchise, anyone else who creates a piece of art in that world needs to be punished cause of her. Yes she may get royalties, but what about the hundreds of people who’ve spent 4+ years making this much requested and dreamed of Harry Potter RPG?
Pretty difficult to seperate JK from Harry Potter I’m afraid. However much they may want to.
@Jacko11
Have the RPG makers denounced JK and her nonsense? Are some of the proceeds going to LGBT charities? Otherwise they just look complicit at best.
It's great to know they're reassuring the Tumblr weirdos, since that's the audience Potter caters too.
People can cry all they want to. She will still get a huge check from this. This is a world she created and she will always get royalties for the rest of time.
@YoshiYoshi Unfortunately. But it's still reassuring to know this game will have the fingerprints of passionate people who respect the lore and not someone who retroactively retcons ***** on Twitter every waking hour of the day to be more current with the times despite being a vocal transphobic piece of garbage.
@TheFrenchiestFry Interesting how people are perfectly happy slagging off Sapkowski and insist the Witcher games are brilliant and don’t need his input but they’ll simp for Rowling.
@Juanalf there is nothing random about it. She has made numerous public comments using trans-phobic rhetoric and has made a tone-deaf decision to write a new character who is a cross-dressing killer, which is the sort of regressive and lazy narrative which demonises vulnerable people and quite frankly belongs back in the 80s.
Gay and trans folk don’t need a white woman of privilege pontificating about their lives.
@Fandabidozi not making a statement makes the developers complicit? That’s a reach.
It’s more likely the publisher has made a decision that Rowling’s views are going to hurt sales and everyone should distance themselves from those comments.
Whether or not they should do this morally is a different argument. I think they are morally responsible to speak up but they might not be able to do that due to NDAs or other contracts.
... one wrong missclick and you are monster... and that's how internet works.
anyway, I don't care if jkr gets royalty or not, I care if game is good or not!
@djlard making repeated awful comments about vulnerable people is not a miss-click.
Does this game let me create my own wizard, but then half way through transition into a witch, who then transitions into a cat and cries in a gender neutral toilet?
I've not read up on what she said other then I know it's upset many. But I believe an IP like this should not be constantly handcuffed to it's creator and should allow many creatives the chance to put their own stamp on things that keeps it fresh.
I can say in great certainty that in 100 years time, JK Rowling will be remembered only for creating a magical world and not for any comments she made on social media or for her choice of character in a new book that no one will remember anyway.
If you can create a trans character in the creator I'll consider them having successfully distanced themselves from her comments. Don't think they'll go that far though.
@HMazzy111 People still remember Lovecraft’s views, in fact they’re more referenced now than ever.
“J.K. Rowling is supportive of Portkey Games and has entrusted the design and creation of the games to WB Games and the developers involved.”
It'll be funny if they added a trans character after this statement.
Maybe it could cameo a young girl named Albus Dumbledore.
I never really cared for Harry Potter, too many incongruities and contrivances for my taste, but the game looks really cool. My fiancée loves Harry Potter, so there's that.
@Holijay I think you're a wizard if you're a boy, and a witch if you're a girl. I know you can make your own character, and I doubt the restrooms will be gender neutral. It's the 1800's after all.
Imagine my disappointment when I visited Rowling's twitter page expecting vicious anti-trans screeds and instead scrolled through endless posts of her commenting on children's drawings.
@nessisonett Racism was a prominent aspect of Lovecraft's life and art. It's pretty much impossible to read something like The Shadow over Innsmouth and not see a neurotic preoccupation with the idea of racial purity. And, of course, you have poetry and whatnot that's unambiguously racist.
No parallel really exists with Harry Potter and themes surrounding gender and identity. Unless Rowling gets into some hardcore anti-trans activism, I don't think triggering people on twitter for a few years is going to lead to her permanently staining her reputation.
Maybe it could end up sticking if she doesn't shut her gob eventually. I get the sense that she's one of those people who ALWAYS needs to have the final say in an argument.
Pheww, two HP articles in a row where I needed to bring some snacks... Although the other article has now disappeared from this site. Who used their, ahem, magic wand?
Who could imagine concern for the safety of women in private spaces would be so controversial? JK is still an inspiration to many (perhaps even more now that she has stood resolute and dignified during all of this. Not seen a single hater be able to construct an argument against what she said beyond the usual empty buzz words and "youre not nice reeee" shaming attempts. Glad to see a fair few on here not swallowing the ideological hate pill.
