Sony's stance on cross-platform play has changed. The Japanese giant confirmed that it was working to enable cross-play on PlayStation 4 back in September, and the statement came alongside Fortnite's cross-play beta, which is ongoing.
Many thought this would open the cross-play floodgates, but things have been quiet since. The reasoning behind this is that Sony is using the aforementioned beta to test the waters -- it's said that more games will follow.
It's important to note all of that because free-to-play hits SMITE and Paladins are getting cross-play support in January next year -- support that doesn't include the PS4 versions of each game. "Cross-play will be supported across PC launcher, PC and Mac Steam, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. We are technically ready to support cross-play on other platforms as the opportunity arises," developer Hi-Rez Studios' official site reads.
Again, it sounds as though cross-play functionality for SMITE and Paladins will arrive on PS4 eventually -- the stage just isn't quite set yet.

or it's just that this was never a serious feature that devs wanted exept for some smaller games and was just overblown by the usual suspects.
@jdv95 Definitely an element of that too, but Sony did say that more games would join Fortnite eventually. I think it's just making sure everything works as intended before allowing everyone else in.
So....will these companies catch flak like Sony? Oh that's right, it was never that big of an issue to begin with.
@Cutmastavictory Considering the fact that Microsoft caused the over the top backlash to Sony for this gen and cross-play. Many forget that Sony was fine with it on PS3 with Portal etc and MS wanted nothing to do with it now it's the other way round and MS have lossed badly in this gens so called war and needed a dig to start something.
Your right though cross play wasn't needed and Sony could have added it as a perm feature next gen
But people told me it's as easy as flicking the switch
well isn't it still in beta on the PS4 right now, so this kind of news isn't unexpected
@Cutmastavictory well the Cross Progression w Fortnite that was the real issue
@wiiware idk but Nintendo is known for being inept when it comes to anything related to online play and even they seemed to have no trouble "flicking the switch"
@Derpie1 that's what really set it all off honestly, I didn't really care much about crossplay until I got locked out of all my fortnite progress for even daring to play on PS4
@CapitanBarbar0ja yeah that’s what really mattered if Sony just allowed Cross Progression and heck if they wanted to be anti-consumer... you gotta be a PS+ member to transfer.
@Derpie1 it really would have been that simple and all that controversy could have been avoided.
@CapitanBarbar0ja yep... that’s all people wanted
I’m actually a tad hurt about this. A great friend of mine plays Smite of Xbox and we've been wanting the crossplay to come around for a while. It finally happens and yet not really. Extra "this sucks" points since I told him earlier today we'd be good come January. Guess I gotta keep waiting.
