There’s a new Tomb Raider game in development, and Square Enix doesn’t want you to know just yet, but it’s called Shadow of the Tomb Raider. How do we know? Because it leaked months ago: Eidos Montreal is making it while Crystal Dynamics keeps itself occupied with The Avengers. Sorry for the spoilers.
Anyway, the only information Square Enix is willing to share right now is that a “new Tomb Raider game is coming”. The company’s statement continues: “Driven by the goal of putting our fans first, we want you to know that it won’t be very long between the official reveal and when you can play. Our journey together will begin with a major event in 2018. We simply can’t wait to take you on Lara Croft’s defining adventure.”
It’s all very strange to be honest. We had Shadow of the Tomb Raider pegged for a reveal at The Game Awards 2017 this evening, and the timing of this hastily prepared statement suggests that was potentially the original intention. But it would appear plans have changed, and Square Enix maybe wants a shorter marketing cycle prior to release.
We’re definitely intrigued, but until the publisher reveals its plans then this is just hot air really. We already knew that Eidos Montreal was making a new Tomb Raider, and all this statement really confirms is that we’ll learn more about it in 2018. Let’s hope this one doesn’t get caught up in an exclusivity scandal.

Interesting statement. I do wonder if it could be episodic the way it's worded. They talk about a "new approach" and "it won't be very long between official reveal and when you can play".
Just because you're able to play doesn't mean the whole campaign has to be there. It's worded very deliberately I think.
I guess I'm just thinking aloud, but this whole thing seems odd.
@get2sammyb Everything in gaming is odd these days, usually not in a good way either. Glad you mentioned "exclusivety" at the end, that was going to be my first comment. I'm going to assume no. Heck no even.
I think you're right about the timing too, was probably going to be shown tonight but for whatever reason they pulled it last minute. Maybe to work on Switch version?
well as long as they don't lock out the PlayStation user again like last time, EVEN though it's where their biggest fanbase is then it will be fine
@get2sammyb i don't think it will be episodic but "New Approach" could mean a change in gameplay, maybe less like Uncharted and more like a Traditional Tomb Raider game
With no Uncharted on the horizon I should be excited for this, but I'm not.
I did like Tomb Raider (2013), but I was pretty dissapointed by Rise of the Tomb Raider. I feel like the game got way overhyped due to being the face of Xbox for some time.
I'll play it no doubt, but it can wait.
"Driven by the goal of putting our fans first..."
We won't be making it a timed exclusive?
Our journey together? Hhhhmmmm. How much are the ticket/s?
As long as it's not exclusive to xbox then I'll be interested but the recent ones were still a generation behind Uncharted still.
"We're taking a new approach" by giving us loot boxes n microtransactions?? Lol nooooo please don't screw this up i love tomb raider
Where's the PS4 HDR support for Rise of the Tomb Raider?
Will it be long till the official announcement? Havent even started Rise anyway.
don't really care if it's timed exclusive or not, i already bailed on tomb raider the last time. so unless it's a re-reboot.. i'm not particularly interested.
@ShogunRok
Haha. They said the same sh*t about how this 'is for the fans' when going into full idiot mode and signing that deal with MS. Wouldn't shock me at all if they're that stupid again. If it was up to me I'd like to see it get as simultaneous release on PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC.
I loved Rise of the Tomb Raider even after feeling sour about the timed exclusivity. This is a day one purchase as long as they don't pull that again. The sequel was such a big improvement on the already impressive reboot.
I couldn't care less if its an Exclusive or not. The PS4 version wasn't well packaged with all the DLC content and bonuses too - reasonably priced as well - I bought it on both platforms and would probably buy the next one too...
Hopefully they change up the direction. With a new studio behind it, I have hope.
I’m not a big fan of the ‘Replayable, wide linear’ layout of the first 2. It doesn’t feel right, considering the story.
Talking of the story, let’s hope the new writers can pull through.
I enjoyed the first two, and will definitely be interested in this. IGN mentioned that the first letter of each sentence spells "Shadow" when put together. Might be a bit of a stretch lol
I'm game. I'm playing through TR Definitive Edition on PS4 right now, and I think it's pretty fun. More Tomb Raider doesn't hurt.
I enjoyed the first one but still haven't played the second one, because by the time it came to PS I was on to other games.
@get2sammyb By getting loot boxes, you'll potentially unlock more episodes so you can continue the story!
The first one was ok i still did not finish but i farmed the online trophies what a Pain was that.
@Tasuki
Similar thing with me. I loved the first one but by the time 2nd came I couldn't get into it. I still bought it though so they got my money 🤔
I hope it's not episodic. It works with Hitman, but I don't think it'll work with Tomb Raider.
@CFDennett I haven't even bought it yet.
Traitor! I will wait for a price drop. xD
I am a big LC fan, but as others have the said, the writing has been pretty bad. Rise was pretty much a rehash of all the first game's storybeats. And Lara turning increasingly in to Daddy's Little Girl – urgh. So here's hoping there's some improvements on that front.
@get2sammyb @Deadlyblack This. I read the statement and immediately thought of Hitman, which worked so well for Squeenix before they went and lost it... and yet a lot of folk, like me, just waited until it was all finished and got it cheap, and that was fine for something like Hitman, which wasn't the third part in a trilogy.
Discover the conclusion to some of this generation's most spectacular single-player, open-world, story-driven experiences one tomb at a time, every couple months.
Let's also not forget that Rise of the Tomb Raider has a card-based upgrade system you could spend real money on.
I really, really, REALLY don't want to be proven right on this (especially since I spent an hour at lunch today playing Tomb Raider Underworld on Nintendo DS... yep, I'm that big a fan) so I'll stay hopeful and keep my fingers crossed.
Something to look forward to. I really liked these new Tomb Raider games.
Dont get the hate for ROTTR. It was a great game. Yes the exclusivity period sucked, but that shouldnt take away from what was a complete and very enjoyable product.
Next tomb raider being episodic would suck for me. It almost would feel like there was an exclusivity period as i would be unlikely to buy till all episodes are on one diac
I loved the Tomb Raider reboot, and Rise of the Tomb Raider is one of my favorite games of all-time. Bring on the announcement!
“Our Journey begins with a major event in 2018...”. Could it be the release of the new Tomb Raider movie? That’s coming up soon.
It's about time we got official confirmation ! Now to wait for the legit announcement with trailer and/or release date.
@Cheski Nahh, I think the fact that it spells shadow is definitely deliberate, otherwise it is FAR too coincidental.
