We don’t know the exact details but Sony’s clearly invested heavily into Marvel’s Avengers to ensure Spider-Man is an exclusive character, so it’s not exactly going to shy away from the news. A new sticker spotted on the box art confirms the character’s inclusion next year, and it’s going to fan flames among disgruntled communities who still haven’t got over the fact that the web-slinger will be restricted to the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
You may recall a recent trailer for the Crystal Dynamics superhero brawler irking fans as it flaunted the so-called PlayStation Advantages planned for the upcoming release, and this updated cover will surely bring back bad memories for those already feeling mad. Nevertheless, it’d be naïve to expect the Japanese giant to gloss over this, as it’s clearly cost the company a fortune to secure.

“Science fiction violence” is a new one on me. Was fantasy violence not sufficient? Or does this relate to Hulk ripping robots apart?
It almost seems like at this point they're just leaning into the hate and doing it on purpose lol!
Thing is after playing some of the beta this games spiderman ain't going to be anywhere near as good as Insomniacs. At least they made it clear on the box for a change inside of letting people find out later. Now wheres the sticker for the virgin media skins that people will crave
No one should feel bad about missing out on anything in this game. The beta was not good.
@nessisonett It always amazes me when I see a new content rating, I feel like they get pretty out of hand. I dont know how old fear and intimidation are, but I thought all of those were covered under the violence umbrella.
This game is legitimately awful. It needs a delay, but Square-Enix are not going to do that obviously, they know the value of the IP they have.
What a cynical piece of garbage.
@Constable_What I couldn't agree more. This game is so awful it makes Anthem look like a high quality game by comparison.
@RBMango Yeah, it's definitely right around that quality. Anthem was reaalllyy bad at launch and in its beta though. I don't think it's worse, but probably on par. I definitely think you could make a case for it being worse though.
I don't want our amazing Spider-Man game associated with this garbage, they were rumored to be in the same universe (although Marvel says they aren't) which would be devastating. Clearly one studio is far more talented than the other.
Lol. The rage for this will be hilarious. I played the beta, I definitely was not impressed. The combat and framerate felt so weird.
@Constable_What Anthem was indeed crap, but at least I could get through five minutes of that without getting a massive headache. I can't say the same for Avengers. Even if it is in beta, there is no way a few more weeks of polish is going to fix a game this fundamentally screwed.
@PhantomMenace84 If that was the case, Spider-Man wouldn’t be in Ultimate Alliance 3. Marvel Games own the rights, they lease them out to companies they choose. Therefore, all the mobile games with Spider-Man, the PS4 game and this all deal with them in some way. You’ll probably find it’s more that Sony have leverage due to their many dealings with Sony in the past. Marvel said to Sony who said to Insomniac, we have loads of characters so pick one you want to make a game of. Insomniac chose Spider-Man and the rest is history.
Either way, I see no reason to play it. It is as uninspiring as MUA3. Glad I did not pre-order it.
Not awful, just Needs another 6 months in the oven.
“Cost a fortune to secure”
Money wasted.
If Sony spent a single penny on this game to get this an exclusive and it wasn’t part of an existing deal (which I’m fairly certain it was) it’s money badly spent. This game isn’t a gonna be a classic.
If as I suspect it’s a by product of the existing Spiderman licensing- then its a lovely bonus for Sony. Game will do well with casuals short term and if like many savvy gamers that own multiple consoles this will be enough to swing it (pun intended) to get it on PS4.
If I pick this up at some point ps4 version right now looks like a no brainer.
After Xbox fans get the open beta I don't think they'll care anymore, its just a mediocre mishmash of much better games with the worst loot system I've seen and all crowbarred into a genre this licence was never going to work in
When Anthem has made a better Iron Man game without the licence then you know something is wrong
I think because of the Marvel movie franchise since Disney took over, combined with recent Batman Arkham and Spider-Man game, people are becoming spoiled and forgetting that 90% of super hero games have always been low quality money cash grabs. This Crystal Dynamics Marvel Avengers game is no different - made purely to ride on the hype train of the successful Marvel movie franchise, striking while the iron is hot. It clearly lacks any sort of depth, made only to appeal to general mass audience of all ages.
