Konami has kind-of-sort-of explained the reason why Castlevania Requiem is releasing exclusively on PlayStation 4. For those who don't already know, the title bundles two remastered games together: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and Castlevania: Rondo of Blood. It was officially announced earlier today, but news of its PS4 exclusivity quickly led to a lot of this:
Look, we're kidding, obviously, but as mentioned, Konami has issued an explanation of sorts. In a press release, the publisher writes: "Relive the timeless classics like never before thanks to Konami's partnership with SIE Worldwide Studios to create these high-quality ports."
Going by that, it sounds like Castlevania Requiem may not even exist without Sony's input, and if that's the case, then the exclusivity makes way more sense.

SotN for PS1 classic then?
Also very bullish Robert
By the way the preorder has a 4 euro discount bonus retailing for 16 euros.
For some people, making sense out of exclusivity is impossible for them.
Doesn't change the fact that I'd rather have it on Switch 😂
@Zukato if you want to see how bad it can get you should go look up some of the Spider-Man posts, there was this one person who couldn't understand why a property Sony owns is exclusive to a Sony system
Haha, love the crying baby image. Shots fired!
Atleast they actually gave us a reason WHY is it exclusive, compared to what Microsoft treats its "console exclusives".
@Onion Yeah right? Made me laugh. Shots fired. xD
Soooo....no Vita port?! Guess I can always use remote play and start whippin' ghouls in the bedroom.
So basically Fans wanted SoTN. Sony heard it, SIE did all the heavylifting, SIE went to Konami to ask for Permission. Honestly KONAMI, just sell the rights of Castlevania to SIE WWS, SIE will surely make use of this IP if Konami sold it to them. It's been years since we had a proper castlevania game :/
@SoulsBourne128 Are you bashin' Play Anywhere? Personally, I LOOOOVE that feature and wish all games did it, since I HATE buying games twice for PC and for console.
@keihtg nah not the player anywhere shtick, but the whole "Oh look! an Xbox Exclusive, what? it's on PC too? why did I even buy a One X then?" situation that microsoft is doing rn
@Amplified They usually say "console exclusive" in the case.
Many people just like the convenience of a console, which is easy for any console gamer to understand. That's why they'd buy a One X.
So if the articles can have crybaby pics, does that mean we're allowed to start flame wars and fanboy arguments in the comments now?
@EVIL-C Fair point, I guess it's just Microsoft using its ecosystem to deliver their products, still buying a one X when you can experience the same game with better visuals and performance on a PC is something I'm having trouble accepting :/
@Amplified Ah, I gotcha. I actually bought an X1 a long time ago, and then literally the day it arrived in the mail, I found out that Killer Instinct was getting ported to PC and said, "Well, between that and Titanfall on PC, I might as well hold off!"
Now, however, I'm mostly on the go, so I ended up re-buying a number of my PS4 games on my laptop. I guess that's a pretty niche situation, but I at least appreciate the idea of buying a game only once....kinda like with THIS Castlevania game...I've already bought this collection on PSP and Vita (not to mention SOTN on PS3 too), so now I gotta re-buy it again to play on PS4? Boooo!!!
@Amplified "Play Anywhere" also has advantages in the way of the couch-factor (playing games in the living room on your console rather than at a desk on your PC) and wife/girlfriend/family factor (when they take over the TV or console and you have to retreat to your office PC), lol...
Every time a game like this is coming exclusively, the port beggars strike here the comments.
Hope they don’t harass the developers on social media like the pc crowd are doing with Rockstar.
@keihtg cheers mate, I can agree to that
@PS_Nation I'm not seeing any port beggars as of right now, and if SIE truly did all the heavy lifting then all they can do is complain to KONAMI as to why they let other Devs "port" the game for them
Rather than complain about how this isn't coming to anything but PS4, I'm more likely to complain that Konami hasn't just made a big Castlevania Collection yet like Capcom has done with Mega Man and Street Fighter. Get on that and stop being stupid, Konami.
