Need for Speed Payback is to be updated with a whole new way to play, according to a tweet from yesterday afternoon. Online free roaming will be added to the game for free later this year.
At this stage, there's really not much else to report. We imagine there will be more information as the release draws near, but we doubt this will be more than what it sounds like.
The game failed to impress fans and critics when it released back in November, mainly due to the inclusion of microtransactions and loot boxes. Following some fairly heavy handed backtracking of these systems, it seems this update is another step in clawing back some good will from players โ but will online free roaming tempt you back?

Awsome you drive around online.
Wouldn't play this game if it was free. EA...Scums everything it touches.
Would like a game like test drive back then on pc, i hope theres a game like driving simulation game, combine with free roam as a person, like a gta style but focused on driving just casual like eating, sleep and drive, the mission would be like touring cross country point to point enjoy the view and music, join in a club cars, racing and free roam like meeting a legend racer and get advice from professional racer and go to car museum, the road full with casual driver, traffic, speed limits.. a game that different from many racing games around,
My problems with this game have nothing to do with the common complaints. I consider myself to be a fairly skilled gamer (most games I finish on their hardest mode) and 'decent' (though by no means great) at racing games, and spent about two dozen tries trying to finish the first race (the first one you have access too after the intro), and finally gave up.
I can get 2nd reliably, but rarely can I ever get first, let alone maintain it past that last turn. Even a damn near flawless run, the AI passes me on that last 90 degree turn. I have tried changing the skill level; though I have no idea what that setting does, since it doesn't seem to impact the race any.
If I play it enough, I am sure that I could eventually get the optimal path and finish 1st, but if the first race is that difficult, I am not sure how I would fare for the rest of the game. Any tips from someone that has played this?
@thedevilsjester You have to grind for bloody cards to upgrade your car.
@get2sammyb I don't think you can grind before that first race.
@thedevilsjester No idea, then.
Maybe the idea is you canโt win the first race whatever?
Payback is on my wishlist regardless, although at the moment I have yet to dedicate substantial time even to Rivals I bought earlier (granted, at least the game controls mercifully well on Vita), so this doesn't make much difference in my plans. But it's neat, I guess. Free roam online in MW2012 had pretty varied competition challenges and a whole separate set of upgrade conditions.
@Deadcow tell that to all the Pacman clones on Atari 2600.
Man I hate open world racing games. They're so stupid. "Drive half way across the city to your next race!" No. I just want to get on with the racing. Imagine if we did that in other games. Uncharted 5 has a twelve hour section where you're sat on the plane getting to the next level. Poppycock.
@thedevilsjester If you're talking about the race with the Datsun during the day time, I used Nitrous a fair bit on the straights and tried to use the racing line (what I think it would be) through the corners. I think I won on the third or fourth try?