@Deadhunter Good cause I was planning on buying this JUST for Spiderman cause I wasn't interested in any other superhero.
@Bigdog1318
My thoughts too. Sony own the rights to spiderman. They can do what they want. You might not like it but that is business.
@Stocksy
Sony own the Spiderman right, so they're technically getting payed royalties. Personally I think this train wreck doesn't look good givej Sony and insomniacs perfect spiderman games, but they're earing that dollar 🤷🏻♂️.
Rough comment section lol
The broken Beta matchmaking is my only concern so far. Idk why so many people are ***** down this game's throat.
@Bigdog1318 click bait stuff like this brings out people's agressive side you only have to look at the tone of the some the comments and that equals traffic, otherwise they'd just see the headline and skip past the whole article as what else is there to say that couldn't be said in the headline as others metioned 'Spider-man sticker appears on PS4 boxart' job done no one reads the article.
I read a few people saying this is as bad as Anthem. I played that beta too but not the main game, my feeling is that gameplay wise - yes this is just as bad. But a lot more thought has gone into the story and that feels a lot more interesting.
Based on the beta alone anthem was 6/10 for me, this is 7/10
I need to play the beta, I wish it's full single player game like spider-man though.
I wish Crystal Dynamics would've stuck to Tomb Raider. I'd take Lara over all of these hero twerps any day.
Okay, let's clear some crap up:
1- Sony does NOT own the Rights to Spider-Man! They only lease the Movie Rights.
Marvel Comics owns everything related to Spider-Man. Movies, Comics, Games, Toys, Clothes and TV and everything else I missed.
2- Sony has First Options on using Spider-Man for games. They have to pay out the arse to Marvel to do so, but not as much as they used to have to.
3- if Sony doesn't make a Spider-Man movie within FIVE years of each other, not just production/filming, but actual release, they LOSE the Movie Rights. Same as with Fox and X-Men/DareDevil/Fantastic Four.
I was warm about this game, but it looks my almost zero interest is at place. I loved Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 and 2, liked Xmen origins Wolverine even for its brutal technical issues and than was confused by ps3 Spider-Man because it was just repainted inFamous. I have some another ps3 Xmen game ("New hero"???) but that is total crap. Since that I have low interest in any marvel game. Because of I more and more don't like Spider-Man (latest movies are tragic) this "Spider-Man will be in our Avengers game" feels more damaging than hyping me.
Didn't played beta of Avengers, and at this constalation, I will get it when it comes to PS plus free monthly game...
The 'wound'?
I'm starting to believe this is an xbox site? 🤔
@SuperiorSpidey It always is nowadays.
😒
Maybe one day something will come out that will unite us all (a particular game, a new Plus/Now, the PS5 itself) but I'm not going to be holding my breath!
Also I read Spencer said he doesnt care about selling more consoles than the competition and it seems xbox fans are happy about it?
Dont be surprised if we see a lot of exclusivity like this going forward. 🤷♂️
Just my thoughts.
@redd214 The hate? Seriously dude what the hell are you talking about? They spent a lot of money on something to bring added value platstation consumers. Why should they not make that clear on the box? It is no way hate.
Lol hilarious. What did you think they wasnt going to advertise it. Push square is a bit of a joke lately. Playstations only responsibility is to Playstation owners and if it hurts mocrosoft then it's a bonus. They are two companies in direct competition. Stop crying.
No Hawkeye, not even a sticker, they should call this The Misavengers!
I'm gonna say it, this game doesn't look good. I'd rather play that Marvel Ultimate Alliance game on Switch, and even that is feels like it was on a budget tighter than the arguments on Nintendo Life.
I don't know why people care so much, the game is awful.
Oh that’s it, this is enough to make me go out and buy a PS4 to play as Spider-Man....Pur-lease 🙄
This makes sense for current PS4 owners but Sony doubling down on this game with exclusivity isn’t going to make people go out and buy a PS4 or go for that version if they prefer to game on either Xbox or PC. I personally think Sony is taking a big risk investing so much into this game when a lot of people clearly don’t have much confidence in the quality of it.
