Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has stormed the the top of the Japanese software charts, shifting an impressive 229,000 copies on PlayStation 4. Immediate sales have bettered those of Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, and Call of Duty: WWII, making this a big win for Activision and Sony.
Aside from Black Ops 4's domination, there's not much else to talk about. Last week's number one, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, slipped to third, while Marvel's Spider-Man remains in the top ten, and is now closing in on 300,000 copies.
On the hardware side of things, PS4 Pro numbers received a nice boost thanks to the recent Japanese price cut, jumping to around 15,400 units -- a 13,000 unit increase.

Hmm, is this more evidence that the Pro will become the only PS4 SKU available soon?
@Turismo4GT It's usually the other way around, so I doubt it.
@Turismo4GT No
@JoeBlogs Fair point. However, Sony may be looking to cut their hardware manufacturing costs ahead of the PS5 introduction (whenever that is), so why not drop the base machine if you can bring the Pro to price parity with the standard version? Yes, software support will continue for the base model because it's got the majority install numbers, but with every new game now being showcased with Pro screenshots, Sony could be looking at making the Pro the default machine.
I still don't understand, why Japanese are so hyped about the Switch. Mine is collecting dust. But nice to see, that a PS4 game is on top.
I thought Mario Party was number 1 last week not AC Odyssey?
@Lando_ Why shouldn't they be?
Pro won't be on its own, wouldn't make any sense yet, but it will be interesting to see, with the price cut, what the Pro sells in relation to the standard model. Up to this point seems to sit at about 50% of the standard PS4 barring any special editions.
@Lando_ funny how things are ain't it. I can well understand why they are 'hyped', barely a day has gone by since launch when I haven't used my Switch whereas my PS4 has been a bit of a dust collector for prolonged periods!
@toffeecrit Funny indeed, my Switch is collecting dust since I finished Super Mario Odyssey, that was a long time ago. Meanwhile, PS4 is having amazing exclusives this year and the biggest multiplats too. ^^
@PS_Nation your point about the exclusives and multiplats is what? Japanese people shouldn't be hyped about Switch because of what it doesn't offer as opposed to what it does? It is pretty insular of Mr. Calrissian to say 'i still don't understand' because this is how it is with me, therefore it should be the same for everyone else. I am merely providing a counterpoint that it is different for me, or for anyone potentially.
@toffeecrit @Slasher Okay. I played Zelda, Mario and Xenoblade; and found the games to be pretty meh. Then, my Switch became a dust magnet. Octopath didn't convince me to buy the full game - I played both demos. I preferred Persona 5 over Xenobalde, Horizon over Zelda and Dragon Quest XI over Octopath. Even as a portable console, I found the Vita to be more comfortable. Perhaps Bayonetta 3 can make my Switch break out of its dust mantle again. ^^
@Lando_ all of what you say is 100% true, as your 'subjective' opinion. In my 'subjective' opinion I disagree with nearly everything you said, and that is the point I am making as I am sure that mirrors a good proportion of the Japanese public. To say you don't understand why they would still be hyped for the Switch based on your personal experience and feelings against Japanese gaming trends is a bit naive.
@toffeecrit
That is absolutely okay.
Certainly, the Switch hype in Nippon also has something to do with the hectic, hard-working everyday life of the Japanese. I guess, time does not allow them to sit for hours in front of a stationary console. Fortunately, I'm not in a similar situation, otherwise I would probably appreciate a technically strong, portable console more than the stationary PS4. So, at the end of the day, we all play what suits our taste and lifestyle best.
@Lando_ I lived in Tokyo for a year. The amount of 3DS's, Vita's, and Mobile devices I saw people using on the trains and out in public was staggering. That's a huge reason why Switch is so popular; it's portable. The library as well, which evidently sells very well, too.
@Jriibz woah there, this has nothing to do with 'console wars' and does not come from any 'toxicity' towards devices or brands, both me and Lando obviously own both PS4 & Switch and i know I very much enjoy both machines for the different things they offer. This could easily be about the Vita if someone said I don't understand how that machine is/was popular in Japan and flopped pretty much elsewhere. This is just a comment about Japanese gaming culture versus someones own personal experience, which I might add are allowed to be different.
@Lando_ 100% agree, well said.
