At this point, if Nathan Drake comes out of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End on crutches, we're going to be disappointed. Naughty Dog's been teasing the fact that the protagonist's going to snuff it for years now, and this brand new CG trailer continues the trend. The video was shown in cinemas this weekend prior to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but now sci-fi disparagers can enjoy it.
There's not really a whole lot to say about the clip. We get a remixed Pixies song as Drake discusses how he'll be remembered. It's a slow-motion job, with the stubbled star diving to save brother Sam while the world collapses around them. A nice mood piece, then, but if the developer dares to back away from the conclusion that it's been building up to, there'll be hell to pay.

They can't back out now. He's got to go, IMO.
I think its a mareting trick. Showing people a possible outcome might lure them in to buy Uncharted 4, because now they really want to know how this will end.... well... at least, thats what i'm trying to talk myself into i'd prefer a happy ending
I don't think Drake dies but Sully is toast.
@get2sammyb Can't see Sony killing off their most memorable character in a long while. However I'd be more worried about Sully or Elena. Possibly even Sam.
@stevie85 They've got to, bro. They've got to now.
@get2sammyb if they were going to kill drake, I don't think they'd advertise it. I mean why spoil the ending?
@get2sammyb They don't have to do it. They're just trying to make us believe they'll do it. It's just marketing. They have to hook us somehow.
While I do prefer a happy ending, I know they'll do what they feel like.
I do not want him to die and would be happy if he survived the game. I am not sure if this is the end of the franchise or not but can not see another lead character for the series if it were to continue. He is too young to have a son old enough to take on the lead role in another game.
From reading the article is it implying that people want Drake to die? I have not heard a lot of people wanting that so not sure why there would be hell to pay if he lives.
I'd have to say it's a marketing tool. We all are being led to believe it's our final goodbye to a beloved character. Personally I'd love a more open ended did he or didn't he end. We would be able to theorize as much as we want, and ng could move on from the franchise for x amount of years leaving us to believe he's done. Then, during the ps5 announcement, BAM! Drake voiceover "they thought I was gone, that I wasn't coming back" boom, uncharted 5, launching day one with ps5.
As much as I would like to watch the trailer im not going to bother. I prefer the good old days of wait and see. I saw far too much of Destiny, The Witcher 3 and Fallout 4. Not going to bother anymore.
From now on, when I get a game it will be 100% unseen footage. Only thing I will check is the review score and just skip the review read.
Oh and if anyone dies, it will be his brother, which makes Drake hang up his hat.
@ztpayne7 This is what I thought.
If Drake was going to die at the end of U4 then ND have done a great job of ruining the ending for us. In fact I won't be happy if that how it does pan out.
@get2sammyb This whole "Drake's death" thing reminds me of Tomb Raider 4 when everyone thought Lara was dead after that ending... Maybe ND is inspired by Croft. =)
I don't want Drake to die.. Just let him live happily ever with Elena after the game concludes. I almost expect Sully to die, and I don't want him to go either.. 😩
@WARDIE Fallout 4?
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi I just meant that every site was covering it none stop.
@get2sammyb My wife and I have been watchign a TV show called Arrow for the past 4 seasons, and almost every major star has died at least once, and they are almost all back alive now. So sure, Drake could die during the game, and probably will, but he'll be resurrected by the end. Maybe something as simple as CPR after drowning, maybe a big needle to the heart like in Pulp Fiction after some villain has given him an overdose. But he will probably die, and then he'll undie. Did you guys get "White Collar" over there? A great tv show for 6 seasons, the main star dies at the end. Maybe. Maybe not. Could see a similar ending happening here, faking his own death so "the world thinks I'm dead." It's an old cliche', but a good one.
@WARDIE yah, twas, I always try not to watch too much gameplay until near launch, 1 or 2 trailers is enough.
@rjejr I'm now the 'green Arrow' a totally different dude?? No. I thought that bit was hilarious.
I feel like if they show Drake's finger twitch at the end or something like that, it's a cop out. I'd honestly feel letdown by Naughty Dog. If they're going to kill him (and maybe they won't), they better bloody kill him for good.