@JJ2 Thing is MS seem to be way more consumer friendly lately with Sony being anti-consumer by pulling stunts like this. Phil Spencer doesn’t care about console sales because MS don’t rely on console sales unlike Sony. Subscriptions from Game Pass and making xCloud as successful as possible is what they care about, also they have the biggest player base out there with Xbox and PC combined, as well as reaching a new audience of android users due to xCloud which I can see being a big chance to break Japan as we know they love their portability so I don’t see why you think PS will have more exclusivity because Series X will be selling less than PS5.
@redd214
I was thinking similarly. Once MS stated publiy that they won't be going for exclusives Sony has been doubling Down on that message and rightfully so.
MS always seems to be handing Sony a stick to beat the with. It's almost starting to look like tradition.
On the other hand this sort of thing like the sticker on the box letting everyone know that there is exclusive content included is also nothing new.
Making this article click bait imo.
I am really getting tired of people whining about this issue specifically here but in general as well. And frankly I don't get it. This argument that it's anti-consumer or that everyone should just have the right to content across competing platforms is preposterous. What Sony has done is the epitome of pro consumer. That is adding content for those who have already bought (consumed) the playstation brand. I should also note thst xbox and P.C. players are getting the complete game. They are not missing any part of it. The Spiderman content is bonus content. And as I said this idea that everyone is entitled to all content even on competing platforms is patently ridiculous. That's like saying because there is Bose sound system in a Lexus then it should have to be in a Corolla or Kia. If you want to be upset xbox players be mad at Microsoft for being so cheap when they have the money. They could have easily done the same thing, but chose not to. And btw this is how business is done throughout every single industry in the world and it is not going away. So get used to it. The other thing that is annoying to me also are these alleged playstation owners who whine along with everyone else. Saying I am a playstation owner and this really upsets me. Seriously get real please.
Played the beta yesterday and gave up by mission 3. So so boring and everything feels ridiculously laggy. Granted, it looks pretty enough but the gameplay is uninspired, the combat lacking and everything just feels like a mishmash of stuff from far superior games. Really glad I didn't preorder it and currently looks like I'll skip it which, for a lifelong Marvel fan, is a crushing disappointment. Maybe time will let the game evolve into something better but right now even Spiderman can't tempt me back to this crushing borefest
Is this still a thing? Or has everyone realised after the beta that the game is going to be a Micro-transaction filled piece of trash with a laborious matchmaking system right out of 2005? At this point it could come with free cookies for life and I'd avoid it like the plague... mainly because the chocolate chips would be Micro-transactions.
@Deadhunter Agreed. I could only manage around an hour before I lost interest and uninstalled it. I can't help but think that the influence of the MCU Avengers and superheros as characters - relationship, story arc, greatly overshadows the two dimensional game characters controlled by button mashing & QT events.
It would have been okay to say "no need to develop characters players can relate to, that's all been done in the films' if the characters looked and sounded like the MCU characters, but they don't. Thor gives a close enough approximation of the Thor from the first film and I suspect Hulk is chosen as the first guy we get to control because you can't go far wrong in what he looks like (unless you go back to Lou Ferrigno)
@SAMTYLER1974 my thoughts exactly. Such a disappointment. It might do well with pre-teens.
@RBMango "This game is so awful it makes Anthem look like a high quality game by comparison."
Steady on.
@Medic_Alert
There was no passion in my comment. Just an observation that you apparently agree with?
I'm not sure what you are trying to tell me.
@Alexface. Since when a 6 out of 10 or a 7 out of 10 is bad.you make no sense at all.a 7 is good.a 6 is not bad.a 5 is alright.a 4 is terrible.gets your fact right.anthem is a 4 awful at best.wird up son
@nathanSF Like I said previously, as boring and unpolished as Anthem was, I would much rather play that than Avengers. Anthem had better gameplay, looked better, didn't have horrible screen-shaking, the framerate didn't zig-zag all over the place during the action, and didn't make me feel physically uncomfortable after playing it more any decent stretch of time. And as cynical as Anthem was, it didn't have battle passes for all of its characters like Avengers does.
Played the beta last week or the week before, whenever the last one was, and I was very unimpressed. It feels like the game exists for the sake of existing. Everything about it felt very mediocre. I cancelled my pre-order half way through the second mission.
