One thing we can be confident of: Days Gone has awesome menus. We haven’t waxed lyrical about a title’s user interface since the hazy days of Persona 5, but Sony Bend’s upcoming open world survival horror does have a pretty nifty pause screen. You can bring it up by pushing the touchpad or by swiping in one of four directions, each corresponding to a different component.
Much like Horizon: Zero Dawn, the menus run at 60 frames-per-second, so everything feels slick and smooth. You can obviously browse the map, but there’s also a storyline segment which keeps track of the title’s various plot threads, as well as the obligatory skill tree and a section for your inventory, where you can keep tabs on various items that you’ve gathered while out and about.
It’s all lovingly put together, with neat transitions between tabs, and little flourishes that feed into the overall style of the game. Obviously the menus all come secondary to the core gameplay loop and storyline, but the UI is just another example of how much love and care has been invested into this project. It really does feel extremely polished.

Sammy - how does the map compare to Horizon: Zero Dawn? Bigger? About the same?
Flashy indeed. I like the look of it! Seems like you didn't get to show the inventory?
I wasn't a big fan of the inventory in Horizon, because it was sometimes difficult to find the item you need. And with a flashy menu like this, I hope the items are easy to find.
Yea that's awesome. Seems nice to use and hopefully easy to read unlike some other games.
Gravy on some already delicious potatoes? Yes please!
@Zombie9ers Not sure, we only got to play three hours, which is a huge chunk of time — but obviously not enough to see everything.
Days gone is going to be the most criminally underplayed first party game of all time. For some reason people keep talking about it being not original enough. Just out of curiosity, how many. REALLY original games have you played this generation
@get2sammyb
Is it me, or is Days Gone getting the Horizon Zero Dawn preview treatment? Most sites I've seen are calling it better than expected, with surprising character development (for 3-5 hours of gameplay), but still your generic open world with tropes borrowed from every other open world game, especially Far Cry.
The similarities have me cautiously optimistic!
@lacerz I don't think it'll be as good as Horizon: Zero Dawn, that's a very high bar! But you're absolutely right: I can only speak for myself, but I felt the game was exactly what I expected, but also better than I expected. If that makes sense!
@get2sammyb thats good to hear. Most of the previews I’ve read on resetera OT have been real positive so I can see this reviewing pretty well. I’m going to go with a prediction of 80 to 85 on metacritic
Great to hear Sammy, both on the menus and game it self.
@lacerz Yea, I can see that, I guess it kind of does work in your favor sometimes when people are skeptical but are then surprised compared to people being over hyped and then getting let down like quite a few AAA releases this gen.
@get2sammyb I think the reason people are saying better than expected is that they have been just comparing it to the last of us. I get the game has been in development for a while but Sony is firing on all cylinders, and after Drive Club, if the game was bad I really think Sony would have cancelled the project a while ago. They aren’t Square Enix
@jly1987 off the top of my head erm
Statik
Witness
Gone Home
Rogue Legacy
Super Time Force
Videoball
Rocket League
Fez
Arkham VR
Astrobot
Arms
FTL
I think the demo they showcased last year when he just ran around in circles gave a really bad impression of the game. Was it a ruse I wonder? Sony will hopefully now blast us with the GOTY.
@themcnoisy you just named a bunch of games that ARE NOT developed by Sony internal studios. Not really sure what you’re trying to prove here
@jly1987 you asked
'Just out of curiosity, how many. REALLY original games have you played this generation'
Not sure why you asked a question, recieved an answer and wonder what the hell just happened.
I like 60 fps menu like horizon zd, it's kind of annoying if the games menu lag a bit like spider-man. I hope sony update all their 1st party games on ps5 so it has 60 fps on gameplay too
@themcnoisy my mistake. I thought you replied to my other comment about how with Sony’s 1st party track record I see no cause for concern
@lacerz If its like Horizon Zero Dawn om in. 😁
wow, the more I see about this the more impressed I am, definitely going to be picking this up shortly after launch.
