After having topped the Japanese software charts at launch, Ghost of Tsushima has been forced from its throne by the seemingly unstoppable Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Still, the PlayStation 4 exclusive has maintained a steady momentum, selling an additional 53,000 copies. It's the kind of drop that we expect to see from non-Nintendo Switch titles these days, but there's no denying that Ghost of Tsushima has done well for itself considering that it was hit with stock shortages in Japan.
Now we'll just have to wait and see whether the game can stick it out in the top 10. More often than not, new releases tend to enjoy just a short stint of two to three weeks in the Japanese charts, but given the positive attention that Ghost has been getting -- particularly from prominent figures in the Japanese game industry -- it may have some legs.

It’s because New Horizons just got an update. That aside they’re good games that are getting their well-deserved spotlight & that’s what matters.
Horrible generation for PS4 over there in terms of hardware sold, and what's more concerning about that is the PS4 had really good Japanese support. Guess that market really is just done with home consoles.
@Gamer83 Ps4 sold most in usa first and japanese second, so while not as good as japanese ps2 sold number, it's still okay compared to other country that's not usa.
I’m annoyed my wee brother got the prime spot in our AC island, the idiot never bothers to check it and I can barely do anything as just a resident. If only I could launch a military coup, turn the island into a banana republic and make all the residents call each other Comrade.
I wouldn't be surprised if this game passes a million copies in Japan. It is still sold out everywhere (Amazon Japan will deliver mid August).
The PS4 did really well during the pandemic here since most people are working from home. Tons of people I know got PS4's just for FFVII.
@avenovah @wiiware
It's down from PS3 which was down from PS2. That's not a good trend. I wouldn't care, except I tend to prefer Japanese games to Western ones (the exception being Sony's in-house teams) and it does concern me for what Japanese support could end up being on PS5. PS3 had plenty of Japanese support but the devs tried to 'Westernize' their games and many of them were worse off because of it with Resident Evil and Final Fantasy in particular becoming laughing stocks.
@nessisonett The moment you said "Banana Republic", I was scared
I got the platinum trophy a few nights ago and have to say, I absolutely loved my time with Tsushima. Now I am reflecting on the game I am starting to compare it to other open world games I have enjoyed and, whilst it was no doubt a stellar game, I am settling on the notion that I feel Horizon Zero Dawn was a better game.
I think you need to step back a little and allow some time when comparing how a game stacks up. I have seen so many comments suggesting it's the best exclusive on PS4 but I really don't think it can compete with Bloodborne or God of War for those kinds of honours.
@HotGoomba I mean, the main exports on my island are apples so I guess it would be an Apple Republic? All I know is that the current regime has run its course, the populace are dealing with a leader that provides no public services and leaves all his work to the poor secretary. Isabelle’s a bootlicker, she’ll fall in line soon enough.
Japan loves the hell out of handheld gaming. Not surprised at all to still see the Switch taking the wind out of PS4 hardware/software sales. Here's to hoping that Sony can one day get back into handheld gaming because the Vita was sooooo good
@Gamer83 it sold well for Japan.
I thought Physical Copies had been sold out in Japan as well sure that played a part.
The fact a western take on Japanese history has done this well over there is pretty incredible honestly.
@Kefka2589 Exactly my same thought, AC is targeted for way more people and the fact the a PS4 came and do that is good news for PS.
@Gamer83 Japanese support will be super fine on playstation system because their games will sells way better on ps5 compared to xbox x or nintendo system.
The main reason last-gen japanese games are "westernized" is because xbox 360 is more popular than ps3 and japan publisher want to appeal to that usa centric xbox 360 audience.
At least it outsold Joel in One in sales.
Nintendo is a serious force to be reckoned with. How many copies did Grounded sell?
@wiiware think it sold most in Europe
@obiwan3001 Japanese is the second most ps4 sold in one single country if I remember correctly while europe is severals different country.
@WallyWest I mean, seeing your native history and culture inspire Fiction abroad can be pretty swell, stereotype bonanza or not. As a Belarusian, I know I could be particularly in the market for, say, an Assassin's Creed game taking place sometime/somewhere in the Duchy or Commonwealth haydays - or even during the centuries in the empire's belly as long as it's still the familiar territories in question.
@Lovespuds You find HZD better than GoT? Disagreed, one of the reasons why I find GoT better than Horizon is the fact that it encourages you to look more around the world and pay attention instead of looking at a bunch of markers. Also while GoT and HZD have different types of gameplay, GoT just does the bow and arrow so much more better and that's feeling less arcade like and the arrow ACTUALLY has drop. Arrows in HZD go to space for no reason. This also means you can just spam the hell out of arrows with less skill for precision. It could be because of the robot monsters(Especially the super fast ones) which could be understandable why it's that way but I really hate it. Last thing is that side characters in the HZD are just so forgettable and not interesting at all. Only side character I found interesting was Lance Riddick's character.
@Nepp67
Horses for courses mate, we can like different things but I would just like to stress, I love Tsushima too. Personally, I felt the story was much more compelling in Horizon, I was really engrossed in finding out why the world was in the shape it was. Tsushima 's story was much more predictable I feel.
As for side characters I agree to an extent, but in reality, only a few of the side characters in Tsushima had fleshed out story lines, the rest were pretty much repetitive fetch qusts too and largely forgettable. I don't mind this so much, it is par for the course in open world games, but I personally felt Horizon was far less repetitive.
Each to their own I guess, have a good weekend.
@Lovespuds I don't mind repetition if it's decent and the gameplay is good and enjoyable. There are some sidequests that are pretty memorable(Like the Sago Mill or finding a Fox Den only to see it destroyed) but yeah I agree a lot of them were pretty repetitive and forgettable besides the character driven side quests which make up for it imo since we got memorable moments with Norio, Ishikawa, Yuna, Masako, and especially Yuriko.
But anyways I find GoT better than Horizon and you find Horizon better than GoT. Have a good weekend as well!