@MaccaMUFC It's all PR.
Neither of them is more or less pro or anti consumer than the other. MS did a good job spinning that they were the heroic underdog this gen while Sony were the tyrant, but they'd have nabbed this deal too if they could have. Don't doubt it.
MS love their timed exclusivity just as much as the next mega corporation, don't doubt that either. The timed consoles launch exclusives at their gameplay reveal the other day were proof enough of that.
Phil Spencer says all of the nice things we want people in his position to say, but it's all spin. At the end of the day his main concern is shareholders and profit margins. It's the same with him as it is for all of the rest.
I was saying on Pure Xbox the other day:
You could argue that Game Pass is anti-consumer if you wanted. Pay forever and own nothing. Doesn't sound like a great deal when you spin it that way.
You could argue that PlayStation are anti-consumer for blocking Spider-Man in Avengers on other platforms.
You could argue XBOX are anti-consumer for buying Obsidian and denying Pillars of Eternity fans on PlayStation access to future games in that series.
These companies don't know us or our names. Everything they say or do in public is PR, a message to justify the decisions they've made.
Eg: MS say you won't need a new XBOX for a year or two years because everything during that period will be playable on the current XBOX.
Then they showed a lot of nice first-party games during their gameplay reel a few weeks ago, with the implication being that you can play them on both.
How many of those games are more than two years away?
Sony showed a lot of games that I can't wait to get my hands on during their gameplay reveal, but so far they've only given a launch window for one of them.
It's all marketing.
They're the same.
Neither one is more consumer friendly than the other.
I'm either a cynic or a realist. And yes, I love the approaches Nintendo and PlayStation take to game design, but don't get me wrong, I'm not a fanboy. I hate that attitude.
I do like to call PR for what it is when I see it though, no matter who is spinning it: BS.
@MaccaMUFC
Sony isnt 'anti consumer's haha
People have a funny idea of what 'anti consumer's means.
@JJ2 Agreed. anti-consumer is a term that people are throwing around a lot lately when they see something they don't like.
@Shepherd_Tallon
They are being manipulated paroting PR marketing and usual press stirring the pot. That is my opinion.
@JJ2 Plus, opinions online ebb and flow. In a few years it will be popular to turn on MS again and Sony will be the hero. Then it will change again. And again...
After playing it, Hulk seems better suited for a leveling up xp system vs the loot system.
@Exlee300p relax sport, I think you're confused about what I meant
A better version of the sticker - Crap Game Has Slightly More Things On PS4. Still Crap Though.
Sad. Going to play fall guys on my Xbox now
@Medic_Alert
Ha I'm sorry if I confuse people with a question mark. Maybe not the best way to Express myself. I often add a question mark at the end of a sentence to Express uncertainty.
Played the first couple of missions in the beta. Was ok, nothing special. Got to the third and it's true colours are shown. Typical game like the other loot and shoot but with MCU, this will sell to the uninformed, due to being plastered with the Avengers on the case, but it will falter out and fail.
I thought the combat in the game was pretty fun, but just something about the game feels off. The designs for some of the characters, Captain America especially, just do not look right to me. The loot system as well is pretty weird, since you can't even see it on your character. Also, the blatant copying of Destiny by even calling your gear exotic made me laugh. Not sure about this one, and having a Spider-Man that will probably be way less fun than Insomniac's doesn't tip the scale either way.
@playstation1995
Haha, to be fair I agree. My problem is there are so many 8-9/10 games that there's just not time for "good" games.
For me unfortunately a 6/10 isn't worth the time 😞
The details aren't too difficult to understand. Sony owns the media rights to Spiderman..
Square ain't going to say no to using one of the most popular comic book characters ever..
@Alexface. I play a lot of 6 games and some are better than 8.even a 5.word up son
@PhantomMenace84 1.They did not buy the gaming rights back for Spider-Man. They bought Insomniac, who held the license to develop games centered around the character since 2014.
2. Sony does not own everything surrounding the character. Disney still controls the comics, the TV rights, and merchandising like toys and accessories. Sony doesn't even have full control over the film rights now that they're sharing them with Disney, which is what allowed Spider-Man to be introduced into the MCU in the first place. Sony had complete control over the film rights until 2015 when they started sharing them with Disney.
