Imagine playing one of the Uncharted games. Imagine an opening cutscene in which series protagonist Nathan Drake wanders into shot, and he looks like the sort of guy you'd love to punch square in the jaw. Okay, so maybe you don't like the cocky explorer in the first place - that's fine - but you can't possibly think that this particular prototype mug was a good idea.

Looking like a sort of annoyingly animated Dreamworks character, Drake used to be a douche - there's no other way to say it. He was less wily and more stone-jawed; less suave European soccer player and more stereotypical American football quarterback - and we're so glad that he didn't end up on our television screen.

According to The Verge, this Drake was loosely based upon the face of Johnny Knoxville - except Naughty Dog wasn't quite ready to let go of its more cartoon-style visual design that's present in titles like Crash Bandicoot. Needless to say, we're thankful that the studio adopted a more realistic approach when it came to finalising the characters of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

So, what do you make of the roguish treasure hunter's earlier form? Is he a hunk or is he junk? Try to erase his overly smug smile from your mind in the comments section below.
