Not only was The Last of Us: Part II Sony's quickest selling PlayStation 4 exclusive ever and the most downloaded title from the PlayStation Store for the month of June, it has also topped the sales chart in the US. NPD reports that Naughty Dog's latest masterpiece was the best selling game for the month of June 2020 and is the third overall best-selling title of 2020 so far. It didn't manage to beat the launch of Marvel's Spider-Man across America, but this is still a very impressive result for Ellie's latest outing. $1.2 billion was spent on the gaming industry in total, making it the biggest June since 2009.
Elsewhere, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare made room for the PS4 exclusive by dropping down to second place, Grand Theft Auto V found itself in fourth position, and Mortal Kombat 11 continues to do well in fifth. The only other new entry was SpongeBob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated in 19th position. We've compiled all of the relevant software charts below.

And yet games need to be more expensive apparently..
I like to think that the haters are just like Ellie in the lead image, having a good cry about this lovely news.
"Quick note: TLOU2 did have fewer days in market in its launch month than SpiderMan. TLOU2 launched Jun 19th with tracking through Jul 4th. Marvel's Spider-Man launched Sep 7th with tracking through Oct 6th."
in summary: TLOU2 had The BIGGEST Exclusive Launch in PS history!
I hope ND make new ip next gen, something fun like uncharted or maybe mass effect like scifi rpg.
@LiamCroft Apparently most of the "so called haters" have moved on already and don't seem to care half as much as you do!
I "hated" the story but I never wished it to fail fyi, but I doubt a potential TLOU III would sell nearly as well. Many people have been burned and even though plenty of people liked the game for what it was, I just don't think that you can hang a marketing campaign similar to the one TLOU II received with Joel and Ellie onto the characters of the second game.
But again, that's just me.
@wiiware I'm sure with their assets and experience in mocap-storytelling a spectacular sci-fi epic would be not only a sight to behold but also a fresh start. Even though I don't like Druckman as a person (without knowing him IN person of course) I'm sure he's perfectly capable of crafting an engrossing NEW IP, as he has proven time and time again. And I love scifi.
I see Persona 4 Golden on that list. The interest is definitely there. Atlus just needs to bring it elsewhere.
It deserves it. TLOU2 has had an effect similar to Dark Souls for me. All other games seem to be lacking something after playing it.
Of course it sells like hot cakes. It's the succesor to the best Playstation Exclusive to date. People pre-ordered the game in good faith and expected the continuation of Joel's and Ellie's Story. I personally liked the first game better but letzts see how good it does in the long run
@liamcroft Can we please stop stirring the discourse again.
@AdamNovice So we all want to be civil now that the shoe is on the other foot.
Lol.
@roe how much they sell doesn't say a lot about how much they cost. We're still looking at the elephant in the room, called "20-year-old pricetags" but most fans certainly don't sound content with buying [what they deem] "20-year-old graphics" for that.
On Russian social media in particular (although I'm too cynical to hope that's not universal as far as fans go), there's also been a peculiar rhetoric that "games have become nothing but cheaper to produce over the years". Now, I can easily assume that select production aspects have - but the sentiment still sounds like someone took a look at all the gamedev asset Humble Bundles and decided that everyone including folks like EA, Rockstar and Ubisoft is working on a similar budget. 🙄
@Tchunga On here yes, dismissing people as haters does no one any favours.
@Scollurio I just hope ND can make good characters again, it's almost hilarious to me that what I feels (as a player) when playing the game is direct opposite of what my characters in the game feels.
When ellie is sad because killing abby friend number 3 or whatevers I was like "heck yeah, I hope that stab to the neck will teach you not to mess with jackson", and when abbie is angry and scared because her friend number 4 or whatever is killed I was like "good, that bullet to the face is a fitting end for him/her".
I don't like this game story, this is the first time I actually hate the game story so much that I have to forget it to enjoy playing the game. The gameplay is good though, so I just pretend this game is a murder simulator and ellie is killing all this people because she really like murdering people
Whether you love the story or hate it, love the characters of hate them, it's still a very memorable game because it gives you all those feelings. Best PS4 exclusive along with HZD, in my opinion.