@MaccaMUFC xbox is just meh, and sales reflect that. Its only going to get worse
@bbauer36 Xbox isn’t just a console anymore, it’s so much more than that. Microsoft won’t care how many Series X/S is sold, consoles are sold at a loss anyway at least at first and MS have enough money to buy Sony several times over so don’t worry about their console sales. The Series X/S is merely just an option now since it’s moving the Xbox brand on with Game Pass for PC and xCloud. Sony on the other hand will be stuck in the past relying on console sales while completing with just Nintendo. Xbox are leaving them behind by no longer restricting games on just a console or dedicated handheld device, it’ll now be possible to play Xbox games on several devices anywhere at anytime. They’ll be plenty of console owners here who prefer to game at home on their couch on a big tv but believe it or not so much more people game on mobiles/tablets than consoles.
Sony rely heavily on solid single player games to sell their consoles as well as having the brand recognition but it’s multiplayer games that are much more popular these days and with Microsoft’s xCloud and most people around the world owning a mobile/tablet, they know what they are doing.
I initially thought this game looked awful but I liked the beta so I'll pick it up one day
I really enjoyed the Beta. No framerate drops when on screen were many explosions and combat. For me worked very smoothly, the controls are great (I've been worried about it before Beta), graphics as well. Spider-Man is a must in this universe and I am happy to be part of PlayStation's community where always we get special treatment.
having played the beta over the weekend no amount of Spiderman would make me pick it up, I knew it would be a Destiny-like but I expected better than a button masher against waves of enemies
@playstation1995 do you mean review scores then?
I mean my personal "scores". If I rate something a 6 then that can't be better than a game I rate an 8!
Never forget microsoft started this long ago with those xbox 360 timed exclusives and killer instinct
That’s why we will and always buy the PlayStation......
No playstation?
Cry me river.
@PhantomMenace84 they only own his rights on movie screens and no where else any other time you see him it's marvel comics licensing him out in a per case basis.
What happened with Spiderman PS4 was marvel actually approached insomniac with the idea of them doing a game based around any number of their heros the studio (being owned by Sony and Sony having a har* on for pushing their connection to him) they chose to do Spiderman.
It was a license for that game series and I'm sure multiple sequels are a given but there's been plenty of Spiderman in other pieces of material and even other games even during this generation.
. Activision did lose their license years ago so that makes sense for them to have nothing to do with it now.
Sony may in fact be actively paying as much as they can to keep Spiderman out of others hands to drive home thier connection (and help keep him in the mcu or give them more leverage etc.
But the rights are still owned by marvel but they are plenty happy to take all Sonys money at least for the time.
@Hityoazz83 maybe but they grew up and I thought most of the industry had to. The world of gaming today is about connecting with each other and sharing our experiences across multiple platforms.
Only Sony still seems interested in keeping people as separated as they can (due to a fear of people slipping through their fingers I guess?)
Ive always been a Sony owner going back to ps1 in 1997 but today I'm much less interested in "investing" in their world as they remind too much of apple and their crazy walled garden approach to users and That s**t don't fly with me. Just like epic is taking apple to task people need to do the same with Sony.
I'll still buy in and play the games I'm FORCED to play on their inferior hardware but it will never be my go to and anytime I can skip them I will.
They were my go to for a long time but their crappy practices have shown Me how much (or how little) I am actually worth to them.
Respect me my time and my money and I'll give it all to you try and rule any of it with an iron grip and you'll see me push you away.
@MaccaMUFC funny party too about the Sony 1st party exclusives needed for "system sellers" in fact only about 14.8%of ps4 console owners have actually bought (or gotten for free included with a bundle of their system itself.
120+ million consoles and only less than 15% even care about these so called system sellers.
What this tell me is in this next gen what's really going to be the driving factor is 1. Cost and 2. Performance 2a. Specifically the performance across the games people ACTUALLY buy consoles to play.
The fortnite
The cod
The fifa
The NBA/madden/etc
The other big cross platform massive games most people spend their time with these days.
