Fallout 4 got its PS4 Pro patch last week, meaning that the game is now officially supported by Sony's supercharged system. As many of you will no doubt be aware, the open world title doesn't run brilliantly on a standard PlayStation 4, with regular frame rate drops hurting the overall experience.

Fortunately, Digital Foundry has confirmed that the Pro update does make the release run more smoothly, although there are times when the post-apocalyptic adventure still can't quite keep itself at a stable 30 frames per second. Bethesdaaaaa!

That said, the patch does bring some other noticeable improvements. For starters, the game now runs at 1440p on the Pro, making for a much crisper image. Draw distance has been enhanced rather nicely, too, with environmental details popping up to create richer looking locations. And last but certainly not least, the lighting's been given a really positive overhaul, allowing for some gorgeous god ray effects.

The update presents a definite step up on more powerful hardware, then, but Digital Foundry also ran through the release with the Pro's Boost Mode enabled. Available as part of PS4 firmware 4.50's beta, Boost Mode is obviously meant for titles that don't have a dedicated Pro patch, so the publication had to perform its tests on the previous version of Fallout 4. Funnily enough, it turns out that with Boost Mode enabled, Fallout 4 actually runs better than ever, offering the most consistent frame rate available. It's still not perfect and you don't get to take advantage of the other benefits that the update brings, but it's an interesting discovery all the same.