Such a cop out when you've got Solid Snake shooting himself off-screen and stuff. Finish the job or don't go there at all.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi The whole show is kind of hilarious, I liked it better in season 1 when Thea was in and out of her private high school outfit. Though compared to Flash, Arrow is Master Chief, Flash is Mario. Nathan Drake is and always will be Captain Mal Reynolds. And neither will die for long.
@get2sammyb
Endings like that are done for a reason, be it films or video games.
That look like the ending of Last Crusade to anyone else?
@rjejr I thought season 3 was very good, my favourite so far, all the league of shadows stuff was great
I only read the headlines and I feel I've already read a spoiler from Uncharted 4.
@Splat oh no not sully!
Reminds me of the Kokanee ranger
@get2sammyb this is how I think it's gonna play out... opening scene/level will show Nathan Drake willingly going to his "supposedly" impending doom for whatever reason, making that rather bravado speech! Then the game will be like 1 week before and lead up to that moment, so your playing through it all thinking he's a goner and wanting to know the how's and why's! Then the end will catch up to that point and by some miracle, act of God, grace from another etc he will actually survive it! I don't think Sony have it in them to kill a flagship character like Drake imo! Just my own thoughts on it!
So the surprise won't be that he dies, but that he actually survives! Because we're led to believe throughout the whole game that he's gonna be killed off!! Like a double twist scenario or whatever! Think that's a plausible option!
That'd be an ending to Unchared that I don't want to see actually. The series while being more 'mature' than past ND games has always been a bit light hearted as well. This one already seems to be more dark than I'd like it which is the main reason why I wasn't a huge fan of the switch to Druckmann and Straley, as talented as they are at their craft. I'd honestly be more disappointed by a death ending than all of them making it out alive. A happy ending is good too.
I don't particularly want him to die. As long as the story is good I could deal with it though.
just went to see SW this morning but it didn't have the game trailer. doh. guess only the weekend.
Of course they're not going to let him die! This is just like the Halo 5 commercials where Master Chief supposedly is the bad guy. Funny btw that a lot of those new skool Sony kids would rave on about MS "lying" to people in their advertisement... Wondering if they'll complain about Drake not dying. When ND does it it'll probably be a stroke of genius how first his own brother betrayed him (didn't see that coming), but at the end sacrifices himself for ol' Drake, terminator 2 style.
(If you didn't cry you officially don't have a soul)
@Boerewors
I didn't understand the complaining about Halo 5's ads, I have a lot of problems with that game's campaign but it wasn't the advertising that p*ssed me off the most. It was that the ads and the freaking podcasts were better and told a more interesting story and as much as I tried to convince myself otherwise, the more I played, the more I realized the campaign didn't even have compelling gameplay or level design. Of course, Halo is also not 343's franchise, I don't care what anybody says, it is and always will be Bungie's creation. 343 and the people in charge have proven time and again that they simply don't 'get' Halo and 5 highlights that. The one thing with Uncharted 4, even if I don't care for the darker tone, is that it's still Naughty Dog and Straley and Druckmann did work on Uncharted 2 so they know what makes this franchise tick. I'm sure the game is going to be epic either way but I'm rooting for the happy ending.
@Gamer83
Going with a more TLOU'esque tone would really peeve fans off, but I must admit I am a bit worried about that. With Neil and Bruce kicking out Amy right after the unexpected succes of TLOU, it feels they're not okay with the series ending with a happy-go-lucky story. UC3 didn't quite live up to most people's expectations, but that could easily be mistaken for the audience wanting something else, something darker perhaps. They should definitely go for the happy ending, Batman style, where everyone thinks he's dead but Sully sees him drinking a cocktail in the Carribean and when their eyes meet they only give each other a polite nod.
About Halo: 343 is simply trying to hard. The game is so solid, it's everything a shooter should be in my book, but the Bungie heritage is dragging it down. Bungie told a pretty shallow story, but one all people could understand with pretty universal sci fi themes, 343 wants to show how hardcore they are and they simply dig to deep. I for one liked it, simply because I play Halo for its mechanics, but it's a shame that people write the game off simply because of 343 trying to hard to be Bungie.
