The Last of Us: Part II launched in June, but revealed as part of the July NPD report, life-to-date dollar sales of the sequel are already the third-highest in Sony history. This means that only Marvel’s Spider-Man and God of War have sold more in the United States so far, and both have been available significantly longer.
Despite topping the charts in the June NPD report, Ellie’s sophomore outing managed to finish fourth in the sales period spanning July 2020. It’s currently the third best-selling game of the year in the United States, behind only Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. So much for those boycotts, eh?

Ive never actually seen a boycott on any movie or video game work. In fact boycotted media usually ends up being massive. Its almost like trolls dont actually represent the general public. Interesting...
Just here for the nonsense comments about how the story is sh 1t and that sort of balls
Game of the year for me. Hands down.
@Andyhunter132 The more popular something is, the more negative attention it garners as well. So boycotts and petitions only happen with games that are going to sell very well regardless.
This game was a perfect and natural progression from the first one. We see Joel as the loving father in the first, only to have his world shattered. He hardens and becomes who he becomes, which the story shows through nuances and some of Joel's statements, is not a good person. Ellie is his redemption arc. Part II shows us what becomes of that and the consequences.
I think it's a perfect sequel.
This game really surprised me with its length for a wide linear game. Playing from different perspectives and seeing where everyone is coming from, putting you in difficult situations doing things you don't want to, among other things makes this game a unique experience. Not to mention the satisfying combat and all round gameplay, plus a story that doesn't turn out to be what people expected, graphics etc makes this the best wide linear game ever!
I’ll definitely not purchase future TLoU titles blindly again. I loved 1, disliked 2.
Fully deserved. This is an incredible game and brilliant followup to the first.
That boycott worked out well lads, good job.
Sales do not equal greatness.
That said, it's still a pretty good game overall, and it's really nice to see how well these Sony titles are selling.
Was Just a vocal minority. Great game, always knew it would sell well after playing it
Tons of story lines I would love some extra Story DLC for.
@LN78 a dedicated forum..... ooooohh! If you hate it that much why are you on a comment thread about how well it’s doing other than to talk said nonsense. Which is exactly what your post is. Take care love x
@Noob_Saibot Zzzz.
When a hyped game is bad, it's not the game itself that's suffers, but rather the sequels, just like watchdog 1 and knack 1 that sells good but the sequels sells less than the first game at the early life of it (when the game still priced $60). I don't think future tlou 3 early trailers will send fans into a frenzy like tlou 2 early trailers.
The first tlou sells like 17M, I wonder if tlou 2 can sells like that.
@Noob_Saibot Yup, as a fan of the first game I'm actively avoiding the spoilers, imagined my suprise when playing the game story. ND is my fav sony 1st party devs from prev gen to this gen, but after this game I don't care about them anymore.
@get2sammyb Tlou 1 is one of the best games ever in my opinion, and I only played it maybe about 1 years ago on ps4 so it's not nostalgia or anything like that. I really don't like tlou 2 story, the gameplay is good but I nearly hate all the characters in this game. They're either boring and I don't care about them (jackson people) or I just straight up hate them (wolf people). The characters in this games do some crazy things with insane logic (like ellie and abby cancelled "revenge"), with really impossible plot convenience (rescued by the person that you want to kill, forgetting leaving a freaking map on enemy base).
@LN78 I don’t need to. It’s an article about how well the game has done. It doesn’t need defending though obviously you feel that your viewpoint does to the point you see my post as ludicrous. You did exactly what I said would happen
I went into it not really sure what to expect (nothing got spoiled for me), and I was blown away by its ambition, creativity, and level of detail. Stellar game. Deserves all the financial success in the world.
Cool!
👍
It's an amazing game, can't praise it highly enough. It's a shame that not everyone enjoyed it but hey that's the way it is sometimes!
@Noob_Saibot
1)Which other sequal to a great game doesnt
2)Show the article where it was a Joel and Ellie game it was a game about revenge.
3)All of them have massive advertisement campaing except the small niche games.
4)
@Weebleman easily so far, I've not played anything close to its standard, story or gameplay wise
@Noob_Saibot Uncharted 4 dropped 78%, most big games have huge drops especially with a massive launch. It wasn't advertised as the Joel and Ellie adventure and as a fan of the original this was better on every way
The game is years ahead of anything right now..it's value will be appreciated in the long run...
I know I'm not the only person in the world that actually prefers Part II to the original but some days it sure as hell feels like it!
