Ghost of Tsushima has done incredibly well for itself in Japan. The numbers are in, and the open world title has enjoyed the best launch sales of any first-party PlayStation 4 game. Sucker Punch's latest moved 222,000 copies, which was more than enough to rocket the title to the top of the Japanese software charts. Its closest competitor was fellow new release Paper Mario: The Origami King, which sold less than half of Ghost's total.
Having received word that Ghost of Tsushima had sold out in Japan following its release last week, we were expecting a big result for Sony -- and the PS4 exclusive has delivered. It'll be interesting to see whether it can sustain some kind of momentum in Japan going forward -- most PS4 games these days tend to have a short stint at the peak before falling out of the top ten completely.
In any case, given Ghost of Tsushima's setting, it's nice to see that it's been a hit with Japanese gamers.

Congrats to Sucker Punch, impressive success!
The π» ghost as strike again.well done sucker punch.now give me sly cooper collection and sly cooper 4.word β up son
Well deserved. One of my favorite games this gen so far.
Looking forward to playing it one day. From what I've seen, it seems to be well deserved. Thrilled for Sucker Punch.
@avenovah I can't even remember the last one Sony has made tbh...
I am really enjoying the game - though I really need to start doing story-missions. I found I actually care about the side quests even if they are kind of repetitive. Death to all the digital Mongols!
Plus, I love the the Zen nature of exploration.
A great exclusive to end the generation. Fantastic job, Sucker Punch and Sony!
I just lost in Tsushima for 6 to 8 and doing nothing if main quests and very little side quests but enjoying haikus.... Hot springs....honor shrines.......Bamboo sticks.... Free hostages.....
@NomNom Is Parasite Eve even counted I mean it's like an Action RPG tho
It is a great game and a good result for Sony! I haven't finished it as I am enjoying the side quests and exploration so much
@playstation1995 perhaps the inclusion of the outfit in GoT was a nod to something happening π€
Wasn't this game supposed to bomb b/c of bad TLOU2 reviews or some woke nonsense or something? π
Pretty sure I read comments like that on here recently. smh
Nice, congrats for SP π
I can't get enough of the game, playing it nearly every night, this game can last me until ps5 launch lol.
Edit: I just realized, when you set the guiding wind to target, not only the wind blow to said target when you swipe the touchpad, but the particles (leaves, grass, flower pollen, etc) also always blow to the directions of target without you swiping the pad, so you can just follow the directions of particles rather than always swiping the pad.
Man the attention to details of this game is amazing π
Infamous second son to Ghost of Tsumima the PS4 has come full circle π
@NomNom
Folklore maybe?
@lacerz Oh how I wish there were a sequel to this game! It's like a darker, more adult version of PokΓ©mon.
Toss up for open world game of the gen for me between Ghosts and Horizon. I am really, really digging this game though. So much fun.
What's the second best selling exclusive? Would be nice to have a comparison.
Got it this morning! Only a few hours in but I'm loving it, can't wait to see how this story unfolds Enjoying the experience without an onscreen map as well!!
Well deserved. The west meets the east.
@NomNom Legend of Dragoon!
Paper Mario doesn't seem to have gone down well for a Nintendo game
@NomNom @avenovah
The last guardian by Japan studio publication by Sony entertainment
Not surprised - Loving it!... had to pull myself to bed last night.
That it look this good on my vanilla PS4 is just insane. I stop to see a sunrise... I have not done that in a videogames, Ever!
There was fog and falling leaves, and bamboo, divine wind and sun coming trough it all π€£ππ
Well done indeed, game looks amazing. Will pick up!
@carlos82 People are not impressed with the new combat system and I have to admit, I love paper mario, but I also am not too thrilled about it. Will pick it up when it's on sale though.
I'm loving it so far.
@lacerz super underrated on PS3, loved that game. We'll never see a sequel as the studio is now defunct.
@Ridwaano does that count as a JRPG?
@NomNom
I thought it was hmm..
Then Malicious that is a jrpg for sure
@Ridwaano yes, I believe that counts. That is old, I feel Sony has had to have some first party JRPGs in the last decade. I just can't seem to think of any... Does demon souls count? Technically since it uses medieval themes I am hesitant to classify it as a JRPG.
Freedom wars for the Vita was one of my favourite games. Although I think it may be an action RPG.
I'm so happy this game was recepted well globally...definitely look forward to playing it in December or January for half the price .
Much better than that TLOU 2 garbage
@seari84 Indeed
@NomNom
Demon soul count for sure! RpG made by Japanese π― people
So glad its done well in Japan. Only people complaining about the game i've seen are western media who are still butthurt its doing better fan reception wise and sales than Last of Us 2. And it didn't even need to push agendas either.
