Not even EA Games can resist empire interference: the first details pertaining to the hotly anticipated Star Wars: Battlefront have leaked out hours ahead of its full PlayStation 4 unveiling – courtesy of an Associated Press report. The write-up – which confirms the 17th November release date revealed yesterday – outlines the footage that we're about to see, including its multiplayer mode.
"In a demonstration of the game's multiplayer mode, a team of jetpack-equipped rebels were shown carving their way through the woodsy Endor while Stormtroopers charged at them on foot, on speeders and within walkers, including a hulking AT-AT war machine," the publication cites, adding that shoot-outs will host up to 40 players at a time.
The report continues: "Other locales teased in game footage included the snowy Hoth, sandy Tatooine, and gooey Sullust, a lava-spewing planet referenced in 1983's Return of the Jedi, as well as many Star Wars games and novels, but rarely ever seen." As rumoured earlier in the year, you'll also be able to take to the field as iconic characters, such as Darth Vader and Boba Fett.
"You can storm in as the Dark Lord himself," design director Niklas Fegraeus supposedly told Associated Press. "You can wield a lightsaber. You can Force choke the rebel scum, which is fun. Basically, you are the boss of the battle. This means that you, as Vader, can lead your team to victory – if you play well."
Of course, the action will also take place in the skies, with TIE Fighters, X-Wings, and, excitingly, the Millennium Falcon all viable vehicles. "We wanted it to feel authentic to this universe," executive producer Patrick Bach added. "There's a wide range of vehicles that we wanted to realise. The difficulty with a game is that they need to be balanced with the troops on the ground."
The report concludes that a free expansion will be available prior to the launch of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which will allow you to experience the Battle of Jakku – a conflict that's mentioned in the new flick. We'll bring you all of the news from the Star Wars Celebration unveiling later today. Don't forget to join us for the livestream.

Well this really shouldn't be news to anyone. In all the previous games, the MVP of the team is offered the chance to play as one of these legendary villains (or heroes) and do some real punishment to the opposing team. Also, let's not forget the game mode which pits heroes and villains against one another exclusively, without the foot soldiers anywhere to be seen.
As stated above this is a staple of the series to play as well known Star Wars heroes and villains.
Edit: When is the livestream?
@Jazzer94 @Azikira And what about all the people who have never played a Battlefront game?
hold on, EA, Free expansion???? EA....FREE, nah since when did EA do something that's consumer freindly?????
Ugh. I'd really prefer new cool dudes and chicks to play as, relying on old established characters could lead to a pants story as there isn't any effort made to build up any anticipation. Oh now im playing as so and so, whoopee.
@ShogunRok I don't see a problem mentioning it in the article but would say the up to 40 player battles is more noteworthy of leading the article then playing as Darth Vader/Boba Fett.
@Jazzer94 Sounds like we've found a new editor.
@ShogunRok I feel like I'm probably conveying this badly, I'm not saying the article is bad (or trying to be an "editor") just that the piece of information given the highest importance isn't the most interesting titbit out of what was mentioned.
I'm so excited to preorder this game, just waiting for Gamestop to make it available.
Looking forward to the Jakku part!
@ShogunRok "@Jazzer94 @Azikira And what about all the people who have never played a Battlefront game?"
To them I say, SHAAAAAME! No, but seriously, it's been a pretty big part of the formula since the get-go. I wasn't trying to undermine the article in any way, just seemed an odd thing to make a big deal about to me.
@Azikira Honestly this is a big deal especially with a new company taking over the series. I was wondering myself if playing as the Heroes (and Villains) was going to return and I am glad this article was created to confirm it. I mean yeah we can assume it would but with a new company you never know.
Also @ShogunRok makes a good point I am sure there are plenty of people who never played Battlefront, the last entry came out during the PS2/Xbox/GC era, there are plenty of people who never owned any of those and began gaming on a PS3/360/Wii.
Any way let's keep the comments about the game itself and not on how the article is written.
Didn't darth die? I agree with @Bad-MuthaAdebisi we need new characters. The original star wars film from the 70s was my favourite film as a kid. The only time I have relived that feeling since was in knights of the old republic and that game was set 1000 years before Darth and luke.
@themcnoisy If this Battlefront is like the previous two you play the major battles from the original trilogy so Vader would still be alive.