I am glad this is coming though. Rondo of Blood is a bit difficult to get ahold of these days.
@Giygas_95 Konami doesn't want to spend money on game development anymore, but hey the spirit of Belmonts live on inside Pachinko machines, (this statement made me sad as I'm typing it *sigh)
Vita version? 😁
@Amplified I don't know a lot about game development, but I can't imagine a collection would be that expensive, and it would make them a fair deal of cash too. Throw some emulators and ROMs on a disc/cartridge (or go digital only to make it even cheaper), code up a simple menu to select the game, maybe include some bonus legacy material like the Mega Man X Legacy Collections did (though that would require extra work which they clearly aren't interested in putting in).
Oh well, at least Bloodstained is an up and coming franchise. Curse of the Moon is amazing. Here's hoping Ritual of the Night is too.
@Giygas_95 Its a mystery that only Konami knows the answer to
@Amplified I'm sure I greatly oversimplified it, but it's still a lot cheaper than making a brand new game. I wish they'd just sell Metal Gear and Castlevania to companies that care. Either Nintendo or Capcom (probably Capcom so they wouldn't go console exclusive). First thing Capcom would probably do is crank out collections.
@crimsontadpoles No.
@Giygas_95 Thats what I want them to do, just sell the IPs to those who actually care about the games
@Amplified That's fair to say as well regarding PC, but I'm sure one thing everyone can agree on is that consoles are less likely to have problems running a game. No drivers or compatibility issues to worry about, it all usually just works when you install and hit start.
@EVIL-C That, I can agree on
@PS_Nation to be fair to any 'port begging', on this occasion it made absolutely no sense to make it PS4 exclusive on Konami's part for so many reasons, so kudos to Sony for getting it done.
Second the comments regarding Konami IP's, sell em, licence them, whatever, there are too many I love/loved that for far to long get none from them.
I have Rondo of Blood on Wii and PSP, and SOTN on PS3 and Xbox One. So what's the big deal with this being exclusive?
@Bliquid Look, a port beggar. Because it's great every frickin time a game is exclusive to PS4, port beggars like you derail the entire thread and start a fanboy discussion /S. If you don't like my posts, click ignore and move on.
I love to see those beggars crying, lol
I just want to know if this is going to get a physical release anywhere
Can't wait to dive back into these amazing games
Konami is so lazy they couldn't even be bothered to port a twenty-year old game to modern consoles on their own? What the ****...
@crimsontadpoles
It was clearly a joke. Lighten up.
Situations like this show just how clueless modern-day Konami is. As others have mentioned, even if they don't want to make new games they could make a killing off collections of classic franchises. There are plenty of us who want to be able to get all the Castlevania or Contra games in one package.
@Zukato
some people just refuse to make sense of it because they don't want to buy a 2nd console (which is why there are exclusives).
And you have weak/smart (pick one) people like me who buy a Switch and a PS4 so they can complain about not being able to play 4K Zelda or on-the-go Spiderman.
I love to see those port beggars cry even on IGN the first comment it's a Switch owner port begging, honestly only the Nintendo fanboys are the port beggars crying all time for games, I guess they need to do the Switch to PS4 😂
@GKO900 Yeah, had the same thought. On every YouTube video with that topic, the first comment is someone port begging for the f@$#ing Switch. xD
@Lando_ I know everything for them needs to be on Switch because it's perfect for the console since it's portable, for real Nintendo fanboys are the worst not even the Xbots are that annoying and blind for a company
I agree. Fanboys in general are annoying but Nintendo's take the cake.
@keihtg Well, I was mostly referring to the console "launch" exclusives. Is hard to tell if they are actual exclusives or timed exclusives.
Meh I didn't even know people wanted this on Xbox/Switch etc.
'Going by that, it sounds like Castlevania Requiem may not even exist without Sony's input, and if that's the case, then the exclusivity makes way more sense.'
