You know that Ariana Grande song where she’s all like, THIS IS. THE PART WHERE? C’mon, you know the one. Anyway, this is the part where we post practically the same UK sales charts every week for, like, eight weeks because nothing much happens. That’s primarily because very little is coming out, but also holiday shopping trends have generally been determined by now.
So yes, expect to see Call of Duty: WWII and FIFA 18 dominating right through Christmas and into the New Year. Activision must be pretty stoked, to be honest – all the indications are that Call of Duty is back to its beastly best.
UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 9th December, 2017
- Call of Duty: WWII
- FIFA 18
- Star Wars Battlefront 2
- Super Mario Odyssey
- Assassin's Creed Origins
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- WWE 2K18
- The Sims 4
- LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2

I think a lot of people would have bet on Destiny 2 being in that top 10, but...
@ShogunRok Indeed. I'm going to blow your mind here: it's 33rd.
Ouch for Destiny 2.. but it deserves it really. For a game that had such a huge and public "backlash" Battlefront 2 is selling very well I guess? Lovely to see Origins at No5, it really deserves its success.
I see the Call of Duty name is still a huge seller. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. GTA5 though, I must be the only person who hasn't bought it at this point.
@get2sammyb DAYUM
@ShogunRok It's one place behind the retail release of Minecraft: Story Mode Season 2.
Wow star wars battlefront 2 is higher than I thought. Lol.
Wowzer, Destiny 2 is not pulling in the punters. Star Wars BF2 is doing solid business but we are one week out from the launch of a new film and it is still being promoted like mad by EA. Core gamers have already bought it or are not going to.
Go Odyssey though!
Anyone buying GTA now would get a lot of game for their money.
@get2sammyb Why dont they try to make a more complete package. You could even make a offline campaing with optional online and fully online PVP. I know i sound like a madman.
@LieutenantFatman Nope one more here and somehow i just dont want it.
Same old top ten? If not for Odyssey I would agree.
Oh and add a third person who hasnt bought GTAV.
It's a bit of a shame that so many of the games on this list implement micro transactions/loot boxes/ over priced DLC to some extent.
@sinalefa I'm sure you'll get the inevitable Switch port.
There is s story going around that Microsoft and Sony are offering refunds on Destiny 2, for people who didn't pre order the DLC, as they have now been locked out of a lot of the original content unless they buy it?
Destiny 2 in 33rd is no surprise. Locking base game users out of core content is a no no.
Where need for speed? Im glad thats out of the top 10.
SWBF 2 has free DLC dropping on Wed before the movie.
As usual, people continue to buy EA's trash.
@LieutenantFatman Not the only one... I have no interest in GTA5.
I too am surprised that SWBF2 is doing as well as it is - especially with all the negativity surrounding it. I haven't played much - not since it 'officially' released anyway. Assassin's Creed: Origins has been occupying my time.
I did jump into Destiny 2 today - mostly to catch Xur as he had the Prometheus Lens and thought I would do the Curse of Osiris campaign. Its very mediocre and very short. people complained about the Dark Below but that felt 'bigger' to me and they also upped the level for ALL players regardless of whether or not they purchased the Expansion.
@get2sammyb
GTAV is like Skyrim: I skipped it on PS3, PS4 and Switch. No interest regardless of system.
Now, RDR2 is a different thing....
Next week: 'Okami HD steals the top spot from Call of Duty'. Well, one can dream
... I know it's easy to hate on BF2 - but the sad thing is that there's a really good game screaming to get out and away from all the loot box horror... in-game is now a LOT more generous with the rewards (I earned almost 2k from one game - shows how quick you can now purchase heroes, etc.) and with the new faction system and new maps, etc dropping any minute... I hope they don't re-introduce microtransactions (they inevitably will) - and I hope they learn, learn, LEARN from this! (the beauty of all this 'generosity' is that virtually everyone will be on an even keel by Xmas - so it won't matter if they do re-introduce paying for loot boxes) - there's only a finite amount you can win!
@1ManAndHisDroid I'm sorry to have to disagree. Even with the tweaks to the amount of credits and points earned in-game, the basic system (good players get rewarded with vehicles, specials and heroes to become even better; average players can't use them because the good players beat them to it and / or the match times out before you've earned enough) is deeply flawed.
They either need to add a timed health bar to the heroes, to stop them being hoarded by the select few elites, or block people from using them twice in one match (because the heroes are so wildly overpowered, you've probably earned enough to buy the hero right away again after death). Oh, and remove all the heroes' +50% health Star Cards that people purchased in that first week, before they deactivated microtransactions.
Otherwise, the current status quo will prevail, namely the game judging people to be "not good enough" for anything other than a standard soldier role, and a solid half of the people playing online will never see, experience or enjoy much of what the game has to offer... all the stuff they advertised on the back of the box, and in trailers, which is locked away behind insidious grinding and / or the future return of microtransactions.
You're right about one thing; there is an amazing game somewhere amidst all this mess. The attention to detail is phenomenal and the objective-based nature of modes creates more narrative than "kill them before they kill you", which is wonderful.
@RogerRoger - loving the username btw! yeah, I'm not sure on this - I'm not brilliant at it by any stretch of the imagination, but I prefer the 'earning' of heroes, etc. than a token floating around (which can be farmed) - aaaand - if you work together you double your points, and I always seem to have enough for a super trooper (lights are always shining) when I need one... I think the heroes need to be OP - because there are so many bottlenecks (after the MTU section, after the AT-AT section, etc.) it often becomes impossible to break through normal ranks... I personally think balance is good overall - I do like the idea of timed heroes though - a hero for 2 minutes or whatever... that would enable a good rotation and prevent player domination...
@1ManAndHisDroid Thanks! Yours made me smile, too!
Oh, huge improvement over the floating token, I'm in favour of earning heroes as long as the goals are attainable for all and not immediately locked down as soon as the top six players in a 40-player match grab them and spend the rest of the timer showboating.
As far as the tanks, starfighters, etc. I've seen far too many people get them and then hide, and the usual limit is, what, two per map? That's hardly fair... you're absolutely right, tanks and heroes are for breaking bottlenecks and, when used as such, they're defeated after a few minutes and somebody else has a turn. That's fair, but so many just hoarde them.
I hate being the guy bringing up the original Battlefront II (because that's been done to death and progress is progress) but heroes in that game had a slowly-decreasing health bar that could be re-filled or paused by earning kills. It was balanced so that good players could last a while, but to do so required taking risks, fighting the good fight and, eventually, you fell no matter what. I'd love to see that back, simply because it worked on all levels.
Anyway, this was all about the charts, wasn't it?! I'm not surprised to see Battlefront II up there, no matter what. New clinically-constructed cash-grab kids film out Thursday and parents doing the Christmas shopping before the schools shut down... no amount of controversy can stop the Star Wars brand printing money. May the porgs be with you (because they'll be everywhere else anyway)!