@Kev_Morrison Calling her a monster for what she wrote shows how low we've come as a society. These people don't know what a true horrible monster really is.
@JRRR92 Repeating it here since you've been repeating what you said from the other article and in case it's useful for people who missed it in the first article: "Gender is an amalgamation of several elements: chromosomes (those X’s and Y’s), anatomy (internal sex organs and external genitals), hormones (relative levels of testosterone and estrogen), psychology (self-defined gender identity), and culture (socially defined gender behaviors)".
Even with chromosomes, did you know that the masculine traits come from a gene on the Y chromosome and NOT the Y chromosome itself? And sometimes the gene isn't present so even a person with a Y Chromosome STILL has female phenotypes? Which is primarily why in some cultures/countries there's a third gender where a child is born without female phenotypes but develops male looking traits as a preteen that doesn't actually produce anything. People like you who claim "science is science" cracks me up because you all CLEARLY got your basic information from high school biology and run with it for the rest of your lives without ever trying to understand the nuance. Science is messy, nothing in life is ever clearly delineated as, "Things are this, and that's that". We're taught the chromosomes as a foundation but you need to build on that foundation.
Pushsquare why are you feeding into this crap
People are allowed to have there own opinions.
Jk did nothing wrong.
People who get mad at her need to calm down.
Her profit margin on anything potter related things is already known.
Out of every profit she will make 60%
So if you have a videogame of 60 bucks after shipping tax and such.
Out of every 10 dollars she gets 6.
So expect a season pass or movie related dlc.
@JRRR92 what happens in china at the uyger muslim camps is something what really matters that need to be talked about.
Not something that got someone feelings hurt.
@JRRR92 @Starkei thank you
@YoshiYoshi and quite right to.
@JRRR92 well said sir was thinking the same thing when I read that "monster' comment
Thank goodness the mean lady wasnt involved, I can enjoy the game now....wtf
Fortunately I can easily separate the art from the artist. Fez is one of my favourite games, but that doesn't mean I agree or endorse the viewpoints of the creator. You could do the same with this. I think she has made some unsavoury comments, but whatever, just ignore it.
She could make the vary same argument Trans people made, "your denying my existence". They even try and change the word Woman to things like Womxn etc, it's nonsensical. The people who overreact to this sort of stuff are immature children who cannot control their emotions, no critical thinking.
Don’t know why they’re trying to distance themselves she’s done nothing wrong and I’m no fan of hers. If anything I respect her for at least standing up for biological women, something that apparently makes you a monster lol get real.
J.K. Rowling has managed to be hated both by the right and the left. It's hilarious to watch the reactions as if she's killed people's mothers.
At any rate, big fan of the franchise. I will definitely get it at some point, if the reviews are favourable.
@Fenbops People are so quick to "cancel" or criticize others that they dismiss all the great things they've done in the past. Acting as if they're perfect until something they did comes out to bite them in the butt (looking at you, James Gunn).
@Shinishii Not really. She's likely be happy to see a trans character, since she's spoken positively about them. Her issue is more nuanced than that.
@Brydontk excellent and very informative post. Just wanted to say thanks!
@naruball exactly. It’s worrying how many people, even in this comment section, have jumped on her for daring to speak out in defence of women. The worlds gone bananas.
Crikey Moses, the ignore button is getting a workout this morning... so much hate.
Hi Pushsquare, you know that your community rules state “ Do not post offensive remarks towards others; Show respect for all users, remarks about racism, sexism, origin, creed and handicap will NOT be tolerated and will most likely be deleted by staff, and the poster will be warned, suspended or banned.”
Why is both blatant transphobia and racism being left up for discussion without consequence? Unlike the game this topic is about, we do not live in the 1800s...
@Raspberries Blatant transphobia lol. Saying a woman with a penis isn’t a woman is considered transphobic, that’s how crazy and pointless that word has become.
Also they know what they are doing posting these articles, they want the clicks and comments even if they have to go through them and delete a few.
@Fenbops as a gay man, with trans friends, i fully agree.
Its all ***** clickbait.
@The_ghostmen There is also the persecution of Christians that's been going on for a long time. No one ever mentions that for some reason?
