IO Interactive has today announced that Hitman 3 will be released on both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on 20th January 2021, and you will receive a free PS5 upgrade if you purchase the digital PS4 version. You won't need to spend any extra cash on a special edition or cross-gen version -- the upgrade is included in every copy of the digital version.
A Deluxe Edition will be available for purchase though, which includes Deluxe Escalations, extra in-game items and suits, and a digital soundtrack. But anyone who pre-orders Hitman 3 will get their hands on the Trinity Pack. Nine items are included, each themed around a different entry in the rebooted series.
IO Interactive signs off on its blog post by clarifying that the free PS5 upgrade is for digital users: "On PlayStation, when you buy a digital PS4 version of Hitman 3 from the PlayStation Store, you can download the PS5 version at no extra cost when it launches." It doesn't look like the physical version of the game will include a free upgrade, unless the developer has more details to share down the line. Don't forget that Hitman 3 also bundles in complete PlayStation VR support for the entire rebooted series.

Finally! A PS5 game I want with an honest-to-God release date! It must be my birthday! 😂
Really can’t wait for this, should be great fun. I like the fact that they improve the old levels as well, it makes each game an increasing bargain.
Not a HitMan fan, but this one has me interested. So much for the "PS5 games are $70" assumption
Hitman 2 is the best HM game ever when you take into account it also has all the Hitman levels as well so by default Hitman 3 is the best HM game ever because it will have all the content from HM and HM2.
I absolutely can't wait for this.
@Agramonte No, this was always going to depend on the developer/publisher. Remember that IO Interactive is self-publishing this game.
If $70 does become the new standard, though, expect more and more companies to adopt it.
@Kefka2589 Buy PS4 disc, remove code, sell PS4 disc day after, get PS5 version for the cost of the difference...
Unless they went down the CoD:Ghosts route where the last-gen disc had to be in the tray to verify the license for the digital version then it's simple to see why they wouldn't do it.
Enjoy the last game of this series.
@Kefka2589 Yeah assumed it would be something like that.
Even that way they can't control the pricing to the same extent as a digital game, and less of that money goes into the devs pockets once all overheads are paid/retailers/logistics etc etc...
They're essentially already quids-in when someone buys digital (despite Sony's cut) and so I guess it's almost rewarding the fact you're paying a premium price off the bat for the digital version.
I don't know the ins and outs of it all but guessing someone out there has broken down where the cash goes for each format...I'd put (a very small amount of) money down on the fact that one full price digital version nets them a not too dissimilar amount than a couple of physical copies sold through retailers.
I'm excited for this game. Hopefully they also release a physical edition with the deluxe features and some upgrade path to the PS5.
You mean they aren’t going to say it’s 50 for PS4 plus 20 for ps5 minus 10 for season pass plus twenty for 120fps Minus 20 if on disc plus 5 if bought before November But ps5 version doesn’t work on PS4 unless it’s full moon....
Activision leading the way and these guys are chumps for giving it away. It’s like they want to sell their game and do right by the fans. Shame on them.
Milk milk milk us. We are gaming cows and we loved to be milked
Is Hitman 3 actually getting a physical release? Since IO are self publishing maybe they can't afford to do one
@WallyWest Hitman 2 only has Hitman 1 levels if you already own some form of Hitman 1 in the first place! Still good though, because you get to incorporate them into one package with the improved engine and gameplay additions. I imagine 3 will let you do the same if you already own 1 and/or 2. IO are one of the good guys.
@Porkfiend That is true but those levels were free for anyone what owned the first game, they have confirmed i think the same here and have even said all the progress you made in them carries over so you won't need to unlock everything from scratch again.
Free "digital" PS5 upgrade? Welp guess I'll just wait then cause I ain't buying it digitally.
@WallyWest that sounds great! I didn't think they were my type of game but once I got into them they're one of my favourite series from this gen
If Square/Enix and Ubisoft can offer free upgrades then there is precisely ZERO reason why Activision/EA etc can’t absorb the extra costs. They will still be gouging their customers with invasive micro transactions either way so that revenue stream is safe. This price rise stuff is utter BS.
@lessthanleo i never knew that about COD:Ghosts. That’s outrageous.