The Masterrace clan are immune to rudimentary logic like this though.
nice that's why ps4 is the best.word up son
@keihtg You mean for the NINE games that you can actually "play anywhere".....Even though their original statement during the announcement was ALL 1st party games would be playable and to this day its still only NINE.....
@waluigifan1 The fact that Rondo of Blood has never been available in the US until they put it on the garbage Wii Virtual Console...It was a Japan only game for decades the Wii Virtual Console doesn't exist anymore so the only people who have access to it are Wii owners that bought it.....
@keihtg or buy Dracula x Chronicles on PSN if you don't mind the trophies?
@__marc Dracula x Chronicles also includes the original version of Rondo of blood. It's an unlockables, but it's there, and much better than the remaks.
@JoeBlogs Sorry to disagree, but I own both - Xbox One X and PS4 Pro. The differences in games like Rise of the Tomb Raider and other "Xbox One X enhanced" games are very subtle, if you don't sit with a Digital Foundry magnifying glass in front of your TV. I'd still recommend the PS4 Pro to have the best variety of games available with Xbox One X level of graphics.
@Wraggadam I've got that game on PSN and in physical form (for PSP)...but I'm one of THOSE people who loves his trophies, lol.
@JoeBlogs Ah, okay. I agree. I also didn't want to badmouth the X. Like you say, it's very cheap compared to a PC with similar specs. There also are surely people who can spot differences between a Pro and an X, but I can not, unfortunately. :/ Even though I had a Pro I got an X too, simply because of Ori, Cuphead and ReCore. But I still play the Pro a lot more, due to the lack of exclusives on Microsoft's machine.
@DMG361132 True, I just want to see a new collection on all current consoles and PC. Switch too. I feel if the PS3 and 360 could run MGSV just fine, a Switch could too.
@DMG361132 Konami stopped being cool a long time ago so probably not.
@FullbringIchigo
What I know is that Sony owns the movie rights to Spider-Man and that's kind of it.
This case of exclusivity is the same as Castlevania; no one here is asking for God Of War or Ratchet and Clank on Xbox and Switch.
That said...
If the remastered collection is aiming to be - or more precisely, to stay - a Sony exclusive, the suspicious timing of it all suggests it's gonna be anything but.
Of course, no hard feelings at all - me not being a hardcore Castlevania fan helps - but I thought this timing was interesting enough to point out.
@AlexSora89 you know i REALLY am looking forward to that game
anyway it doesn't matter if it's only a timed exclusive but at this moment it IS exclusive so no matter how much people may moan or want it, that's not going to change
as for Spider-Man Sony own the Multimedia rights to it that includes JOINT rights to the games too, shared with Marvel, years ago they licensed those rights to Activision and once they ran out they came back to Sony and Marvel who at the very least got this game exclusive as part of the deal to bring Spider-Man to the MCU
it was a "we give you something so you give us something" deal
@DMG361132 at the very least they get a few games out of it
@FullbringIchigo
Marvel is now a subsidiary of Disney, though. Should they ever want some money from other consoles' owners, though, I doubt that will take them much time to figure the legal claptrap out.
As far as my (poor) legal knowledge goes, anyway.
@DMG361132
Watch the trailer I embedded in the link and be enlightened. For context, the game the trailer refers to is due for release this December. Connect the dots as you please.
Also, as I mentioned in my main comment, it's not like people are asking about Sony IPs - as in, actual Sony IPs - on other consoles; knowledge about certain IPs' owners is common knowledge by now. That said, I want you and @FullbringIchigo to know that I did applaud Sony for the deal they struck with Marvel; I'm not entirely biased.