@Boerewors
Uncharted 3 was doomed from the start because it was following up one of the top 5 games of last gen (for me a top 3) in Uncharted 2. Like Wind Waker was always doomed because it was the next major Zelda release after Twilight Princess (I know there was Majora's Mask but that at the time wasn't given the same push Zelda usually is). Uncharted 3 did feel a bit rushed though and prior to the patch the gunplay was way off. Not a bad game by any means but there was just something about it that kept it from reaching the upper echelon.
I don't want to comment on Halo 5 too much more because I've ranted about it enough on a PS website but I don't think it's a matter of 343 trying too hard as much as it really is they simply don't get it. They should be able to nail the gameplay. It's an FPS and Bungie laid the foundation, if 343 didn't have people talented enough to even get that part right, after all the money MS has invested to create the studio, it would've been the biggest waste of time ever. But taking a former bada$$ in Master Chief who was already an established character and making him an emotional trainwreck. Taking one of the most loved characters and turning them evil going against everything said character once stood for and then throwing in some sneaky agenda-pushing lines of dialogue is not trying too hard, imo, it's simply dumb as hell. As Halo is, or I guess I can start saying now, was, my favorite franchise. I want Bungie back on it in the worst way.
@Gamer83
I feel that especially that female director wants to show how into the lore she is, the problem is that she doesn't think like the target audience, but wants to dig deep not only in the lore, but also is MC's psyche. In the books and series there's absolutely a place for that, in the games not so much, especially when it's not really clear which direction you want to take it.
I really digged UC3 in the remastered version, where I (unfairly) boo'ed it away when it launched; it indeed had to live up to 2, which was made even more impossible by the fact it had to be rushed out, something ND really seems to regret. As it stands now I really like UC3 and I'm not even sure UC2 is still my favorite; with UC2 their job was far easier, but if you forget about the early problems, I feel they nailed it in 3 under far harder circumstances. In the end that's all a matter of taste of course, but I do hope the conclusion will be in line with the series; we already have the excellent, but humorless Tomb Raider, so I want UC to be what it has always been.
@Boerewors
Yes, I love the Tomb Raider reboot and Rise of the Tomb Raider but they don't let Lara have any fun at all. That's the only part of those games that really disappoint me. There has to be a way to balance that better in the future, if we even get another one. I'm concerned after the pitiful sales thanks to SE's incredible stupidity. I've seen enough in some of these demos for Uncharted 4 that I expect the humor to be there. My concern is if it will lose that halfway through the game and become a much darker game with a very disappointing ending. I don't think ND has an easy job here either but no excuses, they need to nail this one. It's PS4's biggest exclusive for 2016, even if I am looking more forward to Horizon Zero Dawn (which still isn't a guarantee for next year).
@Gamer83
Tomb Raider is awesome, yet I didn't manage to finish it because Xenoblade took over my life. But if TR was more balanced, with some humor, I think I would have waited with Xenoblade. Gameplay wise though I think it's better than UC in many ways. Going timed- exclusive was so dumb, although the game is so good I'm sure PS gamers will eventually pick it up no matter how angry they were; and don't forget that 90% of the customers probably doesn't even know nor care.
I don't think Horizon Zero Dawn will see the light of day in 2016 either. Our European office is pretty close to Guerilla's and I know quite a few people there and although we hardly ever discuss development, I did have a chat with an employee the other day about when they would want to see it launch. We both kinda concluded that 2016 would be very hard, just because of how jam packed with goodness it is. It can't launch close to Uncharted and in October/ November is out of the question as well being a new IP. The summer window, more specifically June or September, would be perfect were it not for PSVR which he and I expect around that time.
Like I said, we almost never discuss development, but what I do know that they should be ready in 2016, because they've been working on it for an immensely long time now. The pre- development "study" (art, lore, research etc) was completed about 5 years ago and as far as I know development didn't start much later. I actually remember being in their office with a big chunk being locked away from the rest about 4 years back and I figured it was KZ related. I tried sneaking in a peak at the back, but the windows were blinded, so I'm positive that they were working on Horizon back then.
