Looks like Kratos may need to invest in a new trophy cabinet, because hot on the heels of last week’s The Game Awards 2018 win, God of War has now topped the Push Square forum’s Game of the Year poll. As brilliantly organised by community member KratosMD [Coincidental username connection, we’re sure – Ed], readers have spent the past week or so voting for their favourite games, with Sony Santa Monica’s epic Norse revival taking the top spot.
The Ghost of Sparta was flanked by Marvel’s Spider-Man and Arthur Morgan from Red Dead Redemption 2, while Detroit: Become Human and Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age rounded out the remainder of the top five. Here’s the full list:
- God of War
- Marvel's Spider-Man
- Red Dead Redemption 2
- Detroit: Become Human
- Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age
- Assassin's Creed Odyssey
- Shadow of the Colossus
- Astro Bot Rescue Mission
- Monster Hunter: World
- Spyro: Reignited Trilogy
Don’t think this is the end of Game of the Year on Push Square, though, because we’ve been busy beavering away on a bunch of Christmas content, including our official top ten. Articles will start rolling out next week, so make sure you keep it locked over the break. For now, let us know what you think of the forum’s picks in the comments section.

god of masterpiece. game of the year .game of the generations.kratos is the best word life .word to your mother.word up son.
This is pretty much a PlayStation site so I’m not surprised that a PlayStation exclusive wins.
Pretty good Top 10 list.
Also, 'eeyyyy I see Spyro Reignited at #10.
Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn was robbed
That's a pretty solid list, nice to see Dragon Quest appreciated.
The bias is real lol,
Thanks for giving the community and @KratosMD the shout Sammy. Was the decider in single digits or a landslide?
God of War rightfully deserves that No.1 spot. Red Dead is just a chore to play and that isn't a good thing to say about any game.
@youreyesonly00 You created an account just to whine about bias?
And nobody thought to put yakuza 6 at the top of the list. Never fear, it remains my goty.
@OmegaYato God of War won because it's an amazing game and a great evolution to the franchise not because it's an PS exclusive or some kind of bias like you think and
What's your GOTY anyway?
@youreyesonly00 Bias on the lack of Yakuza 6 Yeah I know
@BowTiesAreCool yeah I would be interested to see how the votes were spread. Overall the list just shows it has been a pretty amazing year for games, can 2019 beat it?
Push Square game of the year will be Journey again
@BearsEatBeets Click on the link to the thread at the bottom of the article. A pretty convincing win for God of War!
That's an excellent top 10! Detroit at #4 & Astro Bot as the top VR representative is thoroughly deserved.
We demand single player games!
@OmegaYato are the game awards a playstation site?
@Thrillho cheers, I thought it might be closer but it clearly wasn’t. Although the bottom half of the top ten was pretty close.
God of War deserves every piece of acclaim that is lavished upon it. A truly stunning game which took a tired concept and refreshed it, whilst still remaining true to its roots. Well done SM studio!
Says everything about how good PSVR has been this year that a VR game made the top 10.
Another win for God of War, that’s great. Also is my GOTY.
From the top ten list, I only didn’t play Astro Bot, because I don’t have a PSVR, and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
Edit: Great to see Spider-Man in second, I also loved the game.
Another win for single-player games! Maybe Xbox doesn't want them, EA, but here on PlayStation, we do. Glad to see God of War take the top spot.
@NintendoFan4Lyf
If you havent played any of the top 4 yet and have a ps4 then your doing gaming wrong man!
(Friendly note)
@OmegaYato
Not fair!
Put it that way: Im not surprised an excellent Goty contender that happens to be a ps exclusive wins. It would indeed be a surprise if GOW won goty on an xbox site.
Got to say I vote RDR2
Played 5 out of ten and did a downloaded MHW trial last night but only got to camp before going to bed!
Nice results. Although I think Astrobot deserves to be higher. It's amazing. And I think VR being a relatively small user base is the only thing holding it back from more success. Well that and the terrible name.
The voters sure do have good tastes. I've only played two games from this list (Shadow of the Colossus and Monster Hunter World), but I do want to get around to playing most of the others.
@RedMageLanakyn
I think we ll have to wait for the PS5 remastered version to see it Goty again.