@nhSnork "$1.2 billion was spent on the gaming industry in total"
The reason the cost of game development has gone up is because the profits have also gone up. These massive companies aren't charities.
I can imagine The Quartering on Youtube is already making a video now about how Sony are making this up and that the numbers aren't as impressive as you think because he hates the fact people like a game he doesn't like.
@Scollurio Metacritic user reviews is still having a tug of wall match over the game, many many "Anti SJW's" Youtubers are still trying to hate and attack the game and anytime anything related to the game is mentioned on social media a slanging match breaks out. Yes the haters still haven't let this go, just yesterday i had a video recommended to me what was putting the game down. End of the day the haters have lost, the game is doing very well and will most likely nap tons of awards at the end of the year.
Remember when you used to have a disagreement then move on afterwards? Pepperidge Farm remembers...
@WallyWest I still don't get why anyone would root for or against a game like their life would depend on it. Even the Youtubers I regularily watch have moved on. I believe what you say it's just that I personally haven't experienced it. Also I never experienced alphabet-phobia or something like it.
But yeah, apparently there are plenty of people who can't let go, no matter the topic.
@wiiware lol I SO get what you mean. Nice approach to still getting something out of the game, haha. I remember when I was a youngling I played "Syndicate" on my friends Amiga the exact same way. Murdersimulator!
@AdamNovice As much as certain people seem to dislike outrage and heated debates, but you gotta be honest here, a stir-up drives traffic.
@Scollurio I don't get why people send death threats to an actress and wish death to her kids and parents because of the actions her fictional character she voiced done who was written by someone else but hey the internet generation are crazy and need to get out more and stay away from screens.
Yeah i agree people still hating on the game a month later is stupid as well people spending stupid amounts of defending it but some people just clearly don't have a life and take this stuff so personally.
@scollurio If it was in the article I can see cynical reasons behind it but when a staff member is potentially stirring things up in the comments it helps no one
@AdamNovice Nah @LiamCroft shouldn't stop because some of them keep coming at us for liking the story, to them it's like a crime to like it.
@AdamNovice I’m not stirring anything up.
@roe You can't draw a general conclusion about all games based on the success of one (or a few). I do wonder what they teach at some schools.
This is why I laughed at the 'boycott Naughty Dog' nonsense. The game was always going to sell just because of how much people loved the first. Hell I saw all the leaks, didn't stop me from buying. As much as I don't care for certain characters or some decisions Druckmann made to tell the main story, it's still an ND game. It plays like a dream, it looks fantastic (even with the film grain) and the sound is incredible. Can't say, based on the main story, that I'd buy a TLoU 3 as I really did not like how some things play out but if ND's next game is a new IP I'm there day one for sure. Just what they pulled off on a technical level with this I say it's a must-play (rent if you don't want to buy) and I can only imagine what this team will do with the PS5 hardware.
@wiiware
I actually agree. First time I can ever remember having to put certain things aside to enjoy a game. And maybe that's what Druckmann was going for. I do still love Ellie, though.
@LiamCroft You literally refrered to TLOU2 detractors as "haters" of course that's stirring things.
@TheArt But it's ok for those that don't like it to be called haters?
@AdamNovice Well if you DON'T LIKE something, you hate it so you're hater or you'd rather they're called Dislikers or something...They're being weird about this whole story issue, if you don't like it just move on but it's like the story which they have no ownership of, should have been written in a way they wanted it to pan out. As though, the characters in the game are IRL and their fates actually happened so much so that some are even threatening the voice actors. You can't tell me it all doesn't seem ridiculous and annoying!
@BruceStraley @BruceStraley @BruceStraley the game WAS the continuation of Ellie & Joel's journey, it just didn't take the path that a minority bunch of entitled gamers wanted it to take.
@TheArt You realize that this whole "us vs them" mentality is what brought our world into the state it is in the first place right?