@DMG361132 (comment #73)
Thing is, even in the age of the internet, there are people who are exposed to other franchises by seeing cameos. Given how Smash is famous for taking a common denominator approach and making the gameplay somehow "translate" to a moveset for every fighter in the roster, someone unfamiliar with Castlevania might play the game and be interested in the source material. As of now, the Castlevania series has yet to be introduced on Switch, and - NES via Switch Online Service aside - I'm pretty sure that any casual fan dipping into Castlevania content in Smash will start asking questions.
Of all exclusivity deals struck by Sony, this is the most suspicious one to me. I mean, the N. Sane Trilogy - despite Crash now being a third party property - could have stayed on PS4, and yet the exclusivity lasted just one year.
As you can tell, however, my fear of coming off as biased hails from me being a NintendoLife user. I've been a PlayStation guy in the PS1 era mainly, and as of now the Kingdom Hearts series is the only reason I own a PS2 and a PSP (with a dash of PSOne Classics in the latter's case). Once the GBA rolled around, with the Spyro and Crash GBA games, I got hooked on the handheld, and first-time exposure to Mario Kart and Super Mario World did the rest. That's my story in a nutshell.
@DMG361132 (comment #74)
I sense some timed exclusivity at work, even if that happened to last one year for every game from here on out (I guess that's not entirely implausible). I recall Song Of The Deep and Sunset Overdrive coming out on Xbox One, with the latter being an actual Xbox exclusive, so there's that. At this point I think Insomniac Games is less of a second-party and more of a third-party that just happens to strike many deals with Sony.
@DMG361132
Thing is, any development in the gaming industry is, dare I say, shifting. What's true, either as in actually true, said to be true or believed to be true (if not any combination or the latter two cases), can be false in a few months.
Obviously, if timed, I'm totally fine with this exclusive. Still, Sony built an enormous marketing campaign over Spider-Man so I doubt that we're seeing Spidey anywhere else anytime soon; however, while Sony funded Castlevania's PS4 development, it should be noted that it's still a port (the meaning of "remastered" got all kinds of blurry with the N. Sane Trilogy...) of an older game, and the announcement of the formerly PS-only Final Fantasy games for Xbox and Switch, the meaning of "historically PS1-only" got kind of thrown out of the window (not to mention that SotN is available on Xbox 360 as a standalone title).
Whatever exclusivity is there, I doubt it's gonna last longer than it needs to.
I don't like the idea of giving money to Konami, but if they put this collection on a disc, I will.
@DMG361132
I thought I was being reasonable, as trolling to me is something more like the second image in the article, but you do you.
Don't really think @AlexSora89 is trolling, he brings up a good point. It definitely looks like Sony is snatching up an exclusive, and honestly that's kinda what Sony's strategy has been as of late. Nothing really wrong with it either, it is what it is.
I think it's more the fact that Konami is looking to revive Castlevania in the same way Capcom may be looking to try and revive Mega Man. Simon and Richter being in Smash makes this the best possible time to start trying to milk the CV franchise and get some quick ports out to capitalize on the hype. I fully expect to see Castlevania games popping up on the Switch soon too, so I'd say both sides will get their equal Castlevania fix. For Nintendo, I expect we'll see CV 1-3 on the NES Online service.
Either way, it's a good time to be a CV fan. It looks like the franchise is starting to bubble back up to the surface and I couldn't be happier about it!
@Onion
Thanks for being the voice of reason. Being all "told you, crossplay is good for everyone" is definitely as far as my trolling goes, and it's more like playful teasing than anything else.
As for "snatching exclusives", it's the one side of exclusivity I'm not really a fan of, but this needs some elaboration for the sake of clarity. There are three kinds of exclusivity I respect:
1) exclusivity by IP possession: the one that's sacred to me. Nintendo has Mario and company, Xbox has Halo and company, Sony has God Of War and company. It's the way things are just supposed to be and that's perfectly fine.
2) exclusivity by IP purchase: which leads to point 1.
3) timed exclusivity: "play it first on" is a great compromise between striking an exclusivity deal, and stripping other players of a game. Eager gamers can buy the console if they feel the need to do so, while the patience for waiting is rewarded with ports elsewhere.
