Update: Supposed insider Dusk Golem has put his credibility on the line once more, claiming that next year’s Resident Evil game is Resident Evil 8 for both the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. According to the rumourmonger, it started life as Resident Evil: Revelations 3, but due to positive internal feedback it’s been revamped as a full-blown sequel. Like the excellent Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, it will apparently be a first-person game.
Apparently, a reveal is imminent, and there’ll be an emphasis on “hallucinations, occultism, and insanity”. Of course, this is all coming courtesy of an unproven source right now. We’ll need to wait and see if any of this turns out to be true.
Original Article: Capcom is keeping itself busy as the PlayStation 5 nears release. Rumours are flying regarding an all-new instalment which is currently in development, although the source is ResetEra poster Dusk Golem writing on his Twitter account. Given that the so-called insider has several proclamations flying around right now – including Sony’s purported production of a Silent Hill title – we’d recommend you exercise caution until some of these are proven true.
Nevertheless, he claims that a new Resident Evil title has been in development since 2016, and it’s currently targeting a 2021 release. Apparently, this is the “biggest departure the series has ever taken”, which is bold considering Resident Evil VII: Biohazard shifted the entire perspective of the series to first-person. We’ve seen some speculation alluding to witches and vampires as opposed to zombies, which would be a change.
Despite the warnings, Dusk Golem reckons that the game’s internal testing has been going well, and that it’s a “high quality” game. It’ll allegedly be announced “really soon”, although obviously coronavirus could have an impact on the publisher’s plans. Make of all this what you will, we suppose – and in the meantime, check out our Resident Evil 3 PS4 review and Resident Evil 3 Remake walkthrough.

Perfectly believable, but nothing to get excited about for now.
@kyleforrester87 hopefully you don't whine about that resident evil game either
I mean, with the type of BOW that Eevie was and the ending of Revelations 2, I could totally see a new bio weapon looking something like a witch or vampire.
At least vampires still bite people’s necks so we’d still get some cool ‘You Are Dead’ scenes haha
@Undeadlogan hopefully you go play in traffic
A new Resident Evil? Doesn't take much of a Nostradamus to predict that one, does it.
4K hDR Ray traced door opening screens are in the chamber
Maybe it's a open world resident evil title, either like the witcher 3, or more action and multiplayer heavy like the divisions 2.
Not for a mainline obviously but Ive always wondered why RE never got a tower defense style game. I guess cause CoD did Zombies maybe? But Im talking a true Tower defense. Not hammer a board over a window a shoot at said window lol.
@wiiware an open world one would be nice although it will probably be more like Days Gone than Witcher 3
@Undeadlogan you really are a waste of space huh?
@kyleforrester87 I'm quite excited for Resident Evil: 8 😉
Hmm interesting. Hypothetically speaking, let's say the rumors are true, I'm curious what new direction Capcom would take the series.
@Nyne11Tyme this could be awesome, never thought of that for this series 🤔
@carlos82 now THAT's some scary sh*t.
@Undeadlogan you still getting upset at everyone who doesn't say entirely positive things about Resident Evil? Grow up.
I'm suddenly thinking that very descriptive 'leak' a while back that everyone assumed was a potential Order 1886 sequel could maybe be this. I remember them saying they couldn't reveal what the character was wearing as it would give the game away (STARS?). I might try and find it again and see if it could match.
Loved all sequels. My favourite is Chris Redfield. Awesome character!
@FullbringIchigo Or maybe like 3rd person dying light, that take place in one big city rather than open environment like days gone (and witcher 3). I hope capcom will release trailer or something on ps5 launch event
@Grimwood @Grimwood How is item management a Japanese thing? I've played countless western titles with limited space, or let's certainly not forget the modern "2 gun limit in 1st/3rd person shooters" trope. That needs to go.
@DonJorginho you guy's do like whine and complain huh? And then the next resident evil you gonna whine and complain over petty crap again as usual
@oldschool1987 positive things? are you drunk or high?
