Sony will publish a teardown of the PlayStation 5’s hardware soon, designer Mark Cerny has alluded in an interview with Digital Foundry. The overwhelmingly dense article – which expands upon many of the points made in the Marble Madness man’s recent presentation – makes references to the next-gen console’s cooling system. “We're saving [that] for our teardown, I think you'll be quite happy with what the engineering team came up with,” he said.
The Japanese giant has been mocked for the fan noise of its current consoles, with the PS4 Pro being particularly egregious. Cerny seems to be suggesting that the PS5 will run much quieter than its predecessors, but the proof will be in the pudding. We’re looking forward to more information being revealed in the near future, including what kind of form factor the format will adopt.

Is that Proto type model of PS5 ? 🤔
I am VERY interested in the PS5's cooling.
VERY interested indeed.
Does anyone else kind of hope it actually ends up looking like this? Just without the media buttons, keep the plenty of USB ports for peripherals and have backlit power and eject buttons in green and blue like the PS2?
The shape really has grown on me.
Yea I've just watched DF latest vid. Theres nothing new. If anything they ll confuse more people with those 'more details'.
Nice, I hope ps5 has better cooling solutions than ps4.
@Anti-Matter this is how the developers kit looks like but in black.
"the PS4 Pro being particularly egregious"
My 1tb base PS4 sounds like a jet fighter as well whenever I try to play something that's graphic-intensive It's even louder than my 12-year-old 360!
Final fantasy 7 arrived today. The installation disc made my ps4 sound like it was going to take off so, goodness knows how the game will be!
Yeah, but does it take Terafloppy Disks?
@ShaiHulud
Not sure why there's so much inconsistency with the Pro's noise level. I have a white CUH-7016b model and so does my friend but in black. His is like a jet and mine is almost silent. It's bizarre.
Personally, I don't care how loud cooling is. My 7215 Pro is quiet. If loud, fast, big cooling yields better performance, all for it.
@munkholt hold onto to your hat, super leak from reddit goes "it takes two terafloppys"
@GADG3Tx87 it could be down to a bad application/not enough thermal paste as applied at the time of manufacture on your friend's Pro. It may be worth it to open it up and repaste the APU with fresh, and better, thermal paste.
@GADG3Tx87 In no way would its appearance affect whether I would buy the console, but I really hope it doesn't look like that. It is absolutely hideous, and the more I see it, the more I dislike it.
@Turismo4GT
That's possible and I have offered to take a look at the inside of my friends model, I have a couple of tubes of Arctic Silver 5 hanging around. He's just reluctant to let me do so.
I had an original day one model that was kicking up a fuss on some games after a couple of years, gave it to a family member, stripped it down, cleaned it out and applied new TP, that thing is whisper quiet on the same games now.
We will see everything...after the PS5 comes out I wonder if SONY are holding back showing anything we can 'SEE' of the PS5 after 'The Last of Us Part 2' comes out? It seems that way but if people see the PS5 in action I doubt it will make people buy the game less anyway. Oh well hopefully this Millennium we will see it in action
@GADG3Tx87 No lol. They should invest in a mini-ITX form factor. But it all depends on what their cooling system looks like. (Fingers crossed for liquid cooling/ AIO)
My Wii still takes the cake for loudest. And it is loudest at the home screen. Literally sounds like its going to seize up and explode like mechanical gearing lol
Those quoted words are taken from the deep down ps5 reveal video. To be exact, Mark said them during the prerecorded video on 18th of March. It's nothing new. Refurbished article.
it looks like a modem from 2000
While I'm also ridiculously eager to see the big reveal, the UI, games, graphics etc, I'm starting to think that Sony is playing a deliberate long-game here by wooing the developers first and foremost.
They know the PS4 has a huge install base, and that they (myself included) will want to be able to upgrade their hardware, enjoy new software and still be able to enjoy their existing library. The fans are always going to be the fans.
But I now honestly think Sony has contacted Cerny via the Palantir and said "build me an army worthy of the next generation", and he's been on the charm offensive for several months now, bringing as many third-party developers as possible into the fold for them to see how PS5 is going to be the platform of choice to develop on.
I'm prepared to wager that within the first 12-24 months, PlayStation 5's list of timed exclusives and exclusive DLC/extra content over the XBX, as well as the number of third-party developers shouting from the rooftops about how PS5 has changed everything, will be as long as your arm.
@Anti-Matter is PS5 dev kit...
@ShaiHulud Have you actually ever heard a jet fighter?
@ShaiHulud
Best game to play on ps4 pro?
ACE COMBAT7
4k/hdr/real 3d jet engine sound.
😂😂.
@Chryssy75 That's actually not a bad idea!
