2017 marks the 30th anniversary of Final Fantasy, and it sounds like Square Enix has plenty in store for such a grand occasion. The Japanese publisher has said in the latest issue of Famitsu that it'll announce its plans "soon", but it's currently anyone's guess as to what those plans actually are.
It's worth noting that just last week, a rather ridiculous rumour surfaced stating that Square Enix will release the first episode of Final Fantasy VII Remake, a remastered Final Fantasy XIII trilogy, and a Final Fantasy collection - featuring every game from I to IX - next year. We're still not quite sold on that one, but we suppose that it all depends on how ambitious the publisher's plans are.
Is there anything in particular that you hope to see from Square Enix in 2017? Make fantasy a reality in the comments section below.

The prophecy is real...
I'd just like to see some relatively normal, nicely designed, affordable merchandise. These £200+ collectors editions of things are great and all, but a few cool shirts, art books, soundtrack reissues, stationery etc would be nice. I'd also love to see a nice selection of small/medium statues (not figures). Oh, and I know it'll never happen but it'd be great if they let Good Smile make some FF Nendoroids!
All I want is the old games bringing to PS4, in a collection or as stand-alone releases, full to the brim with trophies. I'll sit and platinum the lot of them. You'll not get another review out of me for months.
I can see the final fantasy collection happening i mean how difficult is to pack final fantasy 1 to 9 on one disc. As for the XIII trilogy i dont see that one happening. An the 7 remake most likely will release next year for its 20 aniversary
I'd like a 13 trilogy on PS4, since I really liked Lightning.
I also wouldn't mind the huge collection.
I want it all!
mmm I am preoccupied for my health if the collection is real, because I am going to get a platinum for each and every one of them
Great time to take advantage of us fanboys (and girls), FF is as exciting right now as it's been in a long while between FF15 and the FF7 remake.
I'd even give FF13 another crack.
I can see the remastered XIII trilogy coming to PS4, but I'm not double dipping, as much as I liked the first two (haven't got around to play Lightining Returns yet, but will soon).
The so-called Final Fantasy collection seems like a pipe dream to me, and the only way I'll get one is if they put everything in one disc with trophies.
God please I want all of it .. like RIGHT NOW lol
The Collection with Trophies, FF13 , FF7 Remake - ill take all of it.
The only Thing Im worried about is how on earth will I manage to have a "real life" next year - with Persona5, Tales of Berseria, FF12 HD, Mass Effect and NiNoKuni2 i guess my social life Comes to an end LOL
Cant wait though!
I want the ff1-9 collection and ff dissidia on ps4 please!!!
I pray to the memetic rumoured Lightning shrine in Toriyama's office that FFXIII trilogy may happen at the very least. It's one (if triple) flagship entry in the franchise I'd like to play through again, so older packs are undeniably welcome but a lower priority in my book - I still have several newer FFs to beat and other grand JRPG franchises like Tales and Star Ocean to finally resume anyway. Archive binging this genre can be time-consuming. XD Although since IX is also among my favourite FFs, a remake of THAT one would be awesome (frankly, I'd personally even take it over FFVII remake). Hey, dreaming is a free action.
Otherwise, let's wait and see what Square Enix is up to.
Anything Final Fantasy 9 related please. I guess dissidea is coming, and we already know 12 HD will be coming out. DLC for 15 will also be on the way. Would be great to get the first part of 7 remake though.
I just hope SquareEnix consider our poor wallets in all this!
I tried with XIII, I tried so hard to derive the slightest bit of enjoyment from it. It was just so dull. It's not as if I'm saying every other FF game is a masterpiece, although I sort of enjoyed the second one, even with its faults. I didn't mind XIII-2 and it fixed most of my issues with the first but it played like a visual novel at times with the branching dialogue and times. Still haven't played LR but I'll only play it if Lightning gains the slightest beginnings of a personality. If there is a collection for PS4 then I suppose fans will be happy at least??? Although they'd be better off playing IV, VII, IX or X. Or even VIII, which had a good story but the junction system kinda went over my head.
If the collection turns out to be real, there goes my money. Also wouldnt mind the XIII collection on PS4 to complement the rest of the remasters etc, never finished Lightning Returns
I'm just hoping that ridiculous rumour is true and then I wouldn't have to buy another game for quite some time whilst being one very happy gamer
You know what I'd like? That Dissidia game in the arcades. Specifically, news on a console port. I'm surprised that crazy rumor didn't throw that game in for color.
If they do a I-IX Collection on the PS4, replete with Trophies for each one, I'll never need another console. That would be the way to see out my gaming life in its entirety. Until FFXVI of course, that'd be worth a life extension if I can get one.