@Undeadlogan are you still crying? You salty troll.
@Undeadlogan You've been warned in a different article and you're still insulting other users. That's a ban!
@ShogunRok thank you
first person? i was hoping after the success of Resi 2 and 3 remakes it would be 3rd person or at the very least have options for both
“hallucinations, occultism, and insanity"
Sounds like outlast.
Don't know if that is good or bad for a resi game.
@FullbringIchigo Yeah I'll be disappointed if it's first-person but if plenty of people like it so be it. I'll be happy if they give us another quality third-person remake like Code Veronica or Dino Crisis.
RE + RayTracing. Can't wait to see this.
@Undeadlogan "you guy's do like whine and complain huh". Oh, that delicious irony!
Would this be the first First-Person RE game? The only one I’ve ever played is 5 and I really liked how it felt similar to Uncharted and the like. Killed my interest with the First-Person switch though.
@AhmadSumadi resident evil 7 is first person.
If true, it will be interesting to see if this also has a vr mode!
Hope the cross-gen rumour is true as i wont have upgraded by then
I’m praying for PSVR capabilities. VII is the whole reason I bought one!
I did not like the first person in 7. It was really clunky and annoying.
Not to mention all the enemies looked the same...
The family was fun and all, but that game was kind of a chore to play sometimes, and if they're not going to do it right then I'm not gonna bother with it.
@3MonthBeef the fixed camera angles helped those first 3 games too, never knowing what was round the next corner and hearing the moaning and scratching while not being able to look around for it
Well that sounds absolutely terrifying. In the best way possible, it's a no from me.
I think RE 7, despite being in first person, was way closer to the original RE than RE 4, 5 and 6 so I don't think it's a problem of the camera.
VR Optional please if not at launch in its future. RE7 remains one of the better VR games I’ve played. Took me forever simply because I could only play at night.
Oh great another RE7 🙄 has much I enjoyed it, to me that was in no way a traditional RE game as Capcom could of claimed it was a new IP under a different name and none of us would of batted an eye lid.
I much enjoy the RE universe we see in the remakes of RE2 and RE3 in 3rd person despite RE7 being more tense and an actual horror. I should at least be grateful that we’ve had the recent remakes.
The first resi is still my favourite, remember my m8 picking it up when we were abou 12 and all of us going back to his to play it and were blown away. Think the mansion setting was brilliant. Enjoyed every resi except 5, didn't play 6 think the bad memories from 5 stopped me lol. And 7 was really good but the story just went a bit nah by the end. VR was brilliant still haven't managed to finish it just too much lol.
Witches and vampires. If I want Castlevania, I'd be on Twitter begging Konami for it every day. In RE I want zombies, zombie dogs, mutated reptiles like alligators, and new monstrosities that they devs can make try to make you believe come from bio-experiments. I don't love the first person perspective but I gave 7 a pass for it because the rest of the game was high quality. I'd do the same for 8, but some stuff is a no-go. That aside, I was hoping for a return to third person and seeing a pairing of Jill and Claire who haven't been at the forefront in a new RE mainline game for a really long time. Oh well, maybe Resident Evil 9.
Why first person again! 🤬
Apparently it will have the typical zombies instead of the stupid molded from 7 which id be very happy about.
@Gamer83 I'm sure these "witches" and "vampires" will have their origins in bioexperiments.
@andreoni79 It was closer to RE1 than any other game, even 2 and 3, which both were more action oriented.
@oldschool1987 you started this, with the snarky comment. Don’t play the victim
It best be in VR. After playing through RE7 completely in VR I don't think I could go back to playing these games flat.
@Arnna I see you made another account because you're incredibly salty and upset 😂you're the professional victim here, acting personally victimised because we don't gush about Resident Evil.
Grow up, kid.
