Well, here’s a humongous head-scratcher of a story: PS1 titles Grand Theft Auto and Grand Theft Auto 2 have been rated for release on, er, the PlayStation 3. New information published by European classifications board PEGI shows the two classic crime simulations have been awarded a 16 and an 18 age rating respectively.
“2D top down view free roam action game,” the synopsis reads. “Gameplay is based around being a criminal and includes stealing cars, shooting other gangsters, shooting pedestrians, [and] driving over people.” The consumer advice for the first title continues: “Contains glamorisation of crime and occasional strong bad language.”

To be honest, we don’t have a clue what’s going on here. There’s some speculation that the titles may have been rated for PlayStation Now, but that doesn’t seem all that likely to us. The alternative is that this is licensing related or an outright mistake. We’ll reach out to Rockstar to try and learn more, and we’ll let you know when hear back.

Well, at least as recently as 2015, the Dreamcast was still getting new games. Indie stuff, though, not old, big name games.

Cool. I just picked up a PS3 fat today. Hope it's true
@Matroska Which is very cool, but these are old PS1 games rated for PS3. You'd think if they wanted to revive them they'd at least be porting them to PS4, Xbox One, and Switch, right?
@get2sammyb Yeah, I agree. I was gonna say maybe it's for markets where the PS3 is still more in use than PS4 - like, who knows, maybe in Indonesia it's still big - but it's a PEGI rating which really throws that theory out the window.
Get them on the Vita!!!
I'd get these in a heart beat if they released for Ps4 (or the Switch)
I already have them but the convenience of not having to set up old consoles to play them would be fantastic
Perhaps PS5 in the future will use the PS1 games already on the store for PS3 & Vita. And they thought it wouldn't hurt releasing them now for extra revenue?
@YeoSprings I mean that would be awesome, but I think they’d need to be re-rated for PS5.
A mistake, maybe? If not then I guess the PS3 needs some love too I guess.
Surely it's a mistake. I'd be up for trying these out actually, even if just for the noatalgia. I can't imagine the first game has aged brilliantly, but from what I remember, GTA2 was pretty solid
@Gremio108 Isn't it basically the same but with different gangs and gang "affection" levels?
@YeoSprings Hope you’re right, but I have no hope in Sony pulling something like that off. It’ll be 10-15 PS2 games, 10-15 PS1 games and that’s it.
Both of these plus the two London expansions would be an awesome re release on any console, especially it they ported the PC versions.
I actually prefer this top down 2d GTA and find it more difficult to get into the 3d ones
played it recently on my PS Classic. Its aged very badly
Should release on ps now
PS3 port for ps5 maybe?
Where is GTA London? The best GTA ever made
@get2sammyb does PS Now have the same PS1 classics as PS3? That would make sense or maybe Rockstar know something we dont about PS5's backwards compatibility and it's just getting ahead of the game 😉
Yep, can't help but wonder if there's some sorta typing error-we know ps3 had a decent emulation of ps1,but you'd think this would surely have been more directed at ps4 etc.! That said it does sadly remind of the time there was supposed age ratings for GTA Liberty City & GTA Vice City Stories for the ill-fated ps2 classics on ps4!
Ditto like when those rumours of Suikoden 1 & 2 coming to ps4 as well...guess we wait and see.
@Matroska Pretty much, but I think it was a bit of a smoother experience. It was years ago when I played them though. They might both be a dog's dinner!
Man I had a gut feeling they might do there backwards compatibility with previous gens through PS Now. I really hope it's TRUE.
(Please add trophies) 😁
I say this is no mistake, perhaps maybe.. dare I say it... A tiny hint of Ps3 (therefore also Ps2+Ps1) back compat on Ps5? God I hope so
@Netbean Dude I've got that same feeling in my gut. I feel like this has to do with some sorta BC on PS5 probably through PS Now if I had to guess.
It's GTA we're talking about. Even if they released it on Atari 2600, I bet it will still make millions.
@Robocod Was a real shame how the PS2 games just faded out. The PAL emulatuon of San Andreas on PS4 wasn't great though, I find the music cuts out on occasion, and there is a weird 'grid' I notice on the screen when moving the camera.
Release them on PS4, Xbox One and Switch with Trophies and Achievements and they will sell like hot cakes. It would be absolutely bizarre if it really was only releasing on PS3.
Awesome. Will download asap
It would be nice to get a new release on the PS3 store though, my PS3 needs love
@Rob_230 they’d be awesome on there
@Ristar24 cool name 🤩
The PS1 and PS2 classics section has been a joke for years in the UK they did a small burst of games during the PS3 years when they first announced it. Then it died off hardly not releasing anything because of licensing issues and other companies now willing to release stuff.
It happened with the PS2 classics Rockstar have more games in that section than anyone, and it hasn't had any news games for what I've seen. And with PS Now yearly subscription available and PS5 I can't see any new released games "To buy NOW only", for PS2 theirs been so many games I've wanted for years.
SSX Tricky
Armored Core series
NFS Underground 1 and 2
Ace Combat series
Dynasty warriors 3
To name a few the classics area is a joke and always has been in the UK
@Ristar24 Yep,the ps2 emulator wasn't perfect but I think(?) hackers/modders found it could (in theory),run a lot more ps2 stuff than was officially released. My disappointment was more in finding the cut/altered content with various classic music tracks in both V.C./S.A.,but that's Take two being skint as usual!
Although one takes the internet with a pinch of salt-both these ports were supposedly based off the mobile releases rather than the ps2 originals-albeit S.A. obviously had the infamously hard RC plane missions & the hot coffee content-think of the children!
@Robocod Yeah, they were weird. They launched the GTA games with 50Hz versions forced in to 60Hz, which was pretty poor. They patched in proper frame pacing later, at least. I probably would have bought Vice City Stories if they had bothered to put it on PS4. Just seemed a real waste to announce PS2 then pretty much abandon it.
@Matroska this is a fascinating specimen of a release.