Game looks great, can't wait.
@Starkei women aren't allowed their own safe spaces now, and to suggest otherwise makes you transphobic apparently.
The far left really are as insufferable as the far right. There's no discourse at all, if you have an opinion that isn't strictly in line with theirs you'll get called a "phobe" or some sort. It's tiresome.
I don't like JK very much, she tries too hard to virtue signal but she did nothing wrong here. In fact she's factually and biologically accurate in her statements.
@Arnna Show me these comments.
@Starkei unfortunately In cancel culture a lot of people don’t actually take time to find out what was said or listen to views. There are so many people with truly evil views and atrocities happening in the world. What she said was not “attacking vulnerable people” like many claim. A lot of straight white men seem to want to cancel her over it.
Funny that.
If the biggest enemy the trans community have is JK then the world has come a long long way when I wasn’t watching.
As this is regarding victims of sexual attacks and their fears it should be dealt with sensitively and even if people perceive her fears as misguided being sexually attacked is something you never get over. She should have got support and reassurance and a discussion not cancelling. Sexual victims are the most vulnerable in the story.
I don't care if she isn't involved in the game, the HP ip is hers so she will profit off this existing and I can't morally support that.
She has become the face of the anti-trans community online, and at a time in both the UK and the US where trans rights are being pushed back, the fact that JK uses her massive platform to push such hatred and lies simply maginalises us trans folks more.
Such a shame, because before she went fully unhinged I used to quite enjoy the world she created.
@Ralizah Her Strike novels have two prominent cases of anti-trans fuelled stereotyped characters. I mean, stereotypes aren’t new for the woman that gave us Cho Chang, Seamus Finnegan and Viktor Krum but there we go. In her new books, there was first a trans killer who she notes as having an Adam’s apple, hands jammed into her pockets and an aggressive attitude. The ‘hero’ of the novel then tells her that if she doesn’t surrender he’ll get her sent to jail and it “won’t be fun for you. Not pre-op” so hooray JK for defending all those sexual assault victims by making her protagonist threaten a trans woman with prison rape. Her latest book features a cross-dresser who dresses up as women to kill women. This is eerily similar to the attitudes she’s shared on Twitter that amount to ‘trans women are dangerous to ‘real’ women’ and yet again shows that media is not a vacuum and your attitudes will creep in somehow. The murder rate of trans women in Brazil, for example, has risen by 70% in the last year and them being painted as dangerous by JK Rowling, somebody with vast influence, absolutely does not help. This isn’t even about her Twitter nonsense anymore, she’s putting pen to paper in an attempt to perpetuate harmful stereotypes. And yes, she’s using a male pseudonym which means she’s a woman using a male name to paint women who used to be men in a bad light. The irony surely must not be lost on her.
@zupertramp @Jacko11 By the time this game comes out, the rank and file employees have been paid for this project and moved on to the next one. The only people getting a scrap of the sales money are the director, executives, and JKR herself. Please bring your nonsense elsewhere.
Love the books, but due to her recent shenanigans i think that's probably for the better.
What happen to jk, Did she says some stupid things on twitter or what? (nowadays if there's some outrage, it's usually because of twitter).
Popping more popcorn...
@kenyowa “bring my nonsense elsewhere”? Sure.
How about their reputations?
Imagine the game is excellent, but nobody buys it. Imagine the game is a 8/10 or above game, but some media outlets politicise their reviews and down play the quality based on personal or corporate feelings.
What happens then? Bad reputation, studio closures and jobs lost.
“Bring my nonsense elsewhere”. I’d say the same to you but i’m not a child. Maybe educate yourself a little more and buy the game and support the developers
@nessisonett So it is not ok to make a trans evil character but it is perfectly fine to make white straight evil character?
So if Voldemort was trans then it would be so outrageous because we all know that trans people can't be murderers or any kind of evil. How dare she create a murderer crossdresser!
Silence of the Lambs did it and it was ok. Buffalo BIll was a trans character that killed and skinned women to make himself a woman. Why is it not ok now?
"That creative fiction paints a minority is a bad light so it must be stopped." - this is what it sounds to me.
As you said many time the world is really going downhill.
