If you and a group of mates pick up FIFA every year, you're going to have to make sure you all upgrade to the PlayStation 5 together if you want to continue playing against one another in FIFA 21. That's because the latest iteration will not support cross-play of any kind, meaning those who stick with the PlayStation 4 past the beginning of the next generation will not be able to play with friends on PS5.
The news comes from the @EAFIFADIRECT Twitter account and has been reported on by Video Games Chronicle, where it stated: "You won't be able to play across console generations or cross-play in #FIFA21." EA Sports has confirmed that FIFA 21 will come with a free upgrade from the PS4 to the PS5 version and all your FIFA Ultimate Team progress will carry over, but the buck stops at actually being able to play against PS4 users.
Is this setback going to create problems for your friendship group? Let us know in the comments below.

Good, lower class scum are not welcome when I'm gaming.
But for real, hopefully this is to do with the gameplay being different. I think this should be a good thing.
What if you run the PS4 version of FIFA on the PS5 via back compat when you wanna play with PS4 pals? Considering it's a free upgrade, you should own both.
Yeah if there are gameplay changes then it makes sense.
@roe yeah similar to fifa 14 on PS4, that game was awesome.
I really really wish they'd implement cross play, find it stupid not being able to play my friends on Xbox even though it's the same game.
Still odd considering that EA has been going big on crossplay recently; all of their EA access things have been all about crossplay. Seems a tad bizarre
@DrClayman I wonder how the bc will work on games that get a free upgrade. Will it be automatic or will you get an option to play the PS4 version. Very interesting
Want to test your friendships?
Play Pro Clubs lol
@roe "Good, lower class scum are not welcome when I'm gaming."
HAHAHAH XD
@DrClayman This is something I've been pondering lately as well. Is there an option to play the PS4 version of a game if you've "upgraded". Hopefully we get more concrete answers about how all of this will work form either Sony or MS soon.
Good old EA but as @get2sammyb if there are genuine gameplay changes for next gen then it does make sense
This is interesting, I think the ps5 fifa is using new improved engine while the ps4 fifa is the "legacy" game.
@redd214 is there a reason u would want to play ps4 version instead of upgraded one? Thats a serious question, im not trying to be a prick.
@ellsworth004 well in this case the reason would be to play online with friends who may not have PS5
@ellsworth004 @roe exactly what I was going to say
People really should give PES a chance. The game has so many animations, from the way you can score a goal to the way a keeper can save a shot. It really is quite unique and makes every match play out differently.
@Kalvort I'm with you on that, just recently had an old friend round and played PES lite and it was so much more enjoyable and unpredictable than fifa...
I wonder how many definition would better fit to the acronym EA. Evil Awakened seems accurate. Earth's Antagonist? In french, the E would definitely stand for "Enculés"
@redd214 that makes since. Ive been wondering if the upgraded ps4 versions of game will be exactly the same as the ps5 version
@DrClayman Yeah, I think that's why they're doing this. People are gonna buy FIFA in September then two months later when the PS5 comes out they're going to have to buy it again. Classic EA.
EA should just make their own console so the rest of us don’t have to bother with their games.
