God of War’s guaranteed to look stunning on the standard PlayStation 4, but if you do happen to have a PS4 Pro – or you’re picking up that spiffing new limited edition – then you will have some options to choose how you want to play it. There’ll be a 4K option, of course, which will checkerboard to 2160p as previously confirmed. But there’ll also be a Performance mode for those of you who favour framerate over resolution.
It’s unlikely this will bump the framerate to 60 frames-per-second, but according to director Cory Barlog it “makes the game run so, so smooth”. We’ll be able to see the difference for ourselves when the title drops in under a month. Not long now, folks.

Does that mean the game doesn't run smoothly at 30fps? That should also be the case on the base PS4 too but then it could be like H:ZD where 'Performance' mode wasn't really necessary - just for those rare occasional 1-2 frames dropped...
"4K" 30fps locked for me thanks! Higher frame rate is awesome of course but only when it's locked down. Variable is pretty grim.
Seriously doubt a first party exclusive is going to have any noticeable performance issues but nice of them to include the option.
As a matter of fact, I am getting that limited edition system, so I'll actually be able to pick and choose! Very excited for everything involving this game. Wow.
I hate this feature in games to be honest! I always prioritize visuals, who cares if the frame drops 2 or 3 frames anyway?
But yeah I prefer when games come with one option only! But I guess it's a cool feature for most people
I'm one of those unfortunate people that immediately notices frame drops and it drives me insane. I'll try out both modes and see just how not "smooth" it is when it's at 2160.
Frame rate is king! Love how a game like Nioh gives me the option to play 60FPS on a base PS4.
I feel like 1080p 60 fps would be completely possible, but what do I know...That particular frame rate and resolution is the gold standard for me. I really don't care about 4K.
I always appreciate it when devs allow us these kind of options.
On the down side, it's always so tough to choose which one I want to use.
Can't have checkerboard and 60fps, that's reserved for the PS5 port, gotta leave the fans wanting more.
Choices are good, and I think this will be one of the big pushes at E3 as Sony tries to talk current PS4 owners into a Pro. Pro could be $299 this holiday, throw in a couple of games and you could get some upgraders as more and more people get 4k tvs. And really, if they announce a PS5 in 2019 it's going to be difficult at that point to talk people into splurging the big bucks on a Pro. This holiday should be the last big PS4 hurrah, after that it's the budget option for the next 4 or 5 years.
Performance every time for me . That's why I bought my Pro , yes the 4K is nice but the game actually playing smooth as butter with no issues is what I want .
Oh yeah the choice is yours playa.black sheep.or the world is yours nas or scarface.this game looks great already.word up son
I personally go for resolution on Horizon! It looks spectacular with HDR!!
I'm not ever upgrading to the Pro and this concerns me a bit. Better not mean performance is going to be trash on the peasant PS4.
@Gamer83 It won't be, this game's settings sound similar to Horizon.
@Gamer83 Yeah, some of the same thought echo through my head. I didn’t have access to Internet when I first heard more about the Pro, and I remember thinking of their would be exclusive Pro games. I was livid. Thankfully that hasn’t happened. I remember thinking it would be a bad idea for Sony, and it looks they don’t disagree so far.
@Jaz007
PS4 Pro was an idea I wasn't big on from the start, really just seems like a way for Sony to say 'we have 4K gaming too,' even if it isn't true 4K gaming. Next PlayStation I'm getting is the PS5, but in the meantime, at least the Pro hasn't upset things as much as I thought it could. Like you I was concerned, initially, about the possibility of Pro exclusives, doesn't seem like that will ever happen which is a good thing.
I've been saving for this pro bundle for a couple of weeks. Not a fan of the series but compared to the SW Battlefront pro bundle, i'd rather buy this one. Cant wait.
Performance over Visuals... you can tell I'm a Nintendo fan
I'll go with performance for the first playthrough and then switch to resolution on the second.
@eltomo It's true, Nintendo always has my respect in that regard. I mean...gawd forbid developers work within the constraints of the hardware!
@kyleforrester87 I find variable above like 45 frames is still pretty worth it, assuming you're getting close to 60 much of the time anyway.
With having my PS4 Pro running on my calibrated LGB6, without a doubt resolution mode it is.
I can't see the difference between performance and resolutions mode in horizon zero dawn, I hope gow ps4 at least have unlocked framerate like gow 3 on ps3. I think 40-50 fps like gow 3 is a nice compromise if gow ps4 can't reach 60 fps.
@Eman619 I have the B7 and still prefer frame rate over resolution.
@doctommaso To each his own 👍
Can't see Pro hitting 60, Cory Barlog would have said otherwise. I'll be very surprised and disappointed if there's performance issues. Sony don't tend to have those problems with their exclusives, Last Guardian seemed to be the only one, you might get the odd lost frame in certain areas but nothing game breaking. The recent previews didn't seem to bring up any problems and that was probably a January build at the absolute latest.
I dream of a day when all games are well beyond 60 fps at a smooth framepace regardless of the platform they're on, sadly that's a pipe dream because all devs cares about is "resolution" (said while imitating Jim Sterling's voice).
I do go for the performance mode in some games even when its around 45 fps but i just got a 4K TV so if it is 30 - 40 fps and not 60 ill just go with the 4K mode
@Cpt_Price That's a really neat idea, actually!
@malbhet I think we'll get 4K/60 with the PS5.
The wording does make it sound like performance isn't great on either base PS4 or in 4K mode, here's hoping it's just like that utterly pointless performance mode on Horizon. All the footage so far has looked fine so I'm assuming it's a line taken a bit out of context
For a racing game I want performance, but 30 fps still works well enough for me. I would never turn down game because of it.
In other genres I prioritize visuals over framerate, since the framerate has never been a serious issue for me when it comes to consoles. On PC on the other hand, it was constant concern, a constant gamble; 'will it run well on my particular system even though I supposedly meet the requirements?'.
@doctommaso I doubt it because CPUs are very expensive last I looked and the big publishers see high end graphics as more important because it's easier to sell a game on how amazing it looks then how smooth it runs.
So fake 4k at 30fps...or a performance mode on PS4 Pro at....what? 1080p 30fps solid?
If so, whats the FPS at fake 4k, if there is a mode specific for performance that ISNT 60fps?
And what about the base system? Are we looking at 900p/1080p with drops below 30fps?
Man the weak CPU is showing. Should be 1080p60 locked by now but nope, resolution comes first apparently.
@YummyHappyPills and we ain’t at the end of the res thing cus we both know they gonna push 5K/8K Res soon maybe even 10K/12K
Resolution, always the resolution.
@smelly_jr You can always try to push the limits of the console like the first party titles. The big hitters of Sony seem to try to get the best possible. 😊 😉
@YummyHappyPills You always look on the bright side of things. 😁 😋
Lets wait untill we get the numbers.
Sadly there is no such option readily available for the base PS4 but if there were, I'd pick FPS over Reso any day. The difference between 30 and 60 locked or unlocked is super noticeable (even without you trying, you'll still feel it) but for resolution, not so much...Unless you stop and smell the flowers.
This is all cool and all..
But I bought a PS4 for its better performance, for higher tier equipment.
I don't feel good accepting this new normal of chosing between performance or resolution.
I want Performance + Resolution!