When my dog misbehaves, I use a negative marker and withhold reward for that behavior, but I continue to reward for good behaviors. Rowling's adult books don't deserve any attention or money. HP though? Are we going to ignore the immense good that HP has done for so many people? Rowling deserves her royalties for HP. And frankly, HP is bigger than her at this point anyway.
If you're feeling squeamish because some of your money for this game goes to Rowling, ask yourself how much of a cut she's getting from the (assuming) $80 you'll spend on this game. Surely no more than 25%, and probably much less on each individual copy. So you gave someone reprehensible at most $20. Ever shopped on Amazon? How about at Game Stop? No one has perfect ethics. If you want to feel better about balancing the scales, why not donate to a pro-trans support organization after purchasing the game? If that's too expensive for you then it's possible you care more about being outraged than taking action.
@Zuljaras Actually, in the Silence of the Lambs book and in a deleted scene in the movie, a Johns Hopkins sex-reassignment surgeon argues that Buffalo Bill is giving genuine transgender people a bad name. So yeah, you clearly know that story inside out.
@nessisonett So what? Every character from every race, gender etc. could be given a bad name. There should be no restrictions when it comes to villains. Or it is ok only when the villain is straight, white and male?
That is my point. So the outrage is absurd.
@Zuljaras I agree with you, it is ok to make a trans character evil. Trans people aren't automatically good people, they run the gamut just like everyone else. However, there are not enough examples of good trans characters in creative works at this time. This lack of representation means that making an evil trans character contributes to skewing public perception. The danger is particularly bad if the author engages in tokenism and frames the character using dehumanizing or outdated stereotypes, because then the character becomes a non-representative caricature masquerading as a true representative of that community or culture. People outside or unfamiliar with that community or culture can't tell the difference between the two.
@Zuljaras So how do you feel about the film, "The Birth of a Nation" from 1915, where the main plot (or a large subplot, can't remember) involved a black man (played by a white man in blackface) kidnapping a white woman and proceeding to try to assault her?
@naruball Thank you for the comment appreciation! =]
@Zuljaras JK Rowling has written 5 detective novels. In 2 of those 5, a ridiculously proportioned number, there has been a trans or cross dressing killer. Both depictions were steeped in stereotype and fearmongering. Of course trans or gender-nonconforming people can be baddies but there needs to be a nuanced take, not the skewed viewpoint of somebody with a vendetta.
@Zuljaras And how many decades ago was Silence of the Lambs published? Attitudes have changed since then.
You are also entirely missing @nessisonett’s point. Rowling has argued quite vociferously that she believes trans women are “men in dresses” who simply want to sexually assault women in public toilets. Her ignorant views have quite clearly influenced her work.
@Jacko11 It is on David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Games (and ultimately of Portkey Games), to figure out how to recoup any losses and repair their reputation. It's an internal issue and frankly not a problem that consumers have to consider.
@Brydontk Never watched that movie. But even so I do not know what people want.
This representation issues are going nuts.
To say that trans and all other kinds of lifestyles should be painted only in positive light is ridiculous and I do not support it.
@NoxAeturnus I do not think that representation will fix those issues as it is very veeery small minority of people and catering to it will not bring anything positive.
@nessisonett
If an author decides to make Buffalo Bill v2.0 it is ok. If people do not support it just don't buy it.
Also almost every book or media is made by either supporters of an ideology or those who oppose it.
This will not change as long as people exist.
@mookysam As I said it is her view and if you do not support it do not buy it.
Also biological men should not participate in sports with biological women. Am I transphobic for thinking that way?
@Zuljaras Caster Semenya is intersex. If you think that testosterone makes somebody a man or woman then does that mean women who have testosterone surges due to illness or the menopause makes them transition into men?
@nessisonett I do not know what makes them transition and I do not care.
I see that men are taking the first place in weight lifting competitions and it is not ok.
The way you feel should not be considered when you talk about biology.
@Zuljaras I mean, people said the same thing about black people around the time Birth of a Nation came out. You don't have to see the movie to have an opinion on how they depicted a black man in the movie.
I brought it up to make the point that this is something that always happens with disenfranchised groups. There always comes a point where, during a struggle for their rights, representation is crucial to their livelihoods. So when you have someone come out and villanize the group, via Birth of a Nation or Rowling's new book, then it sets the movement back because it has the potential to influence people who don't know better. Black people don't inherently want to attack white women, trans people don't want to assault people in bathrooms. Honestly, if people wanted to assault people in bathrooms, they would just do it. Makes no sense that they would need to transition first.
