PlayStation as a brand is at that age now where many of us can look back and remember growing up with Sony's original home console. Indeed, nostalgia can be a powerful thing; it can drive us to dig out dusty old machines and briefly transport ourselves back to a different time. HyperPlay RPG is a print magazine crafted by fans of retro releases - specifically those of the role-playing variety. Our pals over at Nintendo Life have covered the publication before, but its latest issue is definitely more in line with our own interests here at Push Square.
Issue #3 is stuffed with original PlayStation RPG coverage, and we're lucky enough to have been sent a copy so that we can tell you lot all about it. Right off the bat, it's clear that a lot of time, effort, and passion has been poured into this latest creation. Some colourful Xenogears fan art adorns the front cover, and the back is home to a lovingly drawn picture of Final Fantasy IX's cast.
Inside, we've got everything from features to reviews. It's a relatively small magazine - clocking in at 44 pages - but it's absolutely packed with writing. In contrast to many of the bigger printed publications of today, HyperPlay RPG doesn't fill its pages with fluff. Instead, we're treated to lengthy articles and a heck of a lot of information, making for an especially interesting read. It's also worth mentioning that the magazine's smaller size makes it a great travelling companion.
So, what's actually in this issue? Well, the biggest draw here is its huge Xenogears review, which is swiftly followed by an equally large Xenogears feature. Squaresoft's mech-touting RPG never actually released here in Europe, so reading all about it may prove to be an enlightening experience. It's exactly the kind of super in-depth stuff that you'd expect of a quality fan magazine.
Of course, you can't possibly bang on about classic PlayStation RPGs without mentioning Final Fantasy at least several times, so it's no surprise to see the franchise take up multiple pages. A feature on the series' top nine scenes caught our eye in particular, and needless to say, the memories came flooding back as we read through it.
Later on, Final Fantasy IX, Breath of Fire III, Vandal Hearts, and The Legend of Dragoon are all reviewed in detail. Again, the nostalgia levels are off the charts, and the reviews themselves are well written, offering some real insight into what makes each title tick. Across the entire publication, it's clear that the team take pride in their work, which is fantastic to see.
HyperPlay RPG #3 is a well made fanzine oozing with passion and some great writing. If you're a fan of PlayStation classics and you're keen to get your nostalgia on, then this PlayStation Special issue earns an easy recommendation.
Now, if you'll excuse us, we're off to rummage through our PSone collection...

I loved Legend of Dragoon. So many people gave FF VII so much praise but The Legend of Dragoon was leagues better.
So many memories, the first time I see geyser of blood from downed enemy in vandal heart (that was quite shocking), the complex story of xenogears (and the difficulty, the bosses are tough), playing as dragon at the start of breath of fire 3, final fantasy 9 is just okay, I prefer 7. I don't like legend of dragoon though, I prefer final fantasy 7, and I remember legend of dragoon receive an average score in egm magazines.
@TrueAssassin86x This is a magazine!
I want it love my old magazines, especially the ones with the FF9 reviews!
I would love to have that magazine. Internet's nice, but gaming magazines are something else. I really miss most of my old issues of GamePro, Nintendo Power and Game Informer (though I still have plenty of these).

@kincl4 Ordered
@kyleforrester87 The right decision. You won't regret it 😉
@kincl4 Ordered mine too. Looking forward to reading this. I can always use some nostalgia from my childhood. Plus, I really miss good gaming magazines.
My fave was always Amiga Power,very funny..those guys were pioneers of words like hgghnn,tsch,mngarh..there was an unfortunate scandal of them reviewing demos as full games.Very sad.i wish i still had my 1200 and old magazines.
Breath of Fire 3 is my all time fave RPG. Wish PSN had a retro back catalogue of PS1 titles so I could play it again.
@Tasuki I loved both FF7 and Legend of Dragoon. I would pay big for a simple upgrade HD with some graphical upgrades like FF0 and upgraded movies.
@wiiware Legend of Dragoon had way more active gameplay then FF7. And the story was awsome. For me it was Turn based gameplay 2.0 and the story was great fun. Final Fantasy 7 had my favorite story, materia was really good. You should try Koudelka if you can find it. A Gothic horror rpg.
Nice to see the HyperPlay lads getting the credit. Its extremely time consuming trying to fit in older JRPGs to an adult gamers lifestyle, so this is the perfect companion. I wouldn't mind the 4 issue set for the summer holidays!
@Flaming_Kaiser I forget about the legend of dragoon gameplay, I only remember I prefer ff7 story. Sony should release it like ff7 (ps1 to ps4 version).
Tout à fait merveilleux, @JoeBlogs, tout à fait merveilleux!