Then there are two kinds of exclusivity, one on the line between acceptable and annoying and the other far beyond it.
4) funded exclusivity: sad, but understandable, sometimes one of the three giants steps in, in order to make a game a reality. This is what happened with Bayonetta from the second game onwards, as its development has been funded by Nintendo; likewise, indie sensation Cuphead got some extra funding from Microsoft that granted the game Xbox exclusivity, and that appears to be the case with this Castlevania remaster. However...
5) third-party exclusivity by deal: the worst case of all, when a third-party IP is given exclusivity by a mere deal; especially aggravating - in my opinion - when a franchise has been seen on other consoles before (for example, what Rayman Legends almost became on Wii U, Rise Of The Tomb Raider on Xbox One, Street Fighter V on PlayStation, etc.). It's the one kind of exclusivity I can't stand, honestly.
I've always been of the opinion that the big three have to work on their own exclusives. That said, however, at least the "untouchable" PS1-era Final Fantasy games are finally starting to become available on other consoles. As long as everyone gets to play the games that are supposed to trascend systems, I'll be fine with deserved exclusivity. That's my stance on it, as controversial as it might be. Again, what happened with Crash Bandicoot is totally fine, as it is now a third-party IP. I'm not going to ask for Jak and Daxter to be playable with Joy-cons anytime soon if that's what's pissing people off in this thread.
Sorry - I mean it - for the long digression. Back to the reply, it's still a sign of goodwill on Konami's part. Konami and Capcom do seem to seek some kind of redemption after their public image having fallen so far in recent years, and Mega Man 11 is already making the rounds for its unexpectedly excellent quality; I'm more than confident that Castlevania Requiem will prove to be just as good, if a bit of an example of playing it safe given it's still a (couple of) port(s).
Which reminds me of another talking point, with added emphasis in order to make further replies focus on this rather than my previous rant: don't you all think the Kickstarter-funded spiritual successors (Mighty No. 9 and Bloodstained in this case) have served as a bit of a wake-up call for, respectively, Mega Man and Castlevania's original IP owners?
Chime in whenever you want to, I'm open to rebuttals.
@DMG361132 This is your second warning insult another user and calling people.trolls because they don't agree with you will get a ban from here so if I were you I would tred lightly. This is your final warning.
@AlexSora89 it may come to other systems but I doubt it since Sony put the money up for it. To me it would be like Street Fight V or Bayonetta 2 coming out on other consoles as.those franchise were fianced by Sony and Nintendo themselves. Yes Symphony of the Night did get a port to Xbox 360, and there was a Dreamcast version but that deal doesn't apply since it's new game. Technically though SotN is available on Xbox One through Backwards Compatibility.
@Tasuki
Interesting to see. I've been looking at the behind the scenes details for games only lately, and this is the first time I happen to see an HD remaster of two old games in a third party franchise that are tied to a console for some reasons, so I wanted to understand how much Sony financing the project would affect the whole exclusivity scenario.
@AlexSora89 Well technically Nintendo remastered Bayonetta and it's tied to the Wii U and Switch. As in the same deal with Castlevania Xbox Owners can play Bayonetta on Xbox One via Backwards Compatibility but it's not a remaster for the current get. Systems like Nintendo has so it's been done before.
@Lando_ @GKO900 Honestly, I find the Xbox elitists to be the worst out there. And I speak from a person who was a HUGE OG Xbox and Xbox 360 fan.
@Tasuki
Sorry for the late reply - I tend to be away from my PC from time to time, and I don't comment on NL/PS network's articles via phone.
That said, the Bayonetta example is true, but I can hardly count it as such given Bayo 1 was "barely last-gen" when the sequel was announced - I chalk my reasoning up to the Wii U being more or less around the PS3/X360's power.
Now the Switch port, on the other hand, fits your bill better.