PS. Plenty of LGBTQ advocates agree the Olympics thing needs to be discussed. No idea why you think that's a gotcha. So no, that specific point doesn't make you a transphobe. Everything else does. I think the current consensus is maybe they should be under hormone blockers for a certain number of years before they can compete because the hormone blockers tends to shred their muscles and body frame until they're essentially the same as a cis woman.
@Zuljaras The way you feel? These women are born with medical conditions that affect testosterone levels! How is it any different from Usain Bolt being born with faster legs?
This looks to be a safe statement to make from Portkey, as one, it offers those offended by Rowling, an "out" to still play the franchise, while those that support her won't feel alienated at the same time. Probably about all they can really do...
Ultmately, throwing the team under the bus, isnt doable from a business and job point of view, so this is as safe as they can be without completely ignoring the comments and /or coming across as having a bias one way or the other.
Discussion about such an important subject matter should always be encouraged, its just a shame that in this instance, the game and the devs are going to get some collateral damage and its with little fault of their own doing..
@nessisonett So Usain Bolt is born with the medical condition of "faster legs"?
He is just in amazing shape and have the body of a champion.
So if he want to be a woman it is ok to go and run in the woman's division?
@Zuljaras You’re relying on the exact fearmongering JK Rowling is doing. Trans people literally just want to live safely and freely, they aren’t here to steal your jobs, bathrooms, sports or whatever else nonsense you’re spouting. When they’re being murdered at a record rate then comments that they’re dangerous or in some way the enemy just don’t help.
@nessisonett This game is also not adapting anything from the books so clearly they're both in the same boat. Just leveraging material from the source to create new stories. Not really giving a pass to either but I'm interested in how they explore this particular time period because I think it even predates the Fantastic Beasts books
@Zuljaras Ok I get that you don't agree with trans people but putting stuff like that on the internet is just a big no no
If you don't like them just don't vocalize your lack of understanding for why they chose the route they chose because it just makes you look no better than the exact kinds of people who are purposefully ignorant
@nessisonett I agree so read my last comment. I am not advocating against such people. But I also believe that such creative works are NOT making it worse for trans people to live freely.
The countries in which that happens have very low standards and their communities are quite basic.
@TheFrenchiestFry I am sorry but freedom does not work that way.
I can say whatever I want in public spaces as long as it is not advocating for violence. Everything else is just people with thin skin.
@Zuljaras ‘Not agreeing’ with trans people is just nonsense. I wouldn’t say I don’t agree with you having black skin or red hair. You fail to understand that it’s not a choice, same as how being gay isn’t a choice. It isn’t a lifestyle decision, it’s just how the person is.
@Zuljaras What's with the straw man argument? And what do you mean by not agreeing with trans lifestyles? That makes you transphobic. Few bigots view themselves as being bigoted. And people making anti-trans statements - such as Rowling with her enormous public platform - legitimises hatred and the actions of people who do carry out violence. You do not have to be directly "advocating for violence" for something to be hate speech.
How is Rowling a monster, I mean honestly. Does she kick puppies or eat babies?, No. So she's a "monster" just because she said something that's factually true? For god sake, people get discriminated in real life much worse than what JK Rowling said, but they learn to live with it and move on, it hurts yes, but as long as you know who you are and not to give in, you can overcome it. Get off Twitter or Tumblr, and go into the real world.
@mookysam @nessisonett Ok I will try to make myself clear.
I do not agree with participation of trans people in sports. Or using services that are made specifically for the one sex or the other like bank loans for Women business or things like that. That is what I mean by lifestyle. Probably I explained it badly.
Everyone could live as they like long as it is not making problems in someone else life.
I do not want to have another "hormone", "testosterone", "science" discussion. This is not the place for it.
Let's talk about the games people!
@oldschool1987 Because the world has gone crazy. People have become nonsensical and delusional.
@wiiware She stated facts. Trans women are not biological women and real women should have their own safe spaces. That's it.
@kenyowa but what if this was your favourite studio. And you choosing not to buy the game in a similar situation resulted in closure and no more of your favourite games.
Would you not consider it? Or is it not your problem as a consumer?