@nessisonett I'm at a loss to explain how you found junctioning sailing over your head. You find a Guardian force, combine it with one of the main characters, Draw magic, combine the magic to the guardian. Its dead dead easy. I've heard people complain about it before, especially in some legacy reviews but I thought the system was fantastic (if a little grindy tbf). Junctioning extended the game for years, expert ff8 players have been concocting different builds and strategies pretty much to the present day. You cant say that about any other game in the series bar the mmos. Learn it lol.
Have you played ff15? If not you should, its boss.
I would like to replay ff9 or ff4 the only 2 I haven't completed bar ff10 which I'm still working through on the vita and ff15 on ps4. I couldn't imagine replaying them all at once what a nightmare.
@themcnoisy In all honesty I was like 9 years old haha. I bought VIII on Steam a few months ago and got to the end of the Forest Owls mission in Timber but haven't really played it since. I haven't actually bothered junctioning any characters yet cause the menu kinda overwhelmed me. I get the main idea is to draw more magic to improve the stat that magic is bound to but that means you can't really make a magic oriented character like the other games in the series.
Oh I can't wait for this. I have only to play most of VIII out of I-IX and still haven't beat that yet(im on the last disc, okay!). I almost beat XIII but got stuck towards the end, unfortunately same would said for XII lol. So pretty much this whole collection would be appreciated since disc conditions and no longer working systems stop me from finishing/ starting these beauties. Oh and I have mentioned before...30th anniversary PS4 Pro....I would buy one Square.
@nessisonett @themcnoisy Junctioning flat out sucked, let's be honest!! I never got along with it, I dislike FF15s Magic system and the ascension system is largely rubbish too. Materia system and sphere grid all the way!!
@kyleforrester87 I'm playing through X HD just now and I've just got Sin left. One question though, I've finished Auron and Tidus' routes and I'm leading Auron backwards along Wakka's route, starting with Triple Foul. Should I lead Tidus down Yuna's route to have another healer or should I put him on Auron's for the HP and Strength?
@nessisonett Ahhh who's to say, are you using the beginners or expert grid? Either way I don't think it'll matter too much but I always value tanks so it's all about the HP and extra strength for me. That said its been many years since I've played the last section of FF10
Enjoy the ending though, it rocks.
I really wanted to try ff7, i have heard wonders of it, but haven't really played it 😡
@Xaritah FF7 is on the store for PS4 now, if you meant the original
I've been wanting FF1-6 with trophies for a long time so this would be excellent news. Considering SE's love for Vita, I hope they get released on Vita
about time to announce FF16, coming 2028
@ZurapiiYohane64 8 and 9 are great you will be in for a treat I love them both.
What's everybody's battle system preference? Old skool turn based, the gambit system (my personal fave), the paradigm system or the new FFXV hacky slash combat?
@ApostateMage The old school turnbased is fun, but lets be honest 90% of the time you are just mashing X to attack and get the battle over with. There are times when you have to play more strategically (certain bosses), and in these instances I'd say turnbased is better. But the combat in Type-0 and FF15 is also engaging, just in a different way. Pro's and con's of each, but it does give me confidence that FF7 will still be a lot of fun without turnbased battles.
As far as turnbased goes, the Bravely series nails it.
PLZFF9REMAK?
@ApostateMage I was a old skool turn based fan until ff15s hacky slash blew my mind
@whywai88 lol but then we'd know for sure that it'd be worth the wai88
@SegaBlueSky Same here give me a high quality statue any day. And indeed no 200+ editions.
@kyleforrester87 I liked the fighting in Legend of Dragoon god i would love to see a new game of that one or even a remaster.
I-IX with trophy support would be amazing. It would be even cooler if they had different versions of each game, like the NES, PSP, PS1, Steam/PS4 and GBA versions where applicable.
@kyleforrester87 I totally agree with this. However, just because most older FFs had simple turn based battles where you just hammer X, it doesn't mean a new turn based system would have to be just as simple. They could do an amazingly deep and complex turn based thing.
That said, FF hasn't been fully turn based since IV, with the exception of X, and has been trying to be more actiony throughout, using ATB as a kind of crutch because their tech didn't let them do it fully. They went more full action with series like KH but it felt clunky and odd, showing they didn't quite know how to pull it off.
Kind of like how people hate RE5 for adding co-op and betraying the series roots, yet there's an interview from the late 90s with Shinji Mikami saying he wanted RE1 to be an FPS survival game with co-op but the PS1 couldn't handle it. So yeah, Square have wanted a more rapid and actiony FF experience for ages, they've only recently figured out how to do it properly.
@kyleforrester87 since i haven't played the original i think i prefer to wait for the new one 😄