Great list, everyone!
Of course its bias and voted based on games people owned and played rather than having any real considered merit - but that's why its the Forum Game of the Year opinion - results based purely on the games PushSquare Forumites played and then considered to be their best games of 2018. It was never going to be a 'fair' or balanced opinion because the people voting didn't play every game this year, didn't look at things necessarily from a purely critical perspective and vote accordingly but voted for what their favourite games of 2018 were - that's the way its always been and will no doubt continue to be!!
Nothing wrong in that...
all the games i voted for (3) are in the top 10.
if i never play another assassin's creed game again it'll be too soon, and RDR2 is my idea of gaming hell. haven't taken a punt on spiderman, largely because i can't stand the character.. any portrayal of him always seem to have the personality of an annoying 12-year old, and i don't think i could sit through 20 hours of that. it was one of the main reasons i couldn't play infamous second son any longer, i'd simply had enough of delsin i couldn't take anymore.
@ShogunRok like to thank you guys for your appreciation of dragon quest 11the review and its place in the top 50. Glad the community appreciates it. I have not played Spiderman or assassins creed I am sure they are good games, but I don't think they would stop Dragon Quest 11 from being my game of the year 😊
Edit : also glad you guys mentioned the dq theme as soon as I saw the article I was on the Playstation so fast minutes later new theme 😊
I reckon God of War will make a clean sweep and win the Push Square posse's game of the year, too. But I would love RDR2 to get the nod.
@GKO900 I never said it’s bias, so why are you getting so defensive? the whole site is PlayStation based so it shouldn’t surprise anyone that a PS exclusive wins. GoW wasn’t amazing to me.
@ellsworth004 No.
@PSfan4Life22 100% agree, I gave up in Chapter 4. Whereas I have just went back to do the Spider-Man DLC & it is a complete joy just to travel round the city. It's kind of making me wish we coulda got a bit of story DLC for game of the generation God of War. Mind you no DLC probably means we will have a shorter wait for the sequel
Great work Kratos (both). I need to play GoW, Spider-Man, Detroit and AC. For the time being, i’m balls deep in Zelda BOTW, which I really like. RDR2 is horseshit.
I can't stop playing god of war until I finish it, and the game has the best combat system of 3D action games ever, holding R2 button to heavy attack is the most satisfying feeling ever in 3D action games I think, whatever the situation in combat, the moment atreus jump on enemy holding it back, I run to that enemy to R2 it to oblivion, I was like "good boy atreus" 😂
@BAMozzy
I agree. It's very different than trying to be critically objective which is already almost impossible. That's why I think voting for official game awards was wrong although they pushed it a bit far with voting every 24hours crap.
Yeah, a great game won, the award is clearly biased. /s
Some people here, lmao.
Can't believe Spiderman didn't make number 1. Gutted.
@OmegaYato whaaaat? You didn't like God of War?! Burnnnnn himmmmmmmm!!
That's just how it goes round here, man. I didn't really like it either, in fact I got bored and I'm not sure if I even have it anymore. But clearly people enjoyed it so it was probably a great game.
@PSfan4Life22 couldn't agree more. Imo it wouldn't even make my top 10.
My choice for game of the year in a year where we are lucky to have had quite a few outstanding games
@JJ2 I have no issue with the results of these polls, I have participated for years and accept that people will only vote on the games they played. Its more a 'popularity' poll than a vote for the 'best' game based on any rationale but you cannot expect people to be 'critical' and have an objective opinion on something they haven't experienced. The top 10 isn't really a surprise - maybe Dragon Quest as I didn't think that had sold well enough for many people to have voted for it - Astro Bot too but maybe these made it because those that did vote on these gave them much higher scores. The higher scores adding up to more than a lot more votes of lower scores.
I do think that critic Awards should not include ANY public vote at all - not unless they have a separate award for the 'public' choice - A critics game of the year and a public voted GotY but not combine them at all. Its not a popularity poll where games could win just because its been out longer and more people have finished it, more people bought it because it's a AAA game or on a more popular system (or lose for the opposite reasons). Its difficult enough coming up with the 'best' game as they vary so much - not just in genre, but game-play, art-style, story, innovation etc and to compare a game like Overwatch and Uncharted 4 (as we had in 2016) which are vastly different games isn't easy. Critics are supposed to be objective so may well be best placed to assess each on its merits and decide which is objectively better where as the public may just vote on which one they played...
