There were rumours earlier this week that Sony was looking to offload television streaming service PlayStation Vue, but it seems the company couldn’t find a buyer, as it’s preparing to sunset the project on 30th January next year. According to Deputy President John Kodera, the organisation has “decided to remain focused on our core gaming business”.
“We are very proud of what PS Vue was able to accomplish,” he said. “We had ambitious goals for how our service could change how people watch TV, showcasing PlayStation’s ability to innovate in a brand-new category within the Pay TV industry. We want to thank all of our customers, some of whom have been with us since PS Vue’s launch in 2015.”
He continued: “PlayStation fans can continue to access movie and TV content through the PlayStation Store on PS4 and via our partnerships with top entertainment apps. We will continue to deliver the best entertainment experiences across the network, along with other key gaming services, including PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus.”
Kodera was quite candid about PS Vue’s shortcomings and failings: “Unfortunately, the highly competitive Pay TV industry, with expensive content and network deals, has been slower to change than we expected.” The organisation did attempt to keep the initiative alive by raising prices, but despite some neat simultaneous viewing features, it ultimately wasn’t able to turn a profit.

meh it never came to the UK anyway so no big loss for us
Ah well, was a decent enough service. If it helps their bottom line that's a good thing, loads of other options nowadays anyway.
Ah, so one less icon on the PS4 dashboard then. Fair enough. I wonder how PlayStation Productions will be affected (if at all) by PS Vue's shuttering.
@Turismo4GT Probably won't hurt them at all. Think about how "Powers" in the PS4 era and "The Tester" in the PS3 era was released. I have no doubt that PS Productions would be released the same way.
Good, just stick to gaming and don't take your fans for granted.
Meh Sling is a better deal anyway
January 30 carries me through the college football playoffs, where I would have canceled until next season.
what idiot would pay for the garbage that is ps vue, good riddance, a waste of space, don't have to worry about some other useless app on the PlayStation dashboard
PSNow is next.
@GodGamer Not likely since it's a part of their core gaming business. They made some nice changes that will likely lure in more subscribers. Vue on the other hand, just wasn't getting off the ground and it makes sense to end it now than lose more money on it. I am using it now and I love it, and it's a shame to see it go.
just do a streaming service like netflix, amazon etc since sony has 1000+ movies owned, imagine sony pulling their movies out of the competitors, and the new playstation productions can help on original content
@InsertUsername It will fail tonmake profit too. Hand helds were apart of their core gaming experience as was PSTV and we saw what happened.
@GodGamer Handhelds were an afterthought for Sony. Vita's only real issue was expensive memory cards and lack of support from Sony themselves. Leaving the handheld market entirely was the right move going forward. Their core gaming experience has always been home consoles. PS Now as it stands, will certainly make a turn around now that Sony is putting more serious focus on that and less on things that were risky endeavors, such as Vue. You are entitled to your opinion, and that's as far as I go with the topic. Good day.
@InsertUsername And PSNow will never make a profit.
