The current generation is rife with retro remakes and remasters, but they don't get much more retro than this. Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX has been announced for PlayStation 4, and it's a full remake of the character's very first game. It dates back to 1986 on SEGA's Master System, and it's now getting a major facelift for a modern release.

Alex Kidd used to be seen as SEGA's mascot until a certain hedgehog rolled into view -- it's a series that commanded a lot of respect back in the day. As you can see in the debut trailer for the remake, it's a no nonsense action platformer about jumping through levels and taking out baddies.

Aside from the obvious improvements to the visuals and sound, DX is set to feature brand new levels, new modes such as Boss Rush, alternative boss fights, and a retro mode so you can play the old way.

This follows in the footsteps of other SEGA revivals; Sonic Mania brought Genesis-era hedgehog action back, Streets of Rage 4 recently revived the beat-'em-up, and now it's Alex Kidd's turn. The game is scheduled to arrive in the first quarter of 2021 on PS4. Additionally, because Sony requires all PS4 games to be compatible with PS5 starting in July, it'll definitely be playable on the next-gen system too.
