Did you sample Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's various multiplayer modes as part of this past weekend's free access? If you did and it has convinced you into a purchase, you might want to buckle up for the long haul when it comes to downloading the game. The first-person shooter already takes up a gigantic amount of hard drive space on PlayStation 4, and its next update will increase its size to just under 200GB.
At the time of writing, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a 175.3GB install on PS4, but with a new 15GB patch going live tomorrow, that'll push it to an overall size of 190GB. You are required to download the update if you wish to keep playing the game, meaning it is mandatory for all players. That's a little bit ludicrous, isn't it? If you're still sporting a base PS4 console with just 500GB of space, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is going to take up nearly two-fifths of that storage. For just one game! What makes this worse is that the Activision Blog doesn't detail any substantial additions or changes that this patch will bring.
Therefore, we'll have to wait until tomorrow to see whether this upcoming patch is worth it or not. Are you running out of hard drive space thanks to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare? Complain in the comments below.

That's mental. That's almost a quarter of PS5's hard drive space.
That seems totally unecesaary
Seriously what’s wrong with this game? Can I install only the single player portion? I plan to buy this sometimes in the future.
As long as this is a contribution to the campaign and not more cosmetics for multiplayer, I'd go for it
And here I was just wanting to get this game on sale eventually to play the campaign...if it's that big, maybe not...unless I get a new external HDD with more space...
Maybe Activision is secretly using everyone's hard-drives as storage space for their own use.
I'm one of those people that still has a base PS4 with 500GB.
Guess I won't be playing COD Modern Warfare anytime soon then.
@BearsEatBeets
Haha, you mean like the Switch Cooking Mama being secretly used to datamine Bitcoins?
I think your onto something there mate
I have the uncharted base model. I used to be able to have about 40big AAA games now I've had to cut down to about half that. Might have to uninstall this game as 1 game as fun as it is isn't worth taking the space for other games I want.
Damn why not consume the whole hard drive by now 🤬
Was this confirmed by Activision? Because the way patches work on PS4, update files don't necessarily always add up to current game size. For example, if a game received 10 patches and each was 10Gb, the over all game size won't increase 100GB after applying al those patches, because each update file (in most cases) will overwrite the previous update, unless it's a DLC expansion or something.
Ridiculous.
Honestly it is.
Shakes head. Next gen is gonna be crazy for space
Wow that’s pretty mad. Might have to end up deleting things.
@Stocksy It shouldn’t be as bad, an SSD cuts down on repeated data although I reckon they’ll use the same space to create bigger games.
seriously HOW, it's a bloody CoD game FFS even a game like FFVII Remake is less that 100gb (heck XV is only a little over 100)
are you seriously telling me a Call of Duty game needs over twice the amount of space as a Final Fantasy game?
looks like the people at Activision don't know how to optimize
Reminds me of where I stopped updates of GTA V,(though been so long,I'd probably be better off restarting the story campaign anyhow), as I had zero interest in playing GTA Online. Its a shame the potential tech for ps5 (downloading the single player mode only etc.),is next gen only not for ps4 too!
Huge internal ssd ftw. Although I've been playing WWII more than MW lately. Overall it's the better game.
@wiiware
You can, actually. You can install the parts you want from the main menu of the game.
Guys! It is the Anti cheat program,..! They had too many cheaters. And many people turn Cross play off because of that.. So now they found a solution! 😉
@get2sammyb
Just think about what the size will be when they add next gen quality to the mix.
Just to let people know you can uninstall parts of the game, such as Spec Ops and Warzone.
By going to
SETTINGS - - - - General - - - - Game install.
Hope this saves up some space.
Can’t wait for that ps5 ssd. I know people say it will allow devs to be more efficient and I can see that from 1st party games but can see 3rd party still clocking in at 200gb and only being able to fit 4 games on it.
@Constable_What That’s great to hear, thanks
Platform holders should really require publishers to deliver optimized games in this day and age.
I only play Warzone with a few friends who also do the same but all have the whole game downloaded and installed on our consoles but not able to play because we obviously haven't paid for it. I'm still on a standard ps4 and have to delete the game to make enough space everytime for it to download. Terrible Virgin Internet also means that can take all day as well. If this keeps happening I'm going to have to stop playing this.
I beat the campaign in 3 hours- less time than it takes to install the damn game
I have a 1tb ps4 and a 1tb external hard drive both which are pretty full but this is crazy, I doubt I'll be playing this anytime soon or warzone for the same reason.
I know it includes all free dlc and warzone but, that is monstrous! Plus you need the same again in free space for the updates. Sort it out activision. Bend studios got Days Gone down to 40gb and thats got a horde!
200GB is madness even for a 1TB HDD.
This Game, GTA 5 & Fifa 20 will have your 500GB base PS4 full lol
That's not how patches work you bafoon....
Only 145GB....easy
This is ridiculous bro. If anything instead of just copying the same data to try and boost performance they're needs to be a program within these updates that deleted unused storage and data. I have a 500gb PS4 (which you only get 400gb false advertisement) I literally have 4 games. GTA, NFS, COD, AND 2K. THIS UPDATE IS RIDICULOUS SOMEBODY NEEDS TO GET SUED FOR NEGLIGENCE we are honest PS4 players we should not be forced to delete and go buy more data to play games THAT ARE ALREADY OVERPRICED. SONY I'M DISAPPOINTED AND EVERYONE OVER AT "ACTIVISION" who looks to only please themselves honestly. Call of duty is not the only game gamers play and the fact you think you can take up LITERALLY almost a third of somebody's memory is absurd. I'm appalled and it's beyond me this needs to be fixed.
This is the most stupid decision in COD history. To have players be forced to play a single game and ruin the fun out of the whole console is ridiculous! There was no notice before buying the game that it would eventually accumulate to over 200 GB! All the other COD games never had this issue and no game in general should ever have to go to such lengths. To constantly build on a game like this is just making excuses for the trash they didn't fix before hand. This new MW and the team behind it is doing a horrible job being honest with the players and leading to this game being a total rip off for console players. 1. This is the only game you can have on your system 2. They will not detail all the patch notes (better find them out for yourself) 3. It will take ALL DAY to install the game (not including another ALL DAY Patch) 4. Same COD concept, except bigger storage requirements.
My advice for console players, just reinstall the game or buy an external hardrive (yes it'll take all day still) and just download what you'll primarily play, for example if you love warzone and multiplayer just download the 2 multiplayer packs. spec ops and campaign are fun, but once you're done with them, you're done with them.
I have 50GB free and it won’t update. This game’s file size is a joke
@gameiznotover looking at COD: MW on my storage. It's at 188.3 GB and I have the disc copy... These updates are beyond ridiculous and I only installed it to confirm the space. I'm done with this garbage. RDR 2 wasn't even this huge and it's a massive open world map with hundreds of hours of content. Activision actually promised the update sizes would stop being so massive. Another lie stacked on the pile From AAA game makers. Just throw them in with EA and Bethesda. Don't trust anything they have to say
@Turismo4GT go buy a external hard drive and have your games install to that so you won't have to worry about running out of space for it. thats what i did as i was always having to find stuff to delete from my 500 gb ps4.
