Dead or Alive PS4 PlayStation 4 1

Dead or Alive is fundamentally a fighting franchise, but the property is perhaps more famous for its beach-based spin-offs. Those of you with particularly long memories may recall Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball on the Xbox, which kitted out its cast in teensy bikinis and tasked them with playing everyone's favourite Olympic game on sparkling sands. A sequel, Dead or Alive Xtreme 2, was later released on the Xbox 360 which added jet-skis and other mini-games to the mix. And then, of course, there was the voyeuristic PlayStation Portable entry, Dead or Alive Paradise.

But you may need to brace yourself, as it sounds like a new instalment is in the works. Speaking during a fan fest overnight, series producer Yosuke Hayashi admitted that Team Ninja has just started production on a brand new idyllic adventure. Platforms are unannounced at this point, but given the buzz surrounding Bandai Namco's similar Summer Lesson, we'll be surprised if it isn't compatible with the PlayStation 4's forthcoming Project Morpheus headset. And we'll be even more shocked if it actually makes its way to the West – after all, we can already taste the controversy that this is inevitably going to create.

Update (23:30PM BST): As expected, Team Ninja doesn't appear to be planning a Western release of this new Dead or Alive Xtreme title. Writing on Facebook, it said: "We announced DOAX3 (Working Title) today, but it will be made exclusively for Japan and Asian market." Good thing the PS4's region-free, eh?