Cause you’re clearly in this space and not a regular everyday uninformed consumer. You’re on here commenting on games, you obviously seem to or claim to know how things work internally to some degree, so how can you possibly ignore this?
Seems ignorant to me.
@Jacko11 If I didn't buy it and the studio closed down, it is not my fault. You cannot fault consumers for the internal managing of company money. When Nintendo had a net loss in Q4 of 2014, the company survived without mass layoffs by having President Satoru Iwata, the rest of the company's board, and several of the well known veteran developers like Shigeru Miyamoto take a pay cut. If this project ends in failure - and despite the growing boycotts, I doubt it will - it would similarly be up to executives at Warner Bros. and AT&T to figure out how to deal with it.
So to answer your question simply: I'd be upset, but it is a matter out of my hands. My personal $70 will not make or break a game studio - neither will my decision to withhold it.
@Zuljaras Yes we have to stop all of those men transitioning to being women just so they can get a decent rate on a bank loan :-/
@TheFrenchiestFry "Ok I get that you don't agree with trans people but putting stuff like that on the internet is just a big no no
If you don't like them just don't vocalize your lack of understanding for why they chose the route they chose because it just makes you look no better than the exact kinds of people who are purposefully ignorant"
In another words. If @Zuljaras have a different point of view, he must to shut up because you don't like it. That's literally the "freedom of speech" of the liberals. You have freedom of speech only if it fits in my narrative. If not, "is just a big no no".
@nessisonett I imagine the murder rate of transwomen in Brazil rising probably has a lot more to do with Bolsonaro and the revival of fascism there than the Harry Potter author writing cross-dressing villains into her mystery novels.
I mean, trust me, I get it. Going through her blog writings and twitter history, it does get a bit old seeing this "feminist" complain about "dehumanizing language," and then proceed to peddle the old 'a transwoman is a man in a dress who wants to rape your daughter' canard, even if she's savvy enough to only hint at it. Having people imply that you're a sexual predator because your life history doesn't align with traditional gender norms is about a million times more dehumanizing than some article talking about "people who menstruate" or "people with vulvas."
With that said, I don't know that I'm comfortable comparing her to someone whose entire work is reflective of his neurotic white supremacist worldview, and I think trying to have a dialogue with people like her instead of canceling them is probably a better way of not turning this into another culture war issue, which is ultimately bad for transpeople living in less socially liberal areas.
@kenyowa you're right, if a game does poorly it probably has no impact on the company or its employees.
Also she's probably already been paid.
But please, keep prattling on about your moral superiority on a device likely rife with conflict minerals, in the comfort of your slavery-stitched clothing. I get it, you're the best human being ever because you've virtue signaled that you won't buy a video game.
@JRRR92 Oh, I though she says something worse.
I do love that people call jk Rowling transphobic, yet to my knowledge she has never been charged with this crime. Merely deemed guilty in the court of social media (mainly twitter).
She was a hero a few years ago for revealing a main and popular character of her work was gay (dumbledore). Now she is deemed a villain for merely criticising that tampax were labelled ‘for people who menstruate’ rather than women.
Jk has written strong female characters (hermione) who are smart and independent and is most likely a feminist (given her age she probably grew up when the movement gained traction). There is nothing wrong with that.
JK is a role model and has done more to improve child literacy (due to her books being fun to read) than any other book or author in recent times.
Jk has never been actively hostile or said anything specifically discriminating about trans people.
People complain that there aren’t enough trans / gay characters or that they’re poorly written. Then moan when said character is a villain or killed off. Can’t have it both ways - or you know you could stop moaning and write your book.
@Constable_What Ah, true. But should we be making a game set in such a backward and bigoted time period? Seems highly triggering as it glorifies a time of great inequality and tries to airbrush it with modern wokeness.
@Holijay as if today's not backward some places. How would a trans couple get on booking a room in dubai? Why don't people get on their high horse about that
disturbing to me how people want to play what she said as transphobic I'm not the biggest fan of hers but she said nothing wrong.
@Arnna her privilege comes from writing great books you know work.
I didn't get nearly enough snacks for this ongoing comment section!
Game looks fantastic but I'm not giving a cent to this woman if I can help it. I'll possibly pick the game used down the line.
As for anyone saying "but the employees..." these employees rarely get paid royalties.
