Square Enix dropped a new piece of Final Fantasy VII Remake key art earlier this week, reassuring fans that, you know, it still exists and everything. The bottom line, though, is that we've seen virtually bugger all of the highly anticipated release barring a couple of brief trailers. Still, not everyone has found the silence to be such a downer - some onlookers have speculated that the Remake might make it out later this year, or we'll at least get a release date of some sort at E3. Sadly, by the sounds of it, neither of these things are going to happen - not even close.
Speaking to Japanese publication Famitsu - as translated by Gematsu - producer Yoshinori Kitase makes out like the project still has a long, long way to go before it's ready. "We're still brushing up the scenes we showed you in the trailer," he says. "The level of quality we need to hit is coming into view, but there is still some way to go from here." Certainly doesn't sound like we're getting it in 2017, does it?
Still, there is some hope that the game's not too far away. Kitase goes on to say that "I have hope that [we will show the game this year], but that still hasn't been decided. However, when we show it next, I would like to do so in a way that's a step further than a trailer, such as at an event where people can experience it." If a build of the title is actually playable at an upcoming event, we might actually be getting somewhere.
In any case, the whole thing's definitely got a Final Fantasy XV feel to it. We're not saying Final Fantasy VII Remake is going to be in and out of development for ten years - God forbid - but Square Enix clearly announced the project too early, even if its presence did make for one of the greatest press conferences of all time.
What are your thoughts on the remake? Do you think we'll see it in the next couple of years, or will it be ported to the PS5? Be as cynical as you like in the comments section below.

Take your time and don't miss anything out from the classic original. Anything.
Sad thing this is only part 1 god knows how much we will have to wait for the whole thing.
Hmm don't think it's fair to say it has a FF15 feel to it, but of course I'd like for it to be released ASAP. I suspect SE poured a fair amount into FF15 and need to let the coffers fill up a bit again but I imagine now it's out of the way they'll be able to put more resources into FF7.
Of course I don't know their development process but they are releasing it in seperate instalments, It's possible they want to get each of these instalments playable so once the first drops its just a case of tweaking and finalising the next instalments? Either way the roadmap is undoubtably complex but it sounds like they are making progress. If it drops off the radar for 2 years..then it's time to worry.
I reckon that when all chapters are complete we will be at the very end of the PS4 life cycle. Then it will be immediately ported to Sony's next gen machine, probably as a full package or in some sort of bundle.
@fchinaski They won't finish all the chapters this generation. My understanding is that each instalment is going to have the scale of a full game. We'll be way into PS5 by the time they wrap this up.
"but Square Enix clearly announced the project too early, even if its presence did make for one of the greatest press conferences of all time."
that's because fans wouldn't shut up about it, i think they just announced it to shut people up
@get2sammyb They also won't even remake FF7 in the first place and announce it at e3 2015, right? Let's wait and see lol
@get2sammyb Yeah, I think so too. But I'm thinking there's a chance we'll see the them all on the PS4, even if they will be launched for the PS5 later on. In any case, odd plan for SquareEnix. Hope it does launch in a timely manner anyway once they get the ball rolling.
Ugh. I don't know how to feel about this remake sometimes.
@get2sammyb @fchinaski I "feel" like this is less FFXV, more TLG. Show it at E3 running on current Gen hardware, release it years later on next Gen hardware.
If they are only maybe showing it this year, then no way no how it's out before holiday 2018. And that's only part 1. Holiday 2018 will be PS4s fifth year, so even with Pro out now I wouldn't be surprised if in March 2019 we see PS5 for a holiday 2019 release. They seem to need the power for PSVR and they should be ready with PSVR2 by then with better resolution.
So all that being said, they should just say they are planning on it being a next Gen release, or at least a dual release, be forthright about when and where this is heading.
I'm planning on placing a preorder when I get the chance and then leaving it in my Will for my kids.
@rjejr Yeah, your math makes sense. I can totally see a PS5 announced on late 2018/start of 2019 for release in 2019. But with the PS4 huge install base I also see games being released for both until 2020 or later. That's why I think PS4 will see the full package, even if the PS4 is already last gen by then. That's all IF SquareEnix doesn't let this enter development hell, of course.
They did manage to squeeze in three Final Fantasy XIII entries on one generation. And those were big games.
Not surprising in the least, would be surprised if it released any earlier than late 2018.
I would rather have 6 personally. But this game probably won't even come out until 2019 at the earliest.
I guess I can just hope that it also comes out on PC so I can play it on one system when it's fully finished.
2020 release at the earliest me thinks
It IS happening, that's all I need to know. I want them to take their time and do it right.
Take your time. Just maybe give us a HD port of, 6, 5 and 9 to keep us busy in the meantime
The only thing I really want to know is if Kingdom Hearts III will come out before part one of this. That's what I'm really looking forward to.