@playstation1995 Horizon God of war😄. That's actually what it reminds me of. I just got it on a black Friday sale for $17. I'm enjoying it but my goty is MHW word to your mother.
@kyleforrester87 it’s not that I didn’t like it. When it won best game direction I was pleased because it definitely deserved it, but I’ve played many action-adventure games & GoW wasn’t what everyone made it out to be. All I’m saying on here is that I’m not surprised a PS exclusive won on a PlayStation site, but people are making it like I don’t agree.
@OGGamer Frostborne hype
This is obviously a total fix,I mean seriously why is Dragon Quest XI only in fifth place???
Just Kidding,great results,at least all my favourite games are in the top ten
“God of War” is the most polished of the top three games and I had a great time playing it, but I think “Red Dead Redemption 2” will have more staying power (for me, at least.) I’ve felt little desire to go back and play the former, while I’m still playing RDR2 two weeks after beating it just for the sheer enjoyment of hanging out in that world.
With that said, they’re both fantastic games, and you can’t go wrong with either.
…And I really need to play “Astro Bot.” I bought it on release day after reading the raves, but I haven’t even opened the case yet. So much to play, so little time...
@Sondheimist strange as I feel exactly the same but just the other way round. Couldn't wait to get rid of red dead after completing. I don't want to see another horse for very long time 😂
Really undeserving but alright.
I don’t think God of War is game of the generation in any way. People who go that far probably haven’t played many action-adventure games.
Glad to see God of War win the prize. On another note, I think Spider-Man is vastly overrated. Let me explain. Is it a bad game? No, not at all, but it doesn't do much in terms of making it a "Game of the Year" contender. I went into the game with no expectations and I thoroughly enjoyed it — even acquiring the Platinum trophy.
However, as I think back on the game, all I seem to think about is that it only excelled in actually making you feel like Spider-Man (this includes combat, movement, and the personality), and that's it. Yes, the story was solid, but everything else? No. There wasn't much to explore. The map didn't seem that big. The combat was fun, but it got very repetitive and grindy, especially if you were going for the Platinum trophy.
The boss fights were underwhelming (minor spoilers), and when you found the way to beat the boss, it always revolved around the same animation 3 or 4 times. That's one of my biggest issues, actually. Over and over, it's the same animation — there's hardly any variation, even in regular oriented combat. The sidequests? Bland. Sure, you're being the "friendly neighborhood Spiderman," but none of them were unique or memorable. Car chases? Let's do the same animation over and over. Stop a burglary in a shop? Same animation over and over.
Now, on the (rare) occasion that you did walk around on the ground (if you decided to take a break from running and swinging), random citizens always said the same thing. All the people looked the same. There wasn't much to do in terms of that. Let's also not forget the moments where you're playing as MJ and Miles. Those sections only lasted for a few minutes, and while they did evolve the development of those characters, they were just boring to play. The only time it was interesting was (spoiler) when MJ was at Osborn's home.
In my opinion, I think Spider-Man would have benefited from adapting sidequests/substories from the Yakuza franchise, because they are typically innocent in nature but very unique and downright fun. Overall, the game is good, maybe great, but nothing special.
So happy this game did so well Definitely deserved GOTY
God of War and Red Dead 2 are on my shelf queued in my backlog and I've really been enjoying my experience with Spider-Man!
Dear Santa, can I please have more hours in the day to overcome my ever growing backlog of amazing games?
@playstation1995 Generation? Lmao you must not play many games
@OmegaYato I been playing more games than you dog.been playing since 1981.word up son
@playstation1995 Probably not enough action-adventure then. Also, the “ive been playing games since the 80s” thing is used to much, it’s a common lie.
@OmegaYato nope I play all the action adventure game and God of war is the best.word up son

GoW is my favorite game of all time. Never thought I would see RE1, WC3, or Witcher 3 dethroned, but it did it.