@Tharsman sigh, I don't think anyone is suggesting the employees will get royalties. It's more so, what does the product they're creating have to do with her bigotry? I mean really, I'd absolutely understand not buying her books but stuff like this... it just feels too far removed. Why not boycott all things WB as obviously they contribute to her continued viability?
@Holijay Gonna play devil's advocate here, and say that the 1800's were the good ol' days.
I mean, child labor laws?! Wack.
@zupertramp - because - I - won't - give - her - more - money.
It's not a secret she gets royalties from absolutely anything that has the Harry Potter IP on it.
If you don't care, knock yourself out. Buy 100 copies, buy one for everyone that says they won't buy it if you so wish, but please, stop bugging those that are expressing a personal choice.
And I'm NOT boycotting "all things WB" I plan to preorder the upcoming batman and Suicide Squad games. I just won't direct my personal money at her.
@Tharsman I didn't say you were boycotting WB, I'm merely confused as to how supporting them isn't giving her money* but I didn't realize my attempts at a dialogue were such an imposition so I'll leave it alone.
*Edit: Having thought about it further, this wasn't even what I was after. Actually I felt your comments on employees and royalties were a misrepresentation of others' previously expressed views. A misrepresentation I sought to clarify, while expanding on where exactly I was coming from. Not sure why you're acting like I'm badgering you into changing your position. That's really not the case.
Okay, now I feel better.
@Morzy Hmmm, I wonder how Dubai is about that. I know Iran has a high rate of trans people because as a culture they rather you transition than be gay.
@kenyowa individually maybe not, but people who follow the same path as you and boycott because of one person could ultimately lead to the downfall of others.
It like you’d stand here and die on one hill because ‘f**k JK Rowling’ but I bet you supported others despite controversy just because you didn't care enough to speak with your wallet.
Its just a flawed way of thinking and not supporting a game made by hundreds because of one clown who created that IP is ridiculous.
You should come down from your ivory tower and live in the real world. Maybe stop buying your clothes, mobile devices and everything else in your life. Cause i’m sure protesting how those are made isn’t a big deal to you is it? Voting with your wallet only counts when it suits huh, when its ‘cool’ to follow the crowd.
I've never seen a more disgusting comment section on any gaming site.
Trans people aren't your enemies, they aren't trying get into women's bathrooms to assault them when they themselves get assaulted in male toilets. Just because something isn't appealing to you doesn't give you the right to attack it.
Just be nice.
I wish she was involved. I know people don't like her, but it still doesn't take away that this is a world she created.
@EchoRange yeah, I'm pretty sure none of the people sticking up for JKR have ever met a trans person.
I was pretty ignorant until I met a trans woman in my local tech scene who was looking for software development mentors for an LGBTQ+ tech event. I went there and met tons of trans people and they were just people. Things were a bit awkward when I was looking for the gents toilet, but they'd all been labelled unisex, and then I didn't know if people would be offended if I used the urinals so I just used a stall anyway, but… that was me feeling awkward in someone else's space. And if anything that helped me understand the other people there at the event, for whom in the rest of the world they're in someone else's space. It's just a load of people trying to live their lives and mostly keep their heads down because there's a helluvalotta bigotry out there against them.
People are generally scared of perceived minorities because they're unfamiliar. I've generally had more problems with people who feel like they're not a minority, who don't know what is like to have to fit in, to pass, or to keep a low profile to avoid hassle.
@theheadofabroom thank you, I felt my dysphoria hit hard and it's nice to see people with a clean take.
@nessisonett That ultra high level of testosterone is produced by internal testes... which is an extremely blatant and unfair advantage over biological women athletes. Caster Semenya should competes whith the men or the sports federations could create a third "everything goes" category for people like Caster. It is a question of fair play nothing to do with gender politics.
@nessisonett Trans activists (not trans people) are pushing ridiculous things to accomodate their 1%.
You are going to see a push for transracial rights next and I guarantee you black people will be pissed by this.
@Turbodream Don’t pull the slippery slope crap, it’s literally a fallacy. If there wasn’t rampant transphobia at every turn, trans activists wouldn’t have to annoy you. It’s as simple as that.
@JRRR92 By Twitter logic, that makes you a TERF, so worse than Hitler.
@nessisonett Trans activists don't "annoy" me at all. I just think they have a negative impact on the acceptance of the trans community by the majority of "normal" people. They represent only the fringiest part so "normal" people think all trans people act and think like them.