Maybe that's why I love it so much, that I was slightly underwhelmed by the original and the story didn't amaze me. If I had been a huge fan of the first game perhaps I would feel more negatively about it's sequel.
Also, whilst I like Joel for me the main heart of the story was always Ellie. She was the one that brought out Joel's softer side. Joel is great but I rate male protagonists like Geralt and Arthur Morgan far higher. Maybe that's another reason why I didn't feel angry early on in the game and enjoyed playing as Abby later on, seeing her side of things.
I definitely plan on replaying the first game and seeing if this will change my opinion. For me Part II is one if the boldest sequels of all time, not just in games but films or TV shows. Speaking of which.....
Starting to really look forward to the HBO series, think it has massive potential. Really hope they do a good job.
Definitely benefited from being a sequel to such a brilliant game, and being extremely heavily marketed (as well as conveniently excluding a certain character in trailers). I wonder how much the leaks had an impact on the game's sales.
Still yet to get it. Played the first one and enjoyed it but as I came late to the party the hype had raised my expectations so high. The negative press on this one has lowered my expectations so hopefully will enjoy it more than the first. Fingers crossed. Thanks for tempering my expectations vocal minority.
Let's see how well the next naughty dog game sells, shall we.
@Kafkaesque Oh I imagine it will sell very very well. They make very good games after all with no MTX and very few glitches.
Some people might be rubbing their hands together at the prospect of ND becoming obsolete but I suspect they will end up very disappointed.
😜
@Noob_Saibot get over it already. You really sound pathetic.
Grow a pair of balls, mix it in the real world with people other than yourself and expand your mind.
Stories are not there just to cater to you.
Also, I saw no marketing which claimed it was a Joel and Ellie adventure. I mean, who CARES?!?!
@Kafkaesque why?
@Spinachie ...mix your balls in the real world with other people? Now that’s some solid advice!
Good for ND. Personally if they ever announce TLOU3 i wouldn’t be that interested after the latest game. It was way to long, I was actually bored playing through parts of it and the story was laughable in places.
Would be interesting to see how many felt the same about it and see if sales would drop off with a third instalment. Who knows unless it happens!
@Spinachie oh look. Another lemming
@Kafkaesque You call them a lemming but go on constantly about ‘pandering’ and other buzzwords that you heard somewhere being used by a neckbeard. Utter hypocrisy.
@Kafkaesque We get it, you don't like Naughty Dog. But do you really need to come into every single comments section related to the subject and cause an argument?
@nessisonett yes dearie because everyone is like yourself and draws their opinion solely from others. Couldn't possibly be I played the game and made up my own mind. Yawn
@LiamCroft ohh I apologize. I'll leave you to your echo chamber, little fella. After all word are violence and all that jazz
@Kafkaesque It's kind of hard to say anything about people review bombing a game and looking for a workout schedule that disproves their point about a character. Those same people complaining will probably buy the next naughty dog game. Also what false advertisement, the game looked liked it was always going to be mostly about ellie to me.
@jbreez00 if you don't know about the blatant false advertising re. switching character models in trailers etc then that's on you. Not my place to inform you, bud
Not being too much of a fan of the original I wasn't expecting too much going into the sequel. That said part 2 absolutely blew me away. They took a pretty generic zombie story from the first game and did something very unique with it. It's definitely the most I've been invested in a video game's story in years. I think the people that pick apart and dissect every last micro detail in TLOU2 simply hold this game to a different standard. 90% of video game stories really aren't all that good, and no one really cares. But when it's TLOU and when it's Naughtydog all of a sudden everyone brings out their magnifying glasses and wants to tear it apart. It's like the same thing that happens with Star Wars. People are very selective with what they want to hyper analyze and with what they will forgive or gloss over
@Kafkaesque Nah thats not how this works, you brought it up so thats your job to provide an example of the thing you claimed happened. If you cant thats cool though.
@Kafkaesque Please do, thanks!
@Kafkaesque Actually you didn’t play the game and make up your own mind. There are comments by you as early as April saying that the game is ‘too political’. You then apparently ‘cancelled your pre-order’ after the leaks despite having moaned constantly about the game for a good few months before it released. And you actually mentioning the work conditions and crunch culture? Here’s an absolute gem from you talking about that at the time. Good job, you absolute disingenous bawbag.
