The Last of Us: Part II has been both a critical and commercial success, breaking launch weekend records and absolutely smashing the UK physical charts. It should come as no surprise to learn that it's seen similar momentum digitally. While we don't have any figures, Sony has revealed that Naughty Dog's game was last month's most downloaded PlayStation 4 title in both Europe and North America.
Aside from that, the two regions have fairly different top 20s. The games featured are similar but appear in different orders. It's safe to say that evergreen titles like FIFA 20, Grand Theft Auto V, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare had a good month. Meanwhile, SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated charted 14th in the US, but didn't make it into Europe's bestseller list.
Elsewhere, GORN secured North America's top spot in the PlayStation VR chart, while Europe is still absolutely loving Beat Saber. Call of Duty: Warzone remains top of the free-to-play chart, while Fortnite dominates in the DLC bestsellers.
You can check out all the charts for yourself through the link. Which games did you buy from PlayStation Store in June? Let us know in the comments section below.

So despite all the hatred this game has garnered online from bigots and lunatics sending death threats, the game itself has bypassed all that to sell really, really well. Who'd of thought?
Game of the generation imo
Does anyone have anything positive to say to convince me to buy this? No joke
@DualshockInfinit This game deserves all the critical acclaim it's received mate, don't fall for all the negativity.
@DualshockInfinit do you like the first one? Why not give it a try and make up your own mind? There's a lot of negativity that you could end up disagreeing with if you played it.
If you don't like it, at least you'll have given it a shot
@DualshockInfinit
The gameplay is as good as its ever been in a Naughty Dog game. Perfect blend of action and the slower moments. The stealth is really satisfying as is the melee. The world building is excellent and while I don't care for the main story itself, it is easy to get caught up in the lore while exploring the environments. It's not my favorite Naughty Dog game nor would I agree it's game of the generation but if you liked the first one, give this a go.
Much better overall game than the first one, in my opinion.
@80sGamer Thanks for the feedback will definitely pick this one up and ignore criticism like I did for death stranding
@DualshockInfinit was death stranding good? I keep meaning to buy it but then something else comes out and gets in the way
@SuperNintendoMii If you like the weird side of the Metal Gear games on top of some unique gameplay it's great
Fantastic game, so I’m not surprised about the sales. I’ve said it before & I’ll say it again, Last Of Us part 2 is the game of the generation & the best game Sony has made, IMO.
@Gamer83 Thank you for the insight I'll pick it up ASAP
@DualshockInfinit
No prob, hope you enjoy it.
Good to see some extra sales for Days Gone, it deserves some love!
Sad though that Death Stranding didn't make either list. I'm over 100hrs in and suspect it will be my most played title this year. It's quite relaxing just making deliveries and rebuilding roads and then you do a main story delivery and the tension is cranked up.
As for Part II, well I've said a lot about it and even though I finished it last Friday it's still preying on my mind. Great game but the discourse around it is exhausting!
@DualshockInfinit Yeah, was going to tell you the same comparison with DS
I ignored all the nonsense with Death Stranding also, and glad I did. TLOU2 is another game that you just need to block out the noise.
When I could not see anything in Death Stranding (snow storm, mountain mission) and out of nowhere I saw the flashing light of a charging tower that another player had put up (who took the same wrong turn I had 😂) I knew how amazing DS was going to be.
@SuperNintendoMii Death Stranding is a big open world game about delivering packages. It sounds terrible on paper. But I enjoyed it thoroughly. It's often dismissed as a ''walking simulator'', but ironically it does really simulate walking, since the amount of cargo you're carrying plays a role in how you react to the environment. And you have to balance yourself on rugged terrain. So getting from A to B is always a challenge, and I think that gameplay loop is what kept me going. I usually don't like big open world games, but this is one is an exception.
@SuperNintendoMii Death Stranding is 10/10 imo. My personal game of the generation, I can see why many won't like it, but it's a game that clicked with me.
@DualshockInfinit @oldschool1987 @Octane thanks I'll give it a look once I've done ghost of Tsushima. I did love metal gear but there was a lot of negativity and then other releases got in the way so I just never got round to buying it
@SuperNintendoMii hope you enjoy it if you do buy it! MGSV was my game of the gen, I'm no Kojima fanboy but I must be if I loved those games so much 😂the games are mechanically flawless
Keep hating people seems too push the sales forward. 😆 👌
I just finished TLOU 2. I loved the game. For me it is a solid 8/10. So was the first part(for me). Emotionally, it is a rollecoaster. And I loved it.
