Despite his central position within The Last of Us, serving as the player character for the first game, we’ve seen almost nothing of Joel in the build-up to the sequel. We heard his voice in the reveal for The Last of Us: Part II, and he made a fleeting appearance in the latest trailer, but that’s kind of it so far. However, it seems the father figure will indeed be more involved within the game itself.
In an interview with IGN, Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann is asked about the state of Joel and Ellie’s relationship in the upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive. He explains that their relationship is “strained”, partly because “teenagers will be teenagers” and partly because of the events of the first game. Druckmann goes on to say that a key component of The Last of Us is “about this duo and their dynamic”, before confirming that Joel “plays a major part of this game”.
Obviously, this doesn’t tell us much, but it at least should alleviate fears that Joel will be largely skipped over in The Last of Us: Part II. Ellie is taking centre stage this time, but her adoptive father is set to be a key part of the sequel. Are you excited for more Joel? Don’t do this on your own in the comments below.

One less thing for ppl to worry about lol
Besides Brexit not looking like it's happening the Impeachment of the President of The United States of America and the Silence on the Playstaition 4 "Wild" I will sleep soundly in my bed tonight safe in the Knowledge that Joel Will Play a 'Major Part' in The Last of Us 2.
It doesn't need Joel to be a good game
Good because t'would be a missed opportunity to show off Joel's finely groomed greying beard.
I'm very impressed with all manner of beards in games nowadays, they've come on a treat. Yes, yes, indeed.
I've been quite surprised how many people online have been thinking Joel is already dead and is a figment of Ellie's mind in the game. Easy Allies had a good video with their impressions from playing and apparently that scene with Joel grabbing Ellie takes place at the end of the bit with Ellie crawling in the grass in Seattle.
they try to wheel us in now after that embarrassing barn scene. they should have thought about that earlier. here is a tip for naughty dog, let the player decide what their playable character should be with choices in the game. dont force feed your own politic agendas down people throats. then more people will buy your game. its to late now, enjoy your go woke go broke moment.
Of course he is.joel is the better protagonist.he made the last of us legendary.so we will play as him.word up son
@playstation1995 Ellie is better.
🤗
@LN78 I was baffled about that one.
Did we - and by we I mean the fine folks at Pushsquare - decide that Joel was a ghost at the end of the 1st trailer way back when - so by major part that part is just going to be Joel's ghost following you around saying "Use the Force Ellie" or some such?
Quick, somebody photoshop Joel in here.
@TheBuzz
I disagree.
I think its great that some authors push what they believe in or what they feel needs to be said etc. Be it in literature, cinema,..or video games.
I think you are wrong just like people who blame gamers for not buying the game are also wrong.
I'm not interested in the story from what I understand of it now. No need to blame them just like there's no need to blame people for not being interested.
Also, Joel could be playable as a memory flashback level.
I'm in tears just by thinking and writing about it now..
You got to love when fans try to tell devoplers how they should make their game.
Joel looks old in a weird way. Like someone took young Joel and used an aging filter to make him look older. That's not just me, right?
By the way, Ellie kinda looks like a stretched version of her 12-year-old self. But maybe I'm just used to what they look like in the first game.
@Octane
I thought Ellie looked great in the psx reveal.
It's too clichéd and obvious that they will kill the father figure. Revenge never ends well, this is a revenge game, I have a feeling Ellie will die as a result. Joel will lose 2 daughters.
@Hylian-Likely killing Joel is wayyy too obvious. They'll probably surprise everyone and kill Ellie. Revenge never ends well
@Hylian-Likely That theory is most likely incorrect.
It is known now that the demo that media outlets got to play behind closed doors showed that the scene in which Ellie and Joel reunite in the game takes place in a further chapter of the game than the incident in which we hear a gunshot and leads to Ellie wanting revenge.
@TheBuzz What's the agenda? Intrigued.
@TheBuzz what embarrassing scene?
Joel is dead in the Last of Us Part II and he is in her head throughout the campaign.
@ZeD I'll be more than happy to make a bet with you.