@nessisonett pre-owned copy sat on my shelf right now. Courtesy of a friend. Made it 8 hours in before calling it quits. I guess your conveniently constructed narrative is preferable though
@Kafkaesque You’re misconstruing. I’m saying that you made up your mind about the game months before it released. It’s incredibly obvious to anybody with two eyes and willing to dig through a couple of months of negativity.
@nessisonett I had opinions before playing. After playing those opinions were confirmed. I knew I'd hate the story, but I wasn't prepared for just how unbelievably dull the gameplay would be. Also did I mention crunch culture alone? Nah pretty sure I listed a few reasons people were pissed at ND.
I hope that one day I can click on an article about The Last of Us Part II and read the comments and it doesn't descend into a slanging match.
Probably only a fool's hope.
😉
Can't wait to go back and replay for the platinum!
Hi guys. Can we please turn this comments section back to the topic at hand, rather than continue arguing? Some like the game, some don't, everyone's entitled to their opinion. Agree to disagree, and stop provoking each other, please.
It's the weekend, let's all play nice!
@Kafkaesque Have you ever played a ND game before? It's pretty much the same gameplay but they've just refined it over the years and added to it.
I think the gameplay was massively improved over the first one.
How strange.
🤔
@Kafkaesque So you knew you’d hate it and only played 8 hours. There we go, now everybody knows that your word is worth sh*t and you’re looking for an excuse to spout off.
Again, let's cut out the arguments and trolling, or I'll have to start handing out more than just warnings. Come on guys
Well deserved...a great game with bold and memorable storytelling, as well as through-the-roof gameplay and production values. I probably prefer TLOU1’s story, but this was a great sequel.
@Spinachie It was pretty obvious from all the trailers and marketing that Ellie would be the main focus and indeed the shots if Joel made him seem like a ghost or a figment of her imagination a la the Joker in Arkham Knight.
They threw Joel into some trailers as a bit of misdirection, probably thought people would enjoy being 'tricked' but alas they misjudged how entitled some people are nowadays plus the leaks happened and almost everywhere you looked there were spoilers.
@ArmyofOne What politics? Based on all.rhe hype I thought Ellie would end up in a LGBT community where everyone is nice and all the enemies are evil straight people.
Having a gay character in it isn't political, it's a representation of life. Same with the transgender character, which is handled delicately and subtly in my opinion.
Some people's definition of what constitutes 'politics' is very different from my own!
I just don't understand the hate for the game. It would be boring if every game featured a white straight male lead, don't ya think?
@Medic_Alert I’d give it around a 6.5/10. I felt pretty much the same as you by the sound of it.
Also when you look at what it tried to do, make the player feel bad about the idea of revenge and killing, it utterly fails, because that is the most entertaining part of the game, the killing and revenge imo.
Better than the first game.
@Kafkaesque false advertising 🤣🤣
@Col_McCafferty exactly. That is the most frustrating part. What exactly was this agenda? That there was a kid who wanted to be a male? That Ellie was lesbian? What exactly was it?
@nessisonett 🤣 I mean, I do think the moaning about politics comes from people who don't really get to meet people who are different to them. So some balls mixing may help 😉
@Kafkaesque Man everything naughty dog does is first rate. Their attention to detail, their stories, gameplay, even the music are all the standard that about every other studio strives towards. And I'm sick of hearing people talk about the working environment, or "the crunch" as people like to refer to it. In my line of work as a construction worker you have a deadline to finish the job. Things come up during construction. Things get changed. However, the deadline remains. And, when the hour is fast approaching as they say, you do what had to be done. You work extended hours seven days a week. So I don't want to hear a damn thing about Naughty Dogs "crunch". Come work twelve hours on the face of the sun here in Las Vegas doing this kind of work. If theirs is a crunch there then mine is a black hole.
Actually last Vegas is a black hole.
@Noob_Saibot Yup, and if you listen to some people, those numbers and public reception doesn't mean anything.
Can I just say this Grounded Update is awesome, having so much fun messing around with all the renders and modifiers.The void render is insane.
Recommend trying helium sound especially when they sing a song 🤣.
The Clickers and the RK also seem to be a touch faster on Grounded+ difficulty.
Honestly this game is alright. I don't like the story much, but it's not as bad as other people say. I like the gameplay. The first game was miles better. But this one was alright, especially visually. But if I'm negative about this game, it's because of the supposed bad treatment of Naughty Dog employees during development, but the game was alright, not anything I'd go back to, but it's not bad, just kinda disappointing compared to the first game.
