Always sparking off a hot topic, our pals over at Digital Foundry have put the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Dark Souls III side by side, and according to the respected publication, the game performs a fair bit better on Sony's console.
Apparently, the PS4 edition manages to maintain a solid 30 frames per second in places where Microsoft's machine struggles, even though the former runs in 1080p, while the latter upscales from 900p. In other words, Sony's system is a clear winner when it comes to both performance and image quality. Of course, graphical advantages are all but expected on PS4 when console comparisons pop up these days, but Digital Foundry's report still makes for an interesting read.
Are you happy to hear that Dark Souls III performs as expected on PS4? Try not to complain about frame-pacing in the comments section below.

Made for an interesting video, although the only visual difference that I could actually detect were the slightly jaggy shadows when standing still on the player character.
30fps
Why buy this game now? Shouldn't i wait for the inevitable Dark Souls 3 remaster on PS4.5? If we thought remasters were bad this gen already, just wait. We'll have the remastered remaster 4.5 editions of every.single.game.
Buy the time I get round to this I'll be playing it on VR cinema mode. Praise the sun.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi You can say that again, there are SEVERAL games I am eagerly waiting to play on cinema mode, in fact that is probably how my psvr will be used the most. Even if we don't get a NMS VR edition, I will still happily it wearing the headset!
@Napples Won't be remasters. Both consoles will share the same library. If the rumour is even true in the first place.
@Swiket I hope you said the same thing in the ps3 - xbox 360 era. Ps3 was getting slaughtered for lower fps and resolution.
@stevie85 yeah they'll just be patched to run better on the PS4K.
@WebHead That's how I imagine it will work. It would be a very simple thing for devs to do.
Given Fromsoftware already worked on a PS4 game they could learn valuble lessons from, even if the xbox and playstation were of equal power I'd expect nothing less.
@stevie85 it was mostly a joke, but if the rumors are in fact true, this could happen. Companies would re-release game like, say Dark Souls 3, running at 60fps with enhanced graphics. They could literally do that with EVERY game, make a few graphical changes, up the fps, and boom, instant $60 remaster.
I love all the XBone peeps who paid for the newest console and then say graphics don't matter. Dude, then go through your backlog before buying a new system with better graphics. Hahaha.
I mean, I know there are other differences between one console gen and another but let's face it, it's always been "buy the new gen console, experience better graphics".
@Napples They could, but I don't think it would benefit them as it would probably cost more than they would take in from such a move. I caneed see developers using patches in order to update older games graphical capabilities. This would be much simpler and less time consuming.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi I'm with you on that! PSVR cinema mode lovely... might even replay dark souls 2 again.
"Are you happy to hear that Dark Souls III performs as expected on PS4?"
Yes and no. Yes, it's a good thing it manages to maintain good specs. No because I'd rather have both consoles have the same game quality. It always kinda irritates me when one version of a game has a hard time running on one system.
@glassmusic Framerate is more important to me.
And the ragging on Quantum Break is hilarious.
'[insert every Multi-format game in here] Runs Best on PS4 When it Comes to Consoles'
@glassmusic Maybe for you. I don't care about graphics when it comes to consoles (because, let's be honest: a PS4 is really pitiful compared to a proper gaming PC). Rather, I buy new consoles for the exclusive games they get.
@Grawlog The ps4 has a stronger gpu than the x1, that makes the difference.
I'm still thinking about getting this game. My first FromSoftware game was Bloodborne, which I love and I'm still playing. I have a friend that will stream Dark Souls III when it's out, so I'll watch him play before I possibly buy it. So many good games coming out soon! How fun is that?