@WallyWest I agree fully with you but I also feel like the timing to release those dastardly posts to the public was chosen well just to ride the "toxic fans hate us"-train even further when in reality the whole society is filled with "weirdos" and every person that's somewhat in the public eye faces them in one way or another. I can only imagine all the hate mail ANY random big Youtuber regardless of his content must get.
@East76landS I guess you don't see the irony in calling people disagreeing with you "a bunch of entitled gamers" do you? I didn't like the game and where the story went, how does this make me entitled? Are you entitled as well when you go to your favorite restaurant, order a burger just the way you always had them and they changed the recipy and you don't want to go eat there anymore?
Either people are throwing around big words with no clue what they actually mean or people are just happy hating on each other for stupid reasons.
I'm perfectly fine with people enjoying the game it's just a disappointment to me and I voiced my opinion. Last time I checked this wasn't a crime yet.
You said "People pre-ordered the game in good faith and expected the continuation of Joel's and Ellie's Story" as though the game somehow wasn't the continuation, I simply pointed out that it was.
Do we know whether this had an impact on hardware sales yet?
What a game. Played through twice to the plat and wow. This game is something special.
I've been playing lou remastered since i finished the sequel (well, until ghost came out at least) and whilst i can understand the argument from those who preferred the direction of the first game, the second is undeniably a much better game. Playing the first again after 7 years reminded me how clunky the gameplay is. Its the story (and possibly the locales) that hold the first game together, but many of the gameplay sections struggle a bit.
Last of us 2 is possibly the most competently constructed, technical accomplishments i have ever been lucky enough to experience. The emergent gameplay and tactical opportunities to approach each combat situation is unrivalled. Its absolutely beautiful and the small details are breathtaking. What a game.
Maybe the story isnt for everyone (i personally thought it was brilliant), but i think the game fully deserves all of its success.
I definitely think Naughty Dog should do something new next. If they do return to TLOU in the future, it might be sensible to follow a new cast of characters. I think for many there may be too much water under the bridge with Abby, and i am not sure what reason - that doesn't feel overly contrived - could be used to justify Ellie saddling up once more
@TheArt Some of it has been but just as equally is those constantly defending it making it seem like those that don't like it are haters with no argument. The way Neil Druckmann and Troy Baker have behaved hasn't helped either.
@SincereMan @AdamNovice I personally wouldn't call them haters but it's just interesting how they're getting worked up over a story. GTAV's story like most GTAs I don't really care about mostly but I've played it for 6 years, Bloodborne is practically storyless but it's all about the gameplay. @Scollurio well there's always going to be competition in the world of some sort - sports, academics, economies, businesses etc.
@TheArt What you say is all true but you have to understand that most people loved TLOU I for the story and how the characters were written. It's a bit like complaining about people that moan about the story when they bought a book. That's what they came for.
But yes, nowadays it seems like everyone is a vile creature if they don't agree with one's own opinion. This is not limited to gaming and certainly not only to TLOU.
I'd like to point out for UK gamers we already see launch titles with £50+ price tags. Already almost $70, I don't want a further price hike. Push it too high and I'll wait on the sales
@SincereMan Pretty much sums up my feelings. Thank you.
And in July TLOU2 will be the most sold used game then in August noone will even remember what it is.
@Crowley22g where do you get your games since I've seen no games in the UK over 50 quid 🤔 I've always paid 49.99 or below even for the annual releases from acti and ea. I stopped buying from game since there many stores here which are far less cheaper, even more cheaper online.
@Kiro_Senpai Usually Amazon for physical editions. £49.99 on most pre order titles. Digital editions are usually greater than £50 (when they shouldn't be) recent one Ghost of Tsumima £54.99 for the basic version. Game always was overpriced with the occasional bargain. Not very often I pre-order these days.
@Crowley22g Shopto for physical editions are usually cheaper than amazon I tend to pick up some of the bigger releases while I'm doing my shopping since at places like sainsburys or Tesco's they are usually 45 quid.