@fchinaski "see games being released for both until 2020 or later."
FIFA will still be released on PS3 in 2020.
I'm more concerned about this game than others b/c they said it was't going to be all 1 game. I'm not sure if they said in parts or episodic but it wasn't going to be all in 1 game. So if part 1 comes out holiday 2018, then PS5 (that's my best bet for a name) comes out in holiday 2019 w/ part 2, then by holiday 2020 do we really want a port of a PS4 game engine on our PS5 or do we want a game in a new PS5 engine? And if part 3 - I've always assumed 3 parts, hoping for 2 myself - is out during the 2nd year of PS5 that might look mighty ugly.
So my fear is they do that calendar math, and decide since 2 of the 3 parts will be on PS5, and Squenix cares about graphics above all else, might as well move part 1 to PS5 as well to keep a coherent look and game engine.
Of course if by "Episodic" they mean 2 parts 3 months apart, well then PS4 won't be a problem. And that's what I'm really waiting for them to tell us - how many parts, how much time between each part? Once they actually tell us that then we can really wonder about PS4 or PS5. But the longer they take, the worse it loks to all be on PS4.
Did you see what they did to Destiny players? Parts 2 and 3 on PS3, part 4 on PS4 only. PS3 got Diablo 3 but only PS4 gets updated. I'd rather PS4 get none of it than only 1 part. I'm still made some copany made a LEgo Hobbit game that only covered 2 of 3 movies. They knew there were 3 movies, they made the gaem anyway covering only the first 2, never added the DLC.
Bottom line - I just don't trust any company in the gaming industry to do the right thing any more. Yooka-Laylee on Wii U being my latest annoyance.
@rjejr Seems like they dont know how many parts there will be or i itll cover all the original game. A leaving art guy also said he hadnt seen anything more than what we had for 8 months.
And this is them polishing a trailer acene from over a year ago? Okay, Ima rant about tis.
Can someone put Nomura back in his cage please? Please!? What kind of jackass announces a FF13 spin off THREE DAMN YEARS before we even get a release of anything 13.
And to top it all off, when he was finally booted in 2012 and it became FFXV...well he said it was 20%-25% done. Meanwhile Tabata, the man who gets stuff done, said it hadnt even taken form at that point.
6. F******. Years
This isnt even counting whatever the hell the mess that is Kingdom Hearts became.
Nomura has absolutely no concept of projecht (ha) management. Nothing to show after 6 years let alone planning it to be a spinoff in a line of games that hadnt even begun to get close to release at that point?
Its telling Tanabe made 15 happen in 4 years from scratch. Thats fair. 4 years for a game like that, hell id say 5 or even 6 at a stretch as he was showing things off in reasonable time. Yes there was delays but it was making progress all the time and it was known and shown a fair bit in the latter half of that time.
What I want to know is how Nomura has spent so long doing basically bugger all when the base game exists and is there as reference for what needs changing etc.
God, as much as I disdain fake trailers, live translated press events, and how big third parties treat something as simple as single player as new groundhreaking stuff (Or the term AAA, which again is a meaningless buzzword without concrete figures) I cannt stand Nomura.
I will take the upper brass of Konami over that man, since they at least actively make something.
@BLP_Software I think it's safe to say you're going to give yourself a heart attack before FFVII comes out.
I'm realizing the entire industry sux. I think Y-L finally broke me. Or enlightened me. Had Zelda skipped Wii U I would have given up on Nintendo entirely and banned them from my house and bought my kids an X1S and Rare Replay.
I really don't expect to ever play FFVII. If I get to, great, but I really don't expect to. KH3 should be fine holiday 2018 on PS4. Maybe.
@rjejr Bro Ill have offed myself by the time 7 lands.
YookaLaylee killed my optimism about crowdfunding my game. You think its bad for consumers. Try being a developer whrre your avenue of freedom is lost.
@BLP_Software "Try being a developer whrre your avenue of freedom is lost."
Yeah, you got me there. I'm annoyed, but your entire livelihood is at stake, that's a problem.
My son's in 9th grade in high school, so practically your age that's not weird at all, and we just paid $212 for him to get college credit for his Visual Basic course, he wants to make games too. Him and his brother have been making a really long JRG in RPG Maker VX for about 3 years now. My hope is even if he can't make games - long hours of hard pressure filled work and little pay - he'll still be able to use his skills for web design or VR or whatever else pops up the next few years.
Just saying even if you can't run your own game making company maybe you can use your skills for something else. My sister got her college degree in TV communications or something, now she is running video on the internet, which wasn't even a thing back then. Always options. I have a M.A. and I'm a homemaker, not exactly how I planned it, could have saved myself $30,000.