@Spinachie
I have never seen such a defense force for a game as what this recieves whenever it is mentioned. People are allowed to dislike something the same way they are allowed to like it.
@Fenbops The thing about trying to make the player feel bad about revenge falls completely flat when you start taking in to account the bodies you just to progress the story. I think I had over 200 by the time I got to tge halfway point, like it's hard to take the story about being obsessed with killing maybe 5 people serious when I've already killed hundreds by the time I got to most of them.
I very much enjoyed it, the tense survival horror gameplay is great! I genuinely enjoyed the world building and the story as a whole (despite a couple of plot points that I found hard to suspend belief for, though I cant think of another game that this is not true of). Up there with the very best games of this gen. I'm very glad I avoided all discussion about the game and spoilers before playing. I'm very glad its sold well and hope ND move on to new IP. Wide linear is the future for cinematic style games and would love Rockstar to have a crack at this style. The story of the first game probably edges the second for me but it doesn't make it any less excellent. If you dont like it, fine. Equally, I do and make no apologies for it. I kinda get fed up of the hate for it bleeding into every comments section of late.
I'll get it eventually, I just don't want to pay anywhere near full price, and also I'd like to play an upgraded version on the PS5, and it's already spoiled for me so I'm in no rush.
@jbreez00 Yeah but Ellie doesn't set out to kill hundreds of people, at times you have no choice as it's either you or them. Ellie had no beef with the Scars, heck she's never even heard of them before venturing into Seattle.
With Abby it's slightly different but she was a soldier, in a war not if her choosing but was trained to think and feel a certain way. In the end she fights and kills to survive but not of any relish and indeed her motivations aren't even for herself but for others.
The game's message isn't simply Revenge Is Bad, it's about so much more than just that. That's a gross oversimplification and is perhaps one of the reasons why there has been such a backlash against the game.
@jbreez00 yeah exactly and an npc calling their friend John before you blow them up doesn’t make me feel any worse about blowing them up. It just fell flat as you say.
If you are reading this you have wasted around 5 minutes on a comment section
Great graphics, nearly the same original gameplay and mechanics, but the story was terrible and I think the hype from the first game carried over to these sales.
Everyone has their own opinion about the game but let the numbers speak for themselves.
@TheArt my feelings exactly.
It's always great to see when quality wins. It's very rare in the world, so it's even more impressive that such an "anti-mainstream" project is so successful.
Just sad that such a terrible story was in a game like TLOU, The f***ing Last Of Us. Not even Ghost of Tsushima could wipe away TLOU2 from my mind. Sigh
Christ there's some salt in here.
@LN78 Nah mate you're well wrong on this one. All the talk before was that it was a game about hate but in actuality it was about forgiveness. Not just forgiving the other but being able to forgive oneself as well, not to dwell on past regrets and any potential guilt but how to deal with grief and not to allow it to destroy you. Of course the game also touches heavily upon the theme of redemption.
In terms of Seattle you have two warring factions hell bent on destroying each other. Why though? Aren't the Infected a big enough enemy? Why spend so much time, effort, manpower and precious resources on trying to eradicate fellow human beings?
Why, because they're different. They're the 'other'. They're a threat. We see this problem in the real world, where people who are different in some way are seen as a threat. To your way of life, to your families, to your jobs. Exist in your tribe and fear or resent or be indifferent to those of other tribes. The sad truth is both the Seraphites and WLF didn't need to wage war on each other, both could've happily co-existed and in fact should've worked together in order to clear the entire city of Infected. Both had perfect bases of operation from which to work from and build safe communities for all. Notice one thing about the island? No Infected.
Jackson, albeit briefly, gives us an example of what is possible. Here we have a safe and functioning community where everyone has a role but all are working for a common purpose. It's as a close to a 'normal' city as is possible in a post-pandemic world.
It's about so much more than just Revenge Is Bad. If you can't see that then, well, that's your problem my friend.
That dropped fast. I'm not surprised. Even the opening of the game is beyond ridiculous.
@Noob_Saibot I've seen a fair few other franchises have divisive entries, and normally the divisive entry itself does sell well, then it's the sequel that takes the hit.
I am sooooo HAPPY for ND With all the hate they have got about the game(mainly from people who don't even own a PlayStation) I am glad it's done well(er of course it would anyway no matter what the haters try to do)
It's funny, this was basically the same as what happened with Joker, but the with the opposite extremists. The people yelling the loudest meant nothing.
