A couple of weeks ago, Sony confirmed that it's going to be implementing PlayStation 2 emulation on the PlayStation 4, allowing you to replay some of the finest titles of that rather incredible era on your new-gen console. The emulated games will feature Trophy support, and will apparently enjoy boosts in overall performance. Not bad, eh?
However, since the announcement, people have been eager to find out whether or not their old PS2 discs will be of use, and, well, we hope that you're not going to be too disappointed. According to a leaked YouTube video of PS2 cult hit Dark Cloud running on PS4 - spotted by eagle-eyed Twitter user @BradazKing - PS2 discs and downloaded PS2 Classics won't be playable on PS4. Of course, the video and its description, from which this information was gleamed, have since been removed.
Given the timing, this whole leaked reveal will probably show up at tonight's The Game Awards.
Update: Nope, despite the timing, there was no mention of PS2 emulation at The Game Awards. With that in mind, we should definitely hear all of the details at the upcoming PlayStation Experience press conference, which you'll be able to watch live on the 5th December.

Shouldn't this be counted as a rumor even thou its highly likely true
Honestly who would have PS2 discs but not the console?? I don't even see why the PS4 being able to read PS2 discs would even be a thought.
Have to be honest, no clue where all my old ps2 discs are packed up, prolly at the parents attic somewhere. Really though did anyone honestly think that you would be able to pop a ps2 disc in and play it? I mean come on.
Never tried Dark Cloud, and not sure I could stomach and of those old 3D models after being spoiled by the ps4, just being honest. (Although I think I could probably make an exception for Rogue Galaxy, wait was that ps1 or 2? Can't even remember lol)
Sorry but discussion of emulators is against the rules here. -Tasuki-
I hope I can at least transfer my PS2 classics I already bought on my PS3. Would give me another excuse to try to play Persona 4
There is no reason not to allow us to gain access to the game with our discs, Microsoft is doing it with Xbox 360 games.
@drpepperdude100 and those started with trophies. PS2 games did not. The amount of work required if they wanted to add trophies, which they are, off of discs, would be insane
Discussion about emulators and ROMS is not allowed here. -Tasuki-
@Matroska If I'm not mistaken, in most instances on consoles, BC was not obtained through emulation, rather through similar architecture or the addition of the old console architecture in the new console.
I'm not interested in the PS2 backwards compatibility, I own a ps2 Them adding trophy support doesn't make me any more interested either. Sony should be more concerned about PS3 backwards compatibility, not a system from 2 generations ago.
My PS2's 10 year anniversary of death is coming up fast 😢 while my GF's is in pristine condition. Dust = death, it's not like they just break for no reason. We play SH2-4 often and I don't see a DS4 improving anything. Not to mention they already remastered every "good" PS2 game on PS3 with trophies.
Ok guys just a friendly reminder discussion about "non official" ways of playing games is not allowed here. I have already edited some comments so this is a warning. Discussion of that kind of thing can get you a vacation from Push Square. If you want to discuss that stuff there are other places out there to discuss that stuff, Push Square is not one of those places I am afraid.
Thanks for understanding
The whole thing intrest's me little to none, I don't want them to waste time on this and the only place I see people support this waste of time is in these forum's, I speak to alot of people every day in party's and i've not spoken to anybody that want's backward's compatability, it's pointless.
@Tasuki were they mentioning it illegally? Or about the article itself as the article is about a built in ps2 emulator? Just curious.
Another thing, about this whole BC thing, how is it if it's an emulator and you have to buy your games..... Again, for the 10th time. Seriously sick of Sony doing this crap. -_-
Hopefully this whole things is a trick rumor and or fake.
If it wasn't for the people mentioning the WiiU on these forum's then I wouldn't even of known they still sold them here in the UK that alone tell's you how well they don't market the console here.
@Alpha If it's official way of playing older games by the company that holds the rights then it's ok to talk about it. Examples are Backwards compatibility, download services provided by the company like PSN, XBLA, Virtual Console or remasters or even emulation provided by the source company then it's fine.
Non official i.e. emulators on PC or modded/hacked devices, ROMS, torrents or anything of that nature is not allowed.
@Tasuki I have ps2 discs but no ps2....
@Tasuki Think I've spoken about that on a forum before so apologies...I'll make a note to not do that again!
@Tasuki Do you think they will make some way to move save date from the PS2 over to the PS4, or will it be starting over from scratch on all of the games??
@Alpha I bought them 1 time and sold almost all of them. I do have some really special games left. But i don't wanna play them with the old graphics. That's why i love remasters.
Meh.
It's a big shame that PS2 Classics won't carry forward seeing as Sony set the precedent for cross-buy. I understand that it costs money to add Trophies and stuff (and I'm glad they're doing that), but it's not like it was free for them to port games like Journey or The Unfinished Swan to PS4 either. I'm not sure why the latter games supported cross-buy when these won't, but I'll give the benefit of the doubt until we know more.
@sajoey Sony have a patent to add trophies to games in retrospect by triggering on certain values in memory. So if say the goal was to collect every item, the game would have a mechanism to keep track of the items the user has, and when the list is complete the game monitor triggers the trophy.
http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/03/21/are-trophies-coming-for-psone-and-ps2-classics
In short: pay again if you have the game. Hope prices and selection are good enough.