Those are the games people will be looking to play (not the 16 million who buy Sony exclusives but the other 150 million players just wanting to play their favorite franchise at its best.
There's a reason Sony and Xbox we t from practically 50/50 at the end of last gen to a almost 3:1 lead.
It started with the price (Sony was $100 less) and then it was all about the performance leads Sony shied in EVERY SINGLE GAME across both platforms.
Every other video or story was -
Sony is 1080p while xbox struggle with 900p in...
Or
Sony crushes Xbox in latest (insert whatever game here) performance
For a year that was basically the only story in town.
Microsoft cost more and ran everything WORSE!
IT MATTERED
and the smaller lead Sony started with cost grew more and more with each and every new game that ran better on ps4.
Until we got to the mid cycle upgrades (which Sony go out first by a year) and by which there was little to no reason except for die xbox fans to switch at this point.
That mid cycle was never going to change anything just make sure we all got by a little longer.
But now here we are possibly looking at another xbox 360 / ps3 days.
Rumors say xbox will come in cheaper and it's already known they got the power lead.
So let's see how things go after a year or 2 of Sony always getting put in 2nd place with every game release except the ones that are exclusive to their platform.
We might have found the reason why they are still so determined to keep as many things exclusive to their platform as possible (the only things that will be "best" on ps5 will be the things exclusive to ps5! Lol
@Shepherd_Tallon like pc gaming fanboys today thing amd ryzen is a GOD send for their pc gaming even though it's still inferior for you know actual pc gaming.
So many have invested into the hype though that they've now convinced themselves that the amd ryzen chips high ability in non gaming areas is significantly more important that it would ever actually be for them.
Their effectively throwing away money and or performance just so they can claim they were right.
If you ACTUALLY looked at their usage over the course of ownership I guarantee 90% of them would find the majority of their use being gaming focused with very little to no measurable advantage to having it the other way.
Itll take a while but once amd keeps somehow coming up short the fanboys will slowly start to open their eyes and just accept what's already known.
Intel is faster in gaming.
It will also take the "influencers" and click bait article writers to grow a conscious and stop just feeding the troops exactly what they want to hear whole ignoring actual facts that would possibly make the mob seem less interested in making it rain views and support on you.
To me I only want the thoughts and opinions from the the type that are going to throw all market bias out the window and only report facts not feelings.
Personally the only one in the pc gaming review space who seems to still act like this is Steve from gamers nexus.
I begun to only trust his hencuw as at least I know they were done properly and without trying to hide things via bias.
@Netret0120 if only you knew what you were talking about how much better off we all would be.
@Cybrshrk I'm not sure I agree with all of your points there.
By your maths, between 15 and 20 million people will buy first party titles on PlayStation.
That's a pretty significant number and not one I would be quick to dismiss or to laugh at.
A lot of these people will be early adopters.
Early adopters are far from everything, but they do set the trend, and most early adopters of PS5 will be going with that platform because a) first party titles, or, b) that's where their library and accounts already are. 100+ million people already have a library on PlayStation. That's such an important factor.
After that it's largely about momentum and, as you said, price. Price is always important, of course.
You mentioned: "What this tell me is in this next gen what's really going to be the driving factor is 1. Cost and 2. Performance 2a. Specifically the performance across the games people ACTUALLY buy consoles to play.
The fortnite
The cod
The fifa
The NBA/madden/etc
The other big cross platform massive games most people spend their time with these days."
I think the performance of these games will be no more or less important than it is now, and right now it doesn't seem to matter too much to the majority. What's more important here is where do people already have accounts for those games? They can transfer items across accounts in some cases, sure, but most will still want their trophies and stats.
PlayStation is a household name. PS5 banners at Champions League matches are reaching so many people, and those exclusive deals in games like Avengers are ridiculously effective at drawing the demographic who have time to dedicate hours and hours to those games (kids, teenagers, young adults.)
The gaming demographic in general is older than it used to be. Speaking on behalf of myself, I have work and I have a house to save for. I don't have time for Fortnite. I want single player games that don't force me online for timed events, plus the occasional online trip with my mates.
Right now, today, the best place for me to get that mix is on PlayStation and Nintendo.
So that's where I'll stay until someone shows me something better.