For me that's my most anticipated game too, by far actually! It feels so new, yet familiar in a way and it's an IP I had an instant click with. I might be tired of big open worlds by then after all the goodness we've been getting lately, but I feel that their approach to the open world will keep me coming back; it has different "monsters" which you have to approach Monster Hunter style, it has loot, it has crafting and it has a vast world to explore. I'm hoping for a MH/ Diablo/ Dark Souls hybrid where every aspect keeps me coming back for more, not just loot or exploration.
@Boerewors
With the annual releases like Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty as well as getting Street Fighter V, Uncharted 4, Ratchet & Clank and potentially Horizon or maybe a new God of War, and probably anyother big third party release, I'm not sure PS4 owners are going to have time for a year late port. The game is excellent and I agree most casuals probably don't care, hell many probably don't even know, about the timed-exclusive nonsense, but the game is just simply not going to sell. It's up to the PC elitists to save the franchise.
Interesting stuff about Horizon. I can't say it's my most anticipated by far because Uncharted 4 is a game I'm really hyped for as well but I do get that Monster Hunter, mixed with a little Xenoblade vibe from Horizon. It doesn't look innovative by any stretch of the imagination but it does seem like it will be awesome. Hopefully Guerilla brushes up on its story telling. Like the studio a lot, it's a master of visuals and has created great worlds and lore for its franchises and I love the gameplay in Killzone but the stories in the games have left much to be desired. I will gave credit where it's due though, I thought Killzone 2 hit the right notes all the way around. As good an FPS as I've ever played.
@Gamer83
I got this huge "coffee table" art book as a gift from one of the Guerilla people once with the Killzone lore in it. They actually had it on their site for a while as well, but they've taken it down for some reason. It's a magnificent looking book, but at first I kinda chukled about the combination Killzone and lore, but I wanted to read it anyway, more out of respect than anything. It blew me away! The Killzone lore is so fascinating! I couldn't believe that the games I played and the lore I read were part of the same universe, it's so incredibly rich!
Ultimately they had to decide against making the story to deep, I feel underestimating the average gamer, because people wouldn't want that in a FPS. If we take Halo for example, just like the guys at Guerilla did, we see Bungie did the same, yet they extracted key parts from the lore which spoke to people and had a hero people cared about, where Killzone's stories are not compelling at all.
I hope this time around they make sure they get the transition from book to game right because they put so much effort in the background story. It has to translate into the game in a way that everyone can get it, but without the lore feeling dumbed down. I hope most of the story will reveal itself as we progress in the game, kinda like in Dark Souls. I wouldn't be surpirised if the game takes place after "the Great War" in the Killzone universe, the war that almost wiped out humanity. It wouldn't be of much importance, but a nice nod to KZ, the game that made them what they are today.
@rjejr What TV show or movie is that picture from?
@ToddlerNaruto
Serenity (movie)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379786/
It's a good movie, you should check it out.
Kill him off then make more uncharted games as Sam with a different studio.nl Naughty Dog can then deliver us something new. I think TLOU should be stand alone title.
It all seems to obvious though - they're building it up so much that there's got to be more to it. My suspicion is the metaphorical demise of his adventuring days - think he'll realize (probably tragically) that he has too much to lose if he keeps it up. There has just got to be some serious heartache in here somewhere though and definitely still a possibility that Nate will bite the dust. ARGH, the tension....
Uncharted 1-2-3 were absolutely brilliant, a real Saturday Matinee rollercoaster of fun, adventure and thrills with engaging characters, outrageous but addictive story; action packed and humerous trailers which whetted your appetite for more. And now we have Uncharted 4 which gives us anxiety and despair about which of our much loved heroes is going to kark it - F*&%ing brilliant! What bunch of morons thought this was a good idea? Talk about murdering a great storyline.
@notdead @ToddlerNaruto You can't simply say "Go watch Serenity" without mentioning the 14 episodes of Firefly that precedes it.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0303461/?ref_=tt_rec_tti
I always knew that movie name would bite them in the butt someday.
@rjejr Oh d'oh, how could I have forgotten XD. I should re-watch Firefly and Serenity one of these days.
@ToddlerNaruto I was thinking the same thing.