Game is good no question about that. I just don’t like so much how these kind of games has become the top you can play on ps4. Too much story, too much directed. Sometimes it feels like playing Dragon’s Lair.
@LN78 Ha ha, what an incredibly open mind you have. You really don't think there is anything valid or true in what I have written? You're really that obtuse and stubborn?
I can even accept that maybe a key character's death could've been handled in a better and more sympathetic manner, that perhaps it would designed for shock value and was overly gratuitous in nature. I've even stated that I think ND underestimated how beloved Joel was fir millions of fans and can understand why they feel upset. Doesn't stop me from loving the game though.
Anyhoo, I've wasted enough of my time discussing this with you.
Peace!
Come Cyberpunk there'd be comments like Witcher 3 is better just like I predicted people saying they like Tlou1 better, same with Rdr1 and 2. It's quite corny sometimes because video games aren't mainly about story alone like movies. With every new iteration there's always an advancement with gameplay, graphics and AI, movies are the same human beings acting. The fact that you're not getting that same WOW effect you got playing the 1st because it was THE FIRST doesn't mean the sequel is disappointing, it's just a natural wow effect on first time everythings. If TLOUII was the first game and part 1 never existed, I'm pretty sure the naysayers would claim it's the best thing that ever happened.
So much for those boycotts, lol.
I'm very happy for Naughty Dog. Now let's just forget the sales for a moment. What is it that makes this game exceptional? I mean, what makes it worth it? Because from what I've heard (from actual journalists I trust, not the "get woke go broke" attention seekers who have quite evidently been shown to be wrong on more than just one occasion), the story is absolutely nothing special and the game is generally dull.
@Mythologue the game has exceptional graphics and production values. In my opinion apart from that there’s nothing exceptional about the game. The gameplay is slightly improved from the original and the story is worse.
Also what ‘journalists’ do you trust cause most had a little sex wee playing this game?
@Fenbops Jim Sterling was one of the first opinions I watched just because I didn't find myself much trusting anybody else. Others I trust have praised the game but I only ever seem to hear explanations as to why the game is bad, not to why the game is good. That is mostly why I was asking.
@Octane I'm sorry, but what!!
The more popular something is the more hate it garners?
I think Ghosts of Tshushima would Like to have a word.
There will always be a small, insignificant group who will moan. But its only a tiny fraction.
But not on the scale of TLOU2. It sold well, yes, but my god did a lot of people return the game very quickly.
Plus, Sony were expecting to sell a lot more copies. Hence the full shelves and no refund policies implemented.
With over 2000 people having worked on the game, Sony's words, not mine, and an insane marketing campaign, I would love to know the break even point for this game.
@Noob_Saibot
Well said. I expected a joel and ellie adventure but got something very different.
The game was fine but i dont see myself ever replaying it.
It's my favourite game of all time. Head and shoulders above anything I've played. The graphic, the gameplay, the story. All amazing. I cried, I was angry, I was reminded of someone I lost who is close to my heart. I did a complete 180 on characters and was along for the whole ride. Incredible game.
Boycotting something (or speak of it) just leads to more interest in the product
@Kafkaesque Don't worry, the second half is worse so you didn't miss much.
I understand The Last of Us love and hate for The Last of Us: Part II. Some people really love making plank bridges and crate floatation platforms. It’s solid reasoning.
@Mythologue The story is great and the game is very far from dull.
These so-called journalists are idiots are wouldn't spot greatness if it came over and bit them in the face!
Some people should just stick to MCU films, Fall Guys and the occasional round of CoD. Anything more challenging than that is clearly wasted on them.
😜😜😜
When Part II cleans up at the end of year awards the salt generated will be enough to fill the Mediterranean!
😆😆😆
@Col_McCafferty So what's great about it?
Enjoyed playing through the game but it isnt a patch on the first and the story really isnt as groundbreaking and edgy and some would have us believe. Certainly not gofy in my opinion
@Mythologue I'm sure @Col_McCafferty will tell you what's great and to add to that I'd say, it's a unique experience you won't find anywhere else. It feels like 2 FULL games in one, half of the game could've been a £30 DLC. Don't wanna spoil nothing but playing from different perspectives and not knowing how to feel about who's right or wrong and everything ultimately feeling pointless in the end IS THE POINT. There were a lot of questions you'd ask playing the first one with no answers and some people view obscure things like that as clever or deep, not me. PartII answers everything. The combat is deeply satisfying, every bullet counts, the intensity of every encounter, THE ROPE. And of course the usual ND ultra realistic graphics, cinematics and overall realism you know you'd hardly find anywhere except a R* game altogether is what makes it great.