The problem I have now is, I don't know what else to play. I have more than 100 games and yet, after finishing this, everything else seems kind of meh. Sure, it is nice to be a hero who saves the day but this game left a lasting impression because in it people are just struggling to live their lives the way they can, with all the ups and downs life brings.
I think this game, in the long run, will be apreciated. Even by many of those who were/are rejecting it because it didn't play out the way they wanted it. But such is life. Unpredictable and fragile. But still worth living and fighting for.
£54.99? For digital? Seriously no thanks. I can already get a physical copy £10 cheaper and I’m just finishing revisiting TLOU remastered.
Death Stranding is a amazing game, love that game with my network of zip lines. Building roads, stealthing into enemy camps to take back materials, and tons of other stuff. Definitely playing it again in he hardest difficultly.
The Last Of Us 2 is a amazing game also, the combat, stealth has been vastly improved over the original, graphics are unbelievable good, story I liked in my opinion it's a story of Revenge & Redemption it obviously has other themes going on too.
@oldschool1987 ah man the last mission to the incinerator left me in bits, DS was my 2nd favourite game from last year.
@banacheck hardest difficulty isn’t too bad as 90% of the time your just delivering, only the boss battles are ramped up a bit. It took me around 110hrs to get my platinum and loved every minute of it. Once you’ve got a zip line network up it becomes really easy.
@SuperNintendoMii July will be interesting. Sales are already dropping off pretty badly, asia hates the game and many shops are sitting on their copies.
I don't wish this to ND and I'm not rubbing my hands when I read that the sales drop. It's just that ND reaps what they saw. They took a risk, now they need own up to it and not go attack their former fanbase for "not getting it" or being "bigots".
@DualshockInfinit Everything else than the writing and the story, which is devisive and not necessarily bad, depending from where you are coming from and what your standards are, it's a great, atmospheric game. Looks great, sounds great, plays great. Just don't get too attached to any of the characters. To me personally it was a huge disappointment because I wished it was a tonal and literal continuation of the first part.
@Scollurio
Most people ripping on it aren't even bigots. Not going to get into what I didn't like because of spoilers but there were some decisions people have a legit reason to be annoyed by. Of course, it's Naughty Dog's story to tell and I still think for people who like the first this is an essential just to see how things unfold in time that follows.
@Gamer83
Exactly. I dislike how if you didn't like the game you are labelled a bigot or incel or any derogatory word.
Pacing was all over the show. Gameplay hasn't changed much in 7 years. My word Dina is awful and the story is divisive AF.
@Scollurio all the sales so far are saying its a success, its the fastest selling PS4 exclusive. Literally we keep hearing how it's selling really well. But yes, July will be interesting. I do think the sales in July will be strong.
Some Asian countries have made it illegal to be gay anyway, and some have gone further and have the death penalty, so that continent would automatically be against it. And in Japan maybe if Ellie was 12 and wore a school uniform they'd have kept it at no1 for weeks. Japan isn't exactly known for its adoration of Western games.
I think valid criticism is fair, but at the moment that is being overshadowed by the homophobic criticism that is being directed at naughty dog. And the death threats at Laura Bailey. I really think it's game of the generation, and certainly it's a polarising game where you either love it or hate it but there doesn't seem to be much in between.
@Fuzzymonkeyfunk glad to hear many loved it. The ending of that game is perfect imo, I really don't want a sequel.
@banacheck hardest difficulty is pretty much exactly the same as easy tbh. It's the only way to get an S rank with deliveries. The combat might be a bit trickier but not by much at all. Its a very easy, and very fun platinum to achieve
@SuperNintendoMii I have seen plenty of react videos, read so many reviews but I never stumbled across homophobia. To me it’s a lame excuse. „Let’s put LGBTQ characters into our product and if people don’t like it for all other valid reasons we can still draw the phobia card.“
Ellie was gay in the first game too. It was a non-issue. The Game was lovely and people fell for the storytelling. Literally no one should care about how other people fictional or real like to mingle. Some like it straight some weird and some even like going in dry! Why would anyone care?