I think one Blaire White do way more good than dozen of these activists.
@kiNeMs it takes a simple google search to find them.
@EchoRange it’s not even worth replying to half these bigoted idiots. The real question is why people living their lives in their most authentic way triggers these people so much. Has no bearing on their lives. Might have some bearing on their own narrow views about what is ‘just’ and ‘right’. Willing to bet the vast majority of these trolls are white cis men who live in a bubble. That’s being generous.
The arguments about how gender is only based on biology really just highlight how ignorant and uninformed these people are. Conveniently doesn’t mention gender dysphoria. Distills the whole issue into the most simplistic terms.
It’s best not to join an argument with no understanding of the issues.
@Turbodream yeah right. ‘Fair play’ wrapped up in a seperate agenda.
@Turbodream there is zero evidence that trans athletes have an regular advantage due to their biology. There are numerous other factors that add up to being a champion athlete. Hormones being a small part of this.
@theheadofabroom much love to ya.
@nessisonett sorry but I have to make the joke about 'slippery slope' arguments also being a bit phallusey.
You can thank painsomnia-brain for the inappropriate dad-joke
@Arnna Also, would trans men just not play sport then? In their eyes, they could only compete in the category they were assigned in at birth but then trans men would have an ‘advantage’ over cis women due to being on HRT? Like... are we gonna sort people into testosterone levels like weight divisions in boxing?
@Arnna I want to know the comments that you mention here.
"She has made numerous public comments using trans-phobic rhetoric"
@Turbodream I knew it! My mom was right!
@nessisonett well you already seem to sort people based on arbitrary melanin / hormonal differences and deny any content of individual character... so why not define by testosterone? You've gone much more absurd than that already, friend.
@arnna Because it's important to stand up for truth, regardless of whom it might offend, before we end up in one massive conservative hell-pit. The 'no advantage in sports' claim is utterly preposterous and you know it is.
I would wager that no one here wishes harm or offence on anyone, regardless of identity, but it's time to push back.
@Starkei push back against what? Decency to other human beings?
@Turbodream Blair White is a sack of *****.
@Arnna Well, the thing is I did not mention gender dysphoria because it is kind of controversial in some areas of the Internet.
DSM-V already switched GID to gender dysphoria and there is already talk for the next edition to cut it all together. Some would argue that gender dysphoria is akin to the homosexuality label of the old DSM.
I would assume it is useful for health insurance's reasons but some trans people are saying they are experiencing very few dysphoria or not at all. So, sorry dude/dudette, get off your high horse. It appeared you have been transphobic too!
@EchoRange Let me guess. She's evil because she vote Republican. I'm sure you have listened to exactly zero of her videos.
It's amusing reading posts calling for human decency and to just be nice, and the same poster calling people bigoted idiots and another labelling someone a sack of ****. Delicious irony.
@Akimi This is why nothing will ever change. Positive feedback loops over the damn internet.
GG unlucky.
@Arnna Pushback against comments like that. Bending - though in fairness more misunderstanding or misinterpreting - language and context in attempts to gain a moral high ground that doesn't belong to you. Critical theory is yet another product of 1930's Germany the world would be better off without. Pushback against people feeling so cowed to speak about things that they start identifying with the right against their best interests (as happened in the UK).It all matters. Stand against hate. This is not hate.
@HotGoomba Christ almighty get a grip you wet wipe
@Arnna ever heard of caster semenia?
@EchoRange no of course not but people are also allowed to have an opinion without it being cancelled by a minority of morons
@Mikey856 what? I don't even know what you're saying honestly...I'm not even mad; just confused.
Eh whatever I'm not fighting with you on a 3 day old article.
@HotGoomba Hitler was a monster bin laden was a monster.. jk Rowling is nothing like that pair of monsters. Get it?.
@Mikey856 Well yeah that's true. I still hate her, but she ain't no Adolf.
The last of my popcorn has been popped.
@HotGoomba you hate her because she has an opinion not because of something she’s actually done. Seems infantile but that’s the mindset of the progressive agenda isn’t it I guess
@Mikey856 yeah true...
Why was one of my comments deleted? It was there when the article was first posted? I don't feel my comment was offensive at all. Is only one side allowed to express their views? I don't understand why it was censored? Was it a mistake?