@GraveLordXD Not sure about Nintendo Life's rules but we prefer not to discuss it here, purely because the conversation can head in some... Unsavoury directions. I hope you understand.
So people really though that they would be able to pop a ps2 disc in their ps4 and it would play? Why would Sony waste their money creating this software for a 2 generation old console? Surely there can't be that much demand for it. Seems a little reactionary to me bc of the xboner sporting "some" bc. If they allow it, cool, if not, cool as well. Oh and sorry about the ROMS talk, didn't realize it was "illegal" here, lol.
@SonyInfinity I have ps2 discs but no ps2.....
@Grawlog BC became a hot topic again because Microsoft introduced into the one very recently, and coincidentally Sony starts an emulation program soon after, that is the correlation. Sure they will make some money, but I really think all this will entail is the ps1 and ps2 classics being sold on the ps4 psstore. Either way I personally couldn't care less, I have little time for the awesome new games releasing now, much less for games I played, and beat, over ten years ago.
I personally would rather Sony put all their time and effort into releasing an external HD. I know, I know you can swap it out internally rather easily, but would rather be able to pop externals in and out whenever I choose.
@themcnoisy Would you play said games again over a newer ps4 game? Alot of this to me seems to be nostalgia, just like you said. As has been shown many times before, many people ask for BC, but when they get it, it is barely used. Can't remember where I read that but I know it came from a Microsoft or Sony exec. Either way I hope it turns out how you all want it, more gaming options is always better and I would never assume to tell anyone how to enjoy their gaming time, be it with ps4 or ps2 titles.
It would of been nice But I didn't get my hopes up to much so, so be it. As long as TimeSplitters 2 comes to the PS4(I bet it don't) then I would buy that again(and maybe BurnOut 3 to) If not then I will just keep my PS2 out forever. Maybe SONY can make 2 versions of the PS5 1 version that just plays PS5 games and 1 version(more expensive of course) that plays all PS Discs Like they could of done with the PS4(it can't be impossible can it SONY to do?!)
I could go the rest of my life without playing a PS2 game and be fine. I just want more new PS4 games. I mean don't get me wrong I loved the PS2 but I have moved on.
@JLPick I doubt that you will be able to transfer the save data from PS2 over to the PS4, unless they come out with some way of you being able to transfer files from the Memory card to a flash drive or something like that. Besides with the addition of trophies, I can't see that happening.
@GraveLordXD I have to agree with you there, on NL. I never understood that either that users can't talk about that stuff but then oh here comes a article like you said and all of a sudden it's ok. But that's them, I can't speak for them on that subject all I can say is that over hear as Sammy pointed out the conversations can lead to other things. I know it's out there and people do do it but there are other places one can go to discuss that stuff. Here is not one of those places. I apologize for any confusion of the rules.
@Tasuki NL updated the rules a few months ago to allow users to talk about emulation in the context of older hardware generations. They just don't allow users to link anything illegal.
@SonyInfinity "Would you play said games again over a newer ps4 game?" Hell yes!! I spend more time playing ps1 games on my vita than vita games.
"many people ask for BC but never use it" Says who? I would. This is a lie that game companies have peddled, which does not ring true. Don't get me wrong I am in no hurry to play tlou, gta v or bio shock from last gen so soon. However I do have the urge to play Theme Park, Anna Kournikovas smash court, Sensi soccer, super monkey ball and final fantasy 12.
@SonyInfinity
"many people ask for BC, but when they get it, it is barely used. Can't remember where I read that but I know it came from a Microsoft or Sony exec"
Hmm, and would that exec just so happen to be from a company whose console doesn't offer backwards compatibility? Real easy to make arguments dismissing it when your console can't do it. But I guarantee you if the console could, all of a sudden they'd be singing a different tune.
I use BC. On my 3DS to play DS games, on my Wii U to play Wii games, on my Wii to play GameCube games, and on X1 to play 360 games. Not to mention all the older virtual console titles I own and play. Not sure what kind of gamer limits themselves to only games of the current gen- maybe this new modern breed of pop-gamer. But I (and many others, I assure you) play all kinds of games from all different generations.
Well I'm a gamer, and I guess when you get my age time is the enemy. I don't have time to play all the new games, much less ones I have already aged years ago. Look I get it, it does represent value, I just personally believe that people make a big deal out of it and in reality the vast majority will rarely if ever use it. Of course there will always be the outliers that are the exception, but does that make it worth the time and money to implement? I don't know. As I said before, I will not assume to know how other people spend their gaming time, but I would much rather Sony and Microsoft spend that effort offering new titles and things left external HD compatibility. All opinion of course.
@Flaming_Kaiser Actually..... That it a legitimate point. Lol. You got me xD
@Tasuki Alright, just making sure and was just curious lol. Thank you.
@Storytime7 This isn't Nintendolife I am afraid. Not trying to be rude about it, but some of the rules will vary, this is one of them I am afraid. IMO that rule is a big grey area and quite honestly it's bs. It's either allow it or don't but not half *** it.