@Scollurio well the reviews weren't critical of lev being transgender or Ellie being a lesbian, but I was referring to the negativity that has engulfed the game. I'm sure you've seen what they've been putting up with, this site has shone a spotlight on it for starters. I'm really referring to the fact valid criticism is fair, but its all being overshadowed by what people like Laura Bailey are having to deal with. The valid criticism some people have is literally being drowned out.
But certainly there are people who just hate it for Ellie being a lesbian. I would disagree that Naughty Dog are branding people who don't like it bigots, I think that it's a case of branding the people sending those tweets bigots, and they are.
@oldschool1987 You can get S-rank on Normal but there's the S-rank that says "Legend of Legends" on it that you can only get on the hardest setting. I don't think it changes anything other than marking it on your profile for bragging rights.
@Matroska you're right! That's what I meant, I forgot the name of the rank. It doesn't change much within the game, its only required for the platinum, which most won't be bothered with.
What did you think of the game?
@Scollurio
Man, it already is successful. So what if sales drop. It doesn't matter anymore.
I bet someday, after you play the game, you'll appreciate it.
@oldschool1987 I love it. Still playing it through, TLoU2 got in the way but I've finished that now. I love the story, characters and all the Kojima stuff - the only problem is I find escort missions and timed things really stressful in games and DS is basically one big escort mission in the sense you're escorting cargo around and trying to keep it in good condition, and you're sometimes timed too. Worth it for the atmosphere and Kojima weirdness, though!
Its slightly too soon too call (ghost of tsushima yet to arrive) but it is testament to what a blinder Sony have played this generation when it's genuinely difficult to call game of the generation.
Last of us made me feel tense and had my heart racing in ways that a game has never managed previously. It is sublime. I love it in a way i didnt think would be possible
With that said, its not my game of the generation. That honor has to go to one of Horizon Zero Dawn or God of War - with God of War getting the nod in my book.
1. God of War
2. Horizon Zero Dawn
3. Last of us Part 2
4. Persona 5 (Royal)
5. Spiderman
6. Final Fantasy 7 Remake
7. Life is Strange
8. Astrobot Rescue Mission
9. Ratchet and Clank
10. Uncharted 4/Lost Legacy
Now i've still to play games like Witcher 3 (i know) but wow, what a generation. I am confident Ghost will be in my top 10.
As for Naughty Dog, i hope the bullying online doesn't blunt their creativity and creative freedom. I hope they come back with a new ip next. They have shown so many times how they can create something new and strike gold.
@SuperNintendoMii I think all of this has nothing to do with the game itself, ND or Sony. It's just the unfortunate times we live in. Look at the world. People are eager to pick up on things that separate us, to hate on each other. No matter what game ND would have made, some people would hate some things about it. I think this is crucial to remember.
Also that Laura Bailey thing. There is no need to discuss if this is acceptable. It's not. But Laura Bailey is not the only celeb and TLOU II is not the only "trigger" for a certain kind of people. The moment you're in the public eye you gotta take the flak that is the "public opinion" and some fringe opinions are rather disgustig.
Bringing 6 selected awful tweets up to artificially "overshadow" all the valid criticism about the game is not a good move imho. Youtubers get death threats, all other celebs get death threats for the most stupid of reasons.
Again, it's disgusting, but it's also "expected" given the world we live in and as a public figure like Laura Bailey, I am sure it's not the first time she's got similar tweets/mails for whatever reason. But coming forward now to chime in into the controversy surrounding the game feels like a dirty PR move to me, to be honest.
@aVagabond I don't care either way. I just think it's stupid to declare a game a "winner" after the first month of sales. Think GTA V, this thing won't stop selling. For valid reasons.
And again, I don't wish it to burn. I just think it could have been way more successful. Just because you think it's enough... you should know, in any industry, it's never enough. Also I wonder if they hampered a potential part III's success with the stance they took. But time will tell.
Again, personally, I don't care how well it sells. My enjoyment of life is not dependent on the possible misfortune of an already ultra-successful game developer and neither should yours in any way or form.
It's a masterpiece, there were parts I wasn't sure on but after thinking it through I love this game.
@Rob_230 I'm a big fan of both God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn but I genuinely think The Last of Us Part II is a level above both of those games.
No RDR2 in your list? This is still my No.1 with The Witcher 3 very close behind. Part II just edging out Persona 5 for the bronze.
Just my personal preference of course.
👍
@Col_McCafferty Oh my goodness. How on earth did i forget RDR2 😲 facepalm. Thanks for calling me out. I LOVED RDR2 (not as much as RDR1 though which was probably my fave PS3 game).