@Shamefulswine I dunno what yer yabbing about. TLOU2 is clearly more popular, since even articles about Ghost are mostly comments about TLOU2
Seeing as it's no longer in the top ten it will more than likely not surpass those other 2. And all this proves is lying and conniving is still a masterful tactic.
Actually I see being in 3rd place a failure for this game, it should/could have easily sold more than Spiderman or GoW. The first game was a huge critical and commercial success and there was a much larger audience for the release of the 2nd game. TLOU is arguably the key Playstation game this and last gen, like Halo for xbox, people associate Last Of Us as the standout title, so I think only being 3rd, especially behind God Of War isn't great. This article is spinning it positively, but I'm not sure 3rd would be the target ND or Sony, or even the fans would have expected TLOU2 to end up after playing the first game.
GOTY for me, they improved a lot from part I.
We only know that the game dropped 80% second week on UK but not how much the game dropped worldwide.
Games like Uncharted 4 dropped 78% and God of War 71%, it's normal.
And no, this game didn't sell well because the hype for the first game, this game is selling well because it's an excellent game.
I know some people expected "The fantastic adventures of Joel and Ellie" but we got something more.
And just like every game, a lot of people didn't like it, but is a fools game trying to pretend that everyone hates it or that it is a disappointment because none of that is true.
@Nkuk:
It's third after Spider-Man and God of War because:
1) Spider-Man released on September 2018.
2) God of War released April 2018.
3) The Last of Us Part II released June 2020.
Yawn. The media are still trying to counter the public's dislike of this game with pointless stories like this? All those who don't like the game won't care if it sells eleventy zillion. May as well cut the propaganda now anyway, the game is old news.
@totoekambi
I don't think it will ever get 2nd or 1st. Games these days are marketed to have most sales at or very close to release and then everyone moves on to the next thing. This is a play once and sell game, no multiplayer and no real point to replay as the story is fixed and the same every playthrough, so no reason for people to hold on to the game. There is already a glut of 2nd hand copies that will diminish new sales, the Ps4 userbase isn't going to grow any more, so i think there will only be low volume, especially as PS5 is out soon and attention will switch to the new PS5 games.
I'd just like to say that I'm happy to have enjoyed TLoU2 immensely and the fact that this game is so controversial is just a testament to how powerful it is. Also, people act like TLoU1 is suddenly universally loved. It's not, with many people bashing it for playing it safe (zombies? yawn). You can't please everybody.
@gollumb82 What? Controversy is not a measure of power. If you need any more proof look at the scrubs arguing over wearing masks.
@totoekambi Yep and let's be honest Spidey is No. 1 purely because of MCU fanboys. It's a good game but it's probably one of the weaker PS exclusives this gen, heck I think I prefer Days Gone.
Also, it's not even the best superhero game on PS4. That would be Arkham Knight.
Spidey's story is too short and the map is too small. When you think about it they could've included each of the DLCs into the main story and barely missed a beat. Money though, money money money!
Cant say the same about The Last of Us Part II though, got your money's worth and then some!
People should remember at some point the TV series will come out and this will almost certainly help drive sales, just like when a TV show or film comes out that is based on a novel and this helps shift more copies of the original material.
It was only released in June, ridiculous to call it a failure just because it hasn't already beaten two older titles!
😆😆😆
@Jxburton20
It kinda is. I've never seen gamers argue over any game's plot this much. Ever. The reasons are mostly tied to the topics it touches so I'd say there is a correlation here. I'll take it over another shallow, by-the-numbers experience any day of the week. I realise that some people don't see it that way but hey- games are like any other kind of art. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right? It's just inexcusable that gamers resort to abuse towards those who like/dislike this game or the developers and cast for that matter.
@Andyhunter132 Actually you are wrong. While the boycott of the game was never a serious thing. I would argue that the majority (over 50%) of people who bought this game despise it. The reason it sold so well is because the first game was so beloved. In addition they used false advertising to sell the game by showing you know who later in the game, when that was false. This is a legit crime and I really wish they would get sued for this. The second when people saw the disrespect for the characters and players of the first game, sales tanked. And yes I know sales dropping a large amount is normal in tge second week. But this exceeded normal drop rates with an 80% drop in the U.S. and 85% in Japan. Furthermore it continued to tank week after week. In Japan and all the Asian countries they hate this game. If you look on shelves throughout the world there are tons of copies sitting on shelves. I also guarantee at least 25 to 33% of thise initial sales were returned immediately. This game will never pass Spiderman or God of War.