@Boerewors
And the Batman:Arkham knight ads "This is how the Batman dies", if anyone dies it'll be someone very close to Drake (I am not going to say who).
I think it makes a lot of dramatic sense to have him die. I'm tempted to say it'd be my preferred outcome. That said, it's also a depressing way to end the story. An alternative way is that he finally gets a load of money from his adventure and retires a rich man. That just sounds too cheesy, though, too much like it's just a daydream Drake is having.
I think the best option would be that for some reason he has to fake his own death. We see him die, the bad guys see him die. Then for a bit we play as his brother. Drake could be revealed to be alive either in the finishing scene, he's sitting on a private island somewhere with Elena, or it could be revealed through gameplay as he saves the player (as his brother) from something. I think that'd be a great moment.
But yeah, the fake death thing has the benefit of being both a sad and happy ending, of giving that dramatic punch without depressing you. It also signifies closure like an actual death would; Drake really has settled down now, he's a new man.
Also, I can't believe US cinemas got that trailer before TFA. We got a Clash of Clans advert.
@TheMightyPunram @Matroska I see where you guys are coming from but the style of the Uncharted genre usually has the guy saving the day / finding the treasure and getting the girl. I know we live in this post-modern era of sabotaging genres and conventional narratives etc, but Uncharted has too good a story arc & engaging characters to screw up. Having Nathan killed off - especially after being married to Elena - really?What happens to her? Are the writers simply going to sideline her trauma and grief for the sake of the "OMG Nathan dies" marketing ploy? How callous and insensitive would that be?
@TheMightyPunram
There's plenty of games with a dark tone these days. Uncharted's light-hearted tone was nice and helped it stick out a bit from the crowd. I don't see how going The Last of Us makes it better. Just make a TLoU 2.
@TheMightyPunram. @Gamer 83 I remember when we used to play Uncharted for fun and came online to rave about the story, characters, graphics, gameplay, co-op and multiplayer - now look what they've gone and dragged us into.
If it ain't broke--
If those guys were so desperate to go all heavy duty, they should have done a spin off of TLOU rather than hijack Uncharted for their kicks at our expense.
If they want to take Uncharted in some more 'serious' direction, they'll in all probability, split the fanbase as is being done here. Shame really.
But they'll get their free marketing presence and web coverage, problem is at what cost? I'm more than happy to wait for the reviews and spoilers before deciding - and I suspect quite a few fans will do the same.
@TheMightyPunram. That car chase scene is epic.
There are numerous weaknesses in what we know so far: Nathan Drake in an office shack sorting out paperwork before the brother he thought dead turns up? Really? He'd arrange for and set up that kind of job as part of married life? Somehow I don't think so. I suppose Elena has hung up her news camera and is now doing cute baby and family photos in between baking pies and ironing. And dialogue choice? Did we even have that before? That's like breaking the fourth wall.
The big thing for me is Nathan having an older brother. For me that's just wrong. It fractures his identity. On one side he is subordiate to the older sibling yet at the same time has, as far as we know him, the greater range of knowledge and experience since big brother was otherwise confined. His brother couldn't have been busy doing similar things, Nate would inevitably know about it.
Using the brother as a ploy to get Nate and the gang out on one last adventure carries too many risks. Sully wouldn't drag him away, and woyuld happily call it a day anyway if Drake wasn't in a space to join him. Only way that would work was if Sully life was at risk - same for Elena - which is too lazy a conceit for as gripping story. So, brother ploy is strong option but with risks to emotional balance of characters. Besides, how many big brothers would be willing to sacrifice a younger brothers entire life for his own needs? I'd expect a big brother to have a bit more integrity and honour than to burden a younger, married brother. If Sully was there he'd punch the guy's lights out and send him on his way to sort out his own problems.
But that's okay, we are expected to 'want' Nathan to go off and get back to what he does best because we are shown how frigging boring and dull his life has become. I just don't buy it
@TheMightyPunram. Fingers crossed then.
@TheMightyPunram, No, that's fine, I didn't intend to be rude or anything. I was just being brief about things. You're right about patience. I hope UC4 does turn out to be a great game, It's just that the big picture of what we have so far... well, let's wait and see.