Yeah, that can have my number 5 slot. It would be higher, but i felt that parts of the story did drag a little too much. When it gets going, its wonderful.
Last of us 2 so very nearly gets first place. Its so so close. My single complaint was that as i started the second half of the game i felt it sagged slightly. Not due to story (i loved it all), but it just felt like the game was maybe 5 hours too long. It picked up again as the second part really got going.
God of War could have gone on longer and i would have welcomed it. And Horizon was just such a departure from Guerilla. The world building - and particularly frozen wilds dlc were just so magical.
Last of us 2 is possibly the best technical showcase i have ever seen though, rivalled only by RDR2. Being a more linear adventure though means those details could be magnified by 10. So so good. In fact i have the art book ariving today as i fell in love with the environments. I am actually playing the game a second time now to mop up the trophies for the Plat.
Persona 5 beats RDR for me just for its pure style. The music is perfect and the game doesnt get boring for the duration of its long long run time. I loved it. It really evoked a sense of being in Japan (although special shout out to Yakuza 0 which just sits outside my top 10)
@Scollurio The game is the fastest selling PS4 game yet you think it could have done better? Sounds to me like you have way too high expectations especially comparing it to GTA V what even Red Dead 2 can't reach. The game is selling really well fact, a vocal minority won't change anything.
@Rob_230 No problem, glad I was able to jog your memory.
😉
Yes, both RDR2 and Part II are technically the true marvels of this gen although HZD remains the prettiest game I've played on the PS4.
I only finished Persona 5 in late April having started it mid-March. Obviously lockdown played a huge part but it's also damned addictive. It's probably the most sheer fun I've had with a game since maybe Skyrim. Great characters, challenging yet very cool combat and of course killer music.
Based on what I have played and finished this would be current top ten of this gen.
1 - Red Dead Redemption 2
2 - The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
3 - The Last of Us Part II
4 - Persona 5
5 - Horizon Zero Dawn
6 - God of War
7 - Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
8 - INSIDE
9 - Batman: Arkham Knight
10 - Days Gone
As you can see I tend to only play AAA games but I really enjoyed Limbo on the 360 and INSIDE topped it.
I'm currently playing Death Stranding (which could enter my list), haven't played Final Fantasy VII remake yet with Ghost of Tsushima and Cyberpunk to come.
@Scollurio I would agree that whatever Naughty Dog would have made, there would have been people to hate on it. However, the level of rage that they are getting from this is way, way beyond mere 'nerd rage' that we see quite often in gaming. This is completely off the scale.
I would disagree that coming forward with the tweets seems like a pr move. Neil Druckmann getting antisemitic messages and Laura Bailey getting people say they will literally kill her are not pr. Its something that people come forward and say, but I think it's also important to highlight that there are a lot of people out there that are totally unhinged and, in America's case, these lunatics are allowed to carry a gun which just makes the situation worse. All it takes is one person to follow through on a threat...
But yes, it is a sad time we live in where this sort of thing is the norm. The Internet has been a great invention but unfortunately is has also allowed people who are quite clearly mentally unstable to flourish with little to no repercussions for their actions. And I don't see it getting any better unless the police start locking these people up.
@WallyWest Again yes it's selling fast, based on preorders and expections of gamers. But July will be interesting to see. If sales do drop off after the preorders and early adopters then yes it could have done better, just like GTA V keeps selling in the long run. I'm perfectly fine with whatever amount of copies it moves in the end, it's just interesting to see with such a heavily debated title, how it will turn out in the end. Also where are the numbers for North America? You do realize that the numbers shipped don't equal numbers actually sold yes? A really interesting case!
@SuperNintendoMii Well Druckman wanted to make a divisive game. He succeeded, now he gotta take the flak. That's just business. When Lenovo changed the Trackpad on the Thinkpads? Or anyone remember Army of Two III? There are plenty of exampels where going against your audiences expectations there's an uproar. Especially true in the music industry (oh, they became mainstream...).
I don't mean that the messages Bailey and Druckmen get are made up. I meant that bringing them to the spotlight is a PR gag, they are victimizing themselves to point the interest of the public eye away from a game that does have it's legitimate problems. Also it's hard to argue against such vile messages. They are revolting and disgusting, so clearly, the fanbase must be toxic. If it's only a tiny percentage of the whole, who cares? Headlines!