@Exlee300p you can't sue a company for not wanting to spoil their games story, come on now that's just silly!
@MightyDemon82 Ah yes you can. They used false advertising to sell a game. They could have easily promoted the game without giving anything away. But what they did was put a fake scene in the game to mislead consumers. It would be like Sony saying on the box the console is black in color but instead when you open it it's bright pink.
@Exlee300p misdirection happens in trailers all the time, especially for popular IP's and I'm happy it exists. We live in a world where people spoil entertainment for themselves before they experience it first hand so studio's kind of have to resort to this kind of marketing in order to preserve the way they want the consumer to experience the unfolding of the story. Suing over every little thing in life is daft, should I sue pubs because I don't like football but it's always on when I go to one? Don't like something just move on to something that you do!
@wiiware Knack never sold well. It was heavily bundled.
"When a hyped game is bad, it's not the game itself that's suffers, but rather the sequels"
This is also false. Plenty of games didn't sell well all on their own. Two examples come to mind: Mass Effect Andomeda and the latest Street Fighter, but there are plenty more.
@MightyDemon82 In my opinion, people who sue over such trivial things really need to find some meaning in their lives.
@Exlee300p " I would argue that the majority (over 50%) of people who bought this game despise it"
And I would argue you're wrong. There you go. Argument.
"So much for those boycotts, eh?" Game did well initially, but if it's sales are lower than two Sony games that were released recently, it's not doing that great.
comparing sales with spiderman for me isn't fair...don't forget TLOU is a 18+ rating game..so in theory a minor can't buy it directly.
@naruball What I means is tlou2 is always going to sell really well because tlou1 is really good, but we have to see tlou2 numbers maybe 1 or 2 years later compared to the first one to see if people trully like it or not.
Also about knack, I remember the first one sold good for a family friendly games, that's why sony made the sequels, remember at that time playstation 1st party games rarely sold 10M+.
@wiiware but again, it didn't sell well. It was bundled heavily. That's all. It had a sequel because it was created by Cerny. They gave it another shot and that one didn't do well either. But Knack never sold well on its own. Only through bundles.
@jlenoconel yeah, super reasonable to expect a game to sell better in two months than games that have been out for years.
If people who don't like TLoU2 wanted to be taken seriously, they could compare first month sales or something.
Sales don't mean the game is good. Pokemon sells bonkers and its games are garbage tier.
I'm expecting the MGS events to happen again. MGS was insanely popular, so mgs2 did amazingly well. Problem is they pulled the same crap they did with this game with false advertising, mediocre to laughable story telling, and unlikable characters. Fans hated it. Guess how well mgs3, now widely regarded by fans as the best game in the series, did on its initial release?
People blindly bought this game because the first one was great, it was advertised as another Ellie/Joel adventure (in the game he dies in the first two hours and half the game you're playing his murderer), they even lied about you having to kill the dogs (you literally have to kill a dog to progress). Hopefully this taught people not to preorder no matter how nice their bonuses are. People have now taught them they can get away with it so you know they'll continue doing it.
What we got was a crappy revenge flick that cops out in the end because they couldn't figure out how to reasonably keep Abby alive. So the moral is revenge is bad even if you don't actually get the revenge, unless you're Abby who got her revenge and nothing bad happens to her for it. Most of her crap is defending some trans kid from the big bad religious cult.
If you wanna like the game, go for it. I like a lot of terrible games. Let's just stop pretending it's on the same level of games that actually try to not lie to people, treat players with respect of their intelligence, and not spend more focus pushing a political message for LGBT brownie points.
Ff7r was a much better game with a lot of heart and love put into it to ensure the fans had an enjoyable experience. And if you think tlou2 had an amazing story you've never seen before, play games like rdr2, Spec Ops the Line, Bioshock, horizon zero dawn, persona 5, yakuza series, to name a few. I feel bad for you guys evidently not experiencing much of anything outside this garbage game.
@tinCAT-zero Awe, you took time out of your day to be a smart ass to me, that’s sweet.
@tinCAT-zero Glad to see you are still thinking of me.
@tinCAT-zero Come on, I was having fun killing time. I’m gonna say my next line anyway.
Hey there stalker.
For real though, no problem.