@Orpheus79V
I appreciate your optimism and willingness to give Capcom the benefit of the doubt. As great as the recent string of releases has been (even RE 3 remake) I remember how badly off track Capcom got with damn near all its IPs at the end of last gen and well into the middle of this one. This, imo, is just not the way to go, especially after all the work that has been done in the remakes. I like RE 7, a lot, one of my favorite games of the gen, but REmakes 2 and 3 have shown the series works even better in third person and they've done a great job building this 're-imagined' world. Imo, best course of action would be to remake Code Veronica next and then have RE 8 set inside that universe. Can still have it pick up after 7's storyline, and focus it around Chris (like some rumors have suggested), just return it to the third person and with more traditional enemy types and newer ones that are more inline with RE and not that would be more fitting of Castlevania or Devil May Cry.
@Undeadlogan bro, stop whining about people whining. It makes you look silly
Man I'm ready this is great news. Hopefully it turns out to be true.
I wouldn't mind at all if RE8 has a completely different feel. Capcom really turned it around this gen with RE7, RE2R and some would say with RE3R. They have earned back my trust.
Something more along of Silent Hill would be fantastic if they could pull it off with the hallucinations, occultism, and insanity! That stuff is right up my alley! The perspective the game plays in wouldn't bother me at all. I thought it was rather refreshing being able to play RE7 in FPS and loved playing it in VR!
Bring it!
@Gamer83 - Even as someone who probably prefers RE2R to RE7, I can't say going backwards is a good way forward, especially now that we've had two such remakes in the same number of years. At this point, going ahead with a new game that continues on from RE7 in taking the franchise in a new direction is probably the best option; you can always have the Code:Veronica remake afterwards for that more old-school aesthetics, but for now, something new is probably best.
@FullMetalWesker
Something new is fine but I want it to feel like Resident Evil. This is basically like the games I mentioned or as somebody else brought up, Silent Hill. I always keep an open mind and give new games that try something quite different from previous entries in a series a chance but this stuff doesn't sound like how I'd want RE to continue at all, even picking up after 7 it sounds out of place.
@FullbringIchigo Best days of Resident Evil in my opinion wondering will this weapon I have in my hand deal with it or should I go back and get that shotgun I just out away in the trunk
@Nakatomi_Uk i'll be honest sometimes when i go back and play Resi 2 (Dreamcast) i just want to mow down everything so i play on EZ Mode and you start the game with a Uzi that has infinite ammo and no reload
it's fun
To be honest, they have tried something new all the time with the series. The only thing holding the stuff together is the B movie tripes and the underlying evil corporation stuff. I'm ready to move on, just make it work like RE7 did and it's all good.
@Daleaf Resident Evil 5 wasnt bad it just wasnt Resident Evil especially the zombies with guns was bad. I liked the characters Sheva was cool but it was a pity it was coöp it took away the scary stuff.
Lets hope they will still release more remakes then. 😆
I will always see Resident Evil as a 3rd person game or at least give a option.
Have to be honest this new RE game that's coming out for the ps5 & 4 saying that it will be first person game resident evil is a first person game all ways has been I was all so hoping for a DINO CRISIS REBOOT looks like that won't be happening so all 3 RE games get a reboot but DC gets left buried disappointed I am
Really hope it's not first person... And if it started out as Revelations 3 it would make no sense for it to be
Loving re3 so far. Gonna go back and play re2 from last year after this.
Man, I love resident evil
This rumour/information has been around for some time now and in all honesty when i first heard about it i didn't even consider for one second this could be bs. It makes complete sence from all perspectives
Capcom and the development team involved in RE7 were actively expressing their excitement at stearing RE in a different direction MID development and considering its actual success, not to mention the massive boost it got with a VR addition, you would be a fool to think anything else.
While they pile the resources in to this new project expect them to just feed the fans with sugar coated versions of old games while they...oh wait... 🤔
Wasn't too big of a fan of the switch to first-person. The game felt like Outlast with guns, but it was still fun.