What I mean is that everyone gets such messages, who is a public figure. Can you imagine what would happen if Trump would show us his inbox? But it doesn't even need someone as controversial as Trump, people are easily triggered these days and just like you say, until those people outing legitmate threats aren't locked up by the police, things won't change. Too bad that many of the exact same kind of people are those calling to "defund the police".
The world has really turned into a crazy s*ithouse and what we see in online discourse, entertainment and media is NOT the problem, it's just the symptoms of a rotting society.
@Scollurio Some advice stop using GTA V as the measure as its like saying Joker could have done better because it didn't make Avengers Endgame numbers, basically you're using an impossible measure. The game so far is doing extremely well and is one of the biggest selling games this year, a better measure is Spider-Man or God of War and yeah TLoUP2 is doing very very well next to them.
@WallyWest Both of which did have a 30-40% sales dropoff in the second week after release, whereas TLOU II sits at 80%.
@oldschool1987 & Fuzzymonkeyfunk
Thanks for the reply's. That's good know thanks, I was wondering how to get the S Rank on the deliveries, for the trophies I thought I might have missed somethin. I don't use guides unless I am forced too, I like to try and discover everything it's probably why I have a big backlog lol.
@banacheck I don't think any trophies are missable, pal. This guide might help, there's no spoilers, just read the road map on how to get the platinum
https://www.powerpyx.com/death-stranding-trophy-guide-roadmap/
50% of these purchases are from the gimps who claimed they were boycotting it after watching the leaks. They just needed to shave their necks first.
@Col_McCafferty
So happy you enjoyed Persona. What a game. In fairness, you did well to do it so quickly! With kids i manage to get an hour or two here and there so it takes a reallllly long time to complete such a huge game these days. But its totally worth it. One of the few games i have been playing through for a second time. Haha dont encourage me to return to skyrim. Last time i played it i clocked 180 hours. The VR version is mighty tempting though.
I love your top 10. I personally thought Inside was good, but didnt love it as much as many others. I was kind of confused by the ending. Interesting concept though! My indie game of the generation was probably everybody's gone to the rapture. That game was eerie and dripped atmosphere. There are others but generally if they are available for the Vita (where i played most, such as guacamelee and rogue legacy) then i didnt include on this list.
I enjoyed batman, but the over reliance on the batmobile disappointed me. Arkham Asylum remains my personal favourite in that series. On a side note the two batman telltale games were excellent.
I bought days gone in the recent days of play sale so i look forward to checking that out - although probably not until after ghost of tsushima which i am so hyped for. Japan is my favourite country so i just cannot wait to explore the environments
I will pick up death stranding at some point, but just sooo much to play at the moment. No way i could justify getting PS5 at launch with my back log 😬
Cyberpunk will be incredible. So excited for that one. 2020 is just an unbelievable final year for playstation 4:
Final fantasy 7 (based on your list, you will love it. Its incredible), last of us 2, Ghost of Tsushima, cyberpunk, dreams, resident evil, yakuza 7, persona 5 royal to name but a few!!
@Rob_230 Ha, looking back I think I should have taken more time with P5 but it was just too darned good!
Recently finished Last of Us 2 and in all honesty I feel the same way about that game. Games like these are so good though that when you get you chance to game you don't want to be playing anything else!
INSIDE's ending is incredible although I wasn't sure if I had done it right! I had to replay the previous few chapters again just to make sure.
Yes the batmobile overall was a bit of a letdown but I loved almost everything else about Knight. Spider-Man was a lot of fun but the map is too small and the main story is too short. Knight for me was the superior superhero game of its gen although it was close.
I like what I have seen of Final Fantasy VII. If I didn't have a backlog I would've bought it day one but at the time I still had Days Gone and AC Odyssey to finish.
I'm not as hyped for Cyberpunk as I thought I would be. FP only is a problem plus it just looks too 'cool' and lacking real heart, if that makes sense. I will definitely end up playing it at some point (probably on the PS5) but there are other games out there that excite me more including Ghost of Tsushima.
Anyway, nice to have a positive conversation about gaming online. These occasions are often quite rare these days!
👍
The game really reflects the employee crunches ND went through. Although it's really not as good as its predecessor, I'd still give it a 4.5/10.
Still not buying this game, there are a lot of others I could play a get more out of. Almost finished Ys I on the PC, and oldie but goodie.
