Reviews are always a bit of a controversial topic, but there's no denying that Rockstar is one of the few developers that absolutely excels when it comes to critical opinion. So much so that in a newly published list from Metacritic, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto V share the top spot for the best-reviewed game on PlayStation 4.
The two gigantic, open world titles both sit at a rating of 97, coming in the third and fourth positions overall when the entire industry is taken into account. However, the two games above it, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, also sit just three points off a perfect 100. Therefore, we're not entirely sure how the website has come to the conclusion that the two Nintendo experiences sit above Rockstar's efforts in this ranking.
Nevertheless, the PlayStation 3's Mass Effect 2 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim share the impressive rating of 96, while The Last of Us, Red Dead Redemption, and Portal 2 form the backend of the top 10 with ratings just a single point fewer. We're also inclined to agree with the two top spots as well. Push Square awarded Red Dead Redemption 2 a rare 10/10 upon its launch last year, while Grand Theft Auto V came in at a 9/10.

The playstation exclusives absolute dominate. Oh hang on.
Biased gaming media. It’s a fix. Especially the mentioned 97 farce! (It’s worked out on % of higher scores but let’s not facts get in the way hey)
We should march at this injustice
Goes to show that game critics are not to be trusted. Both GTAV and Red Dead 2 are nowhere near the best games of the last decades.
What's in a score?
The games above them probably have a few more reviews giving perfect ratings, even if they weren't enough to move the overall percentage.
It's a pity BotW had to come down from that ridiculous 98 on metacritic, though.
@PressR2 That's very much a matter of opinion. What isn't is that GTA V, in particular, is not only the most well-reviewed PS4 game (alongside RDR2, at least), but also its best-selling one (and the best-selling video game of all time). Not bad for a last-gen port.
Skyrim without question is one of the best games of the last decade as is the first Red Dead Redemption and Mario Galaxy 2, I've played so many great games over the last decade on various platforms it's so hard to create a top 10. Horizon Zero Dawn would be up there as would Resident Evil 7 and 2, oh and Yakuza 0, also Death Stranding is fast becoming one of my favourite games. Nah its making my head hurt just trying to remember all the games I've played in that time but there has been a lot of very good games
BotW, Skyrim, TloU and ME2 rank higher than RockStars offerings for me. Id have GoW, H:ZD and Spidey above them as well for AAA games.
A brilliant decade tbh. As much as Skyrim hurts my brain given how atrociously it’s coded, I still love it and it’s easily one of the best games this decade. I’d say RDR2 is probably the best AAA PS game but Edith Finch, The Witness, Hollow Knight, Celeste etc are probably the best indies. In terms of personal playtime on games this decade, I’ve played Civilisation V, Binding of Isaac Rebirth and Smash Wii U the most so would rate them highly too. For once, I think PS beat Ninty this decade, while I love Galaxy 2 and Odyssey, there just weren’t the level of exclusives they had last decade such as Metroid Prime and the two Zeldas.
Rockstar are the kings of the open world genre. Even if you dislike their games, you can't deny that their attention to detail in them is phenomenal.
Gta 5 is the legendary. G.o.a.t games ever.i l💖ve this game.word ☝ up son
Push Square is in the Death stranding trailer on P.S. Store.
I've yet to play RDR2, going to start it this weekend probably but one thing I'll never understand is why R* get a pass for the utterly abysmal character controls in every game they make.
They create incredible worlds, great characters and tell brilliant stories but those controls are always piss poor and I'm expecting RDR2 will be no different. Reviews should reflect this and score accordingly, there's no excuse for it but R* get a pass every single time.
I agree with some on the list but some games got really overrated like BotW and RDR2 and other underrated like The Last of Us and God of War this games should be topping the list alongside Super Mario Galaxy 2 and GTAV
RDR2 had an amazing world and did lots of things very well but damn was I bored playing it! Agree with GTA5, BotW and the others though...
Of course they are.
I dont see the appeal of those two games at all, I tried both, just not for me. I liked the PS2 era GTA games though.
Well deserved if you ask me.
Good to see Portal 2 up there
So, i'm probably the only one who hasn't touched gta5 here. It just seems too violent and sadistic for my taste. Is it really a game a man in it's thirties can enjoy? I loved La Noire, stopped playing Red Dead.
Red Dead 1 and Mario Galaxy 2 are pretty tied for me honestly. Those are some of the finest games ever made. I liked BOTW and GTA5 a whole heck of a lot, but some personal issues I have with both kinda make me like them less than their metacritic would suggest. I also do not like Read Dead 2 at all but that's just me.
My favorite GTA is still San Andreas.
Interesting part on that list for me is PS3's Street Fighter IV. The game is so much better on the 360.
Pleased to see Persona games up on there.
Eye of the Beholder and all that.
I had GTA V on PS3 and it bored the pants off me. I've never bought a Red Dead game because cowboys have the same effect.
Vice City was the best GTA game. The last Rockstar game I really enjoyed was L.A. Noire. When it comes to games, in more recent times I see the company as a bit of a one-trick pony. They need to try something different.
Not sure how tbh. I played RDR for the first time in 2016, and imo it's one of the most overrated games I've ever played.
And while I liked Skyrim, it's too flawed to have that high of a rating.
However, TLOU and Super Mario Galaxy are two of the best games I've ever played.
@Paranoimia I have the same problem RDR too boring too finish and GTA does nothing for me. But that i dont like them is my thing. I think the Last of Us is miles ahead i loved that game with good controls. Somehow RDR got a 10/10 but the controls were bad. I saw that with a lot of reviews how can a game get a 10/10 with bad controls. 🤔
That's incredibly sad. Two of the worst games ever made from the worst developers out there getting such high scores. Just goes to show that there aren't that many gamers out there. No gamer who has played a R* title will tell you it's good, and any 'gamer' who does is an opinion you can safely ignore.
@PressR2 Nothing but facts
That list is ridiculously off.
Sleeping Dogs > GTA V
When it comes to open world games, Rockstar just has it down pact. There are plenty of fun open world games that come out from other companies, but R* has the team with passion, time, and budget to excel and push the genre again and again when after San Andreas in 2005, I didn't think was possible.
Where is the Witcher?