@1_W1NG3D_4NG3L Druckmann flat out lied about tlou2 by inserting Joel in scenes he wasn't in, claiming it would be only about Ellie when half the game isn't (which is why there was a review embargo on half the game), and recording lines only for trailers. You can go Google it right now.
If you Google Ff7r false advertising its mostly people complaining the game wasn't what they expected, not examples of literal false advertising.
It's the difference between getting a pizza but being disappointed it wasnt as good as you were expecting, and being told it is a pepperoni pizza but getting pineapple. And then being told you're probably just a bigot for not enjoying the pizza you didn't order.
Its great game..just like the last of us on ps3..one of the best type games .single player games..and killer graphics..
@1_W1NG3D_4NG3L The issue is that they showed Joel in scenes he wasn't actually in, and used his older model to make flashbacks seem like part of the story. They even had him say a line how he wouldn't let her go alone, only to give that line to an entirely different character. It definitely showed that Joel would at least be a larger part of the story outside Ellie's motivation for revenge, and even implied he'd go with her on at least part of her journey. If you were okay with that, cool, I wasn't because I liked Joel and wanted more of him. Plus then his death scene was lame and required everyone be entirely stupid to make work.
Abby was already unlikable from the start because she crudely tortures Joel to death in front of his daughter after he just saved her damn life. I didn't really care after that how many puppies she pet or trans kids she protected. She was introduced to me as a crazy psychopath who murdered my favorite character with zero remorse. The entire game is like that, where they need something dramatic or stupid to happen and then tell you how you're supposed to feel about it. Even then it was super confused on what its moral and purpose was. The game was fun to play but it's story felt like a mess of emotions trying to tell me how to feel when it itself didn't seem to know.
The story is meh, the gameplay is more of the same, the graphics are triple a quality, I don't get why people act like it's the best game ever made when lots of games have done it way better. Hell, Nier Automata is one of the best stories I've ever seen and it never had to falsely advertise itself to hide its twists or work that hard to make you feel emotions. It's fine to like something and see its faults (hell I'm a pokemon fan) but the people acting like it's sales are another reason critics aren't allowed to hate on this obviously perfect game is baffling. And kinda insulting to the devs who had to actually try to make a good game because they weren't Sony's favorite child.
@1_W1NG3D_4NG3L It's no problem you just asked a question. Lots of people felt cheated by Ff7r, I just didn't because I didn't feel lied to. Here I did feel swindled because they promised me Joel and swept the rug out. I'd been okay with him dying if they didn't show that he'd be around, or had delayed his death for a larger part of the game, or least didn't try to force me to like his torturer/killer.
@naruball Those games have been out for 2 years, which isn't that long. TLOU2 did well out the gate, but since then, when word of mouth started getting around, it stopped selling.
@Noob_Saibot I didn't hear about the week 2 drop being so steep where can I find that data?! Would love to read about it!
@Noob_Saibot Fun fact Avengers Endgame had a massive drop as well. You clearly don't understand that sequels tend to have big drops because most of the people buying it will buy it on launch or around launch, its why Endgame had such a big drop because everyone watched it opening night or week. You can try to spin things as much as you want but the hard fact is the game has been a huge hit for Sony and ND.
@jlenoconel yeah, a real shame it sold 0 copies after it came out.
Also, saying 2 years is not that long is laughable at best. Those games have enjoyed multiple black Fridays and huge sales.
@Noob_Saibot Keep trying to spin things, you lost credibility last week when using metacritic user scores as evidence so yeah.
Wait there was a boycott?
I've seen people get over dead relatives faster than how long it's taking people to get over the last of us 2, goddamn go play something you actually enjoy.
Glad to hear it's selling well, i reckon it will probably reach first place especially after the HBO series helps boost its sales.
And you can find it at GameStop pre owned for 40 right now, I can see it dropping by Christmas. Also, don't forget captain marvel made a billion but it was complete garbage, the same can be said for the last of us 2 which lied about it being a Joel and Ellie story
@Noob_Saibot agreed with everything you are saying. Some people are just blinded by fanboyism
@get2sammyb Nice contribution. Well done.
@Joats8774 Its everywhere dude. Do some legwork yourself. People so lazy.
@ArmyofOne I would have played it if the lead character was a dog named Spot....lol
@Exlee300p The game will pass spiderman when it gets a ps5 remaster. That whole suing thing is also ridiculous.
@Octane not like this. The review bombs actually made metacritic change their criteria for who can actually review games.