So as a result none of it is allowed here I am afraid.
Some have suggested that Sony might sell it as an appointment with a one time purchase to play all the supported games, would that entice people?
@Alpha Its funny BC looks great but i dont want them to replace my chance of getting a great remaster of some epic classics dit you ever play Koudelka on the PS1 or Clocktower and Haunted Mansion on the PS2 i would love to see some of those remasterd. I would even tolerate PSVita graphics with some 1080P and 60 FPS.
@Tasuki I was just saying they changed the rules because you mentioned that people couldn't talk about emulation on NL, but the writers could post articles about it. It's not a big deal to me if PS doesn't want to allow it.
I hope Fatal Frame/Project Zero games are included.
@Tasuki Because the PS2's laser unit has a certain life span and I still own a fat. Sony stopped producing replacement units round 2008. You only get generic ones but these are rubbish. I still own a fair amount of PS2 games which most are in excellent condition. I'm lucky if my PS2 reads a dual layered game like God Of War 2. So yeah there are those of us who would really appreciate the effort Sony could've done by allowing us to still use PS2 games we own on the PS4. If only I knew then what I know now, I would've probably bought 10 extra laser head units.. :-/
https://youtu.be/63dmlHOz6jQ
And they finally announced them on the eu blog.
http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2015/12/04/8-fan-favourite-ps2-games-launch-on-ps4-tomorrow/
And just like I said, they will be sold on the PS store as ps classics. Pretty cool they are bumping them up to 1080 and adding trophies, and we got Rogue Galaxy on the first go round. This is what I don't understand, for those complaining that they have to "re buy" games they already own, why in the lords name are you buying something that you already own? If you already own it, play it on your ps2. This is for people who never had the games and for those who have them but love them so much they want to double dip and experience some of their old favorites in 1080p with trophies. The outrage over Sony charging for these games is just ridiculous. You honestly think they will give you 1080p upgrade, trophy support, share play support, streaming support, and remote play for free in these games. IMO that represents alot of value, especially since they didn't have to spend their time and effort doing this at all.
Didn't expect it but it's still idiotic.
@SonyInfinity because people like the fact that They own the game but may not own the system to play it on, due to any number of reasons, maybe a house fire burned down, and destroyed half the house with the ps2 system, and 45 out of 60 games? Or What about the Digital Versions at least? I bought Persona 4, Persona 3 and Fatal Frame, and I cant redownload them as crossbuy? I meant the PS3 could have done the same thing, 1080p, and trophies. But they didn't. In my opinion, its just Sony being greedy. The Vita was a flop, and a lot of stuff they said they would do, never once happened.
Slightly off topic but, remember when the Vita first came out and they were talking how they were saying that it would be able to remote play your PS3 games? any and all PSP games? what about the supposed PS2 games on Vita. Instead Sony didn't do any of that and ignore the platform, but they still release stuff on it cuz why? It makes them money. if you are to look up online about Vita Emulation you would know that (@tasuki I'm just saying an example please don't delete this lol hopefully it shouldn't cuz I said this before in a earlier article when the vita came out) The emulator is built into the device already, and people have found ways to boot up Backups of their own games, even physical ones like Crisis Core (not Digital at all in NA) and it ran 100% fine. Meaning Sony was just picking and choosing, patching games for exploits, and such. And they barley do that anymore. All it is for in my opinion is for money, cuz they know people will end up buying these, be it nostalgia, or games they never played, or cuz they have to have every copy in existence.
All I'm saying it would have been nice if I would be able to pop in my discs, and it download a copy of the digital version to my system in order to get it. But it needs the OFFICIAL disc, in the Drive in order to play it. Or you know, redownload my PS2 Classic on PS4. I cant access any of my PS2 Classics I bought and cant play anymore due to the fact my PS3 is broke now.
Aint gonna lie
Sony this rebuy your games over and over and over and over and over again, even if its the EXACT SAME ONE is getting old.
I mean when you buy a digital game, your actually just buying a license as some people say. Meaning digital games wont be available if the network gets shutdown. What if the PSN goes down for good on PS3? I cant redownload any more of my games? THAT I PAID FOR?? WITH MY OWN MONEY? I own over 300 games I acutally paid for on my PS3, not counting the PS+ freebies. What happens then?
So yea...... That's what I think anyway lol.
@sajoey Not really, cuz Microsoft has it when you pop in ur compatible 360 Disc, it will start downloading the WHOLE game to your HDD. and not from the Disc. From their servers. It could have been the same. PS2 DIgital Games on PS3 could be updated on PS3 and Transferred to PS4 as well.
And in order to play said downloaded game, you need the disc in the system at all times. It doesn't play the disc, just uses it as a verification. ony has done this on PS3 already if slightly different. Look at Assassins Creed Revelations, or Tekken Hybrid. They both have Games on them that must be installed to the hard drive. They don't show up as actual disc icons. They still need the disc to be played as a verification method. So they have done it before.
Nobody forcing you to re buy games. You can re-download them as many times as you like, on your PS3. NOWHERE did it state when you bought those games digitally or on a disc for said console that it would work on a future console. Plain, and simple.
