The writing's been on the wall for a little while now, but with our hands tied by a publisher imposed embargo, we haven't been able to say a whole lot about The Order: 1886 – until now. Fortunately, we can finally tell you that, despite being one of the most visually impressive releases ever made, Ready at Dawn's debut PlayStation 4 project has some sizeable problems. Of course, that's just our opinion – but do other critics agree?
Push Square - 6/10
The Order: 1886 is an antique that's aged ungracefully. The presentation is sublime from the release's rousing start right the way through to its anticlimactic finish, but several shoddy design decisions detract from its otherwise exemplary gloss. The developer's crafted an incredible universe, but outside of the title's core cast, it's failed to do much of note with it. This is a property that's begging for a sequel to realise its undeniable potential – but only time will determine whether it gets that opportunity.
IGN - 6.5/10
The basic conflict at the heart of The Order: 1886 is that considerations for a cinematic approach are prioritized above the needs of basic gameplay. Its best aspects are its stunning looks, atmosphere, and style – which are truly fantastic – and entertaining fiction. But the shallow, slow, and generic quick-time event-riddled gameplay make it feel like an experience that would've been better served by a non-interactive movie than a game. With no multiplayer, and no reason to revisit the short and stunted single-player campaign once it's been completed, there just isn't a lot to it.
Polygon - 5.5/10
Galahad's story, such as it is, concludes so rapidly and with so few loose threads tied off, it's hard to shake the feeling that someone somewhere decided that it was time for the knight and his cohorts to get out into the world whether they were ready or not. Though it nails some of the fundamentals, The Order: 1886 has been released without answering the essential question of what it offers that other games aren't already doing better . Everything about the game's final shot screams "sequel set up," but unless The Order finds some non-aesthetic reasons to justify its existence, it's hard to imagine coming back for a second adventure.
GameSpot - 5/10
All of these gameplay tropes are then shoved together into herky-jerky levels that end just when you think they might gain momentum. The only individual sequence lengthy enough to find a rhythm is a later stealth level, though it's far too simple to inspire wishes for more sneaky sections. What, then, to make of The Order: 1886? It is, at best, perfectly playable, and lovely to look at and listen to. But it is also the face of mediocrity and missed opportunities. A bad game can make a case for itself. A boring one is harder to forgive.
Giant Bomb - 2/5
There are things here worth checking out, but the action feels half-cocked and you'll be finished with it in an afternoon. I won't pretend to guess at how much $60 means to you, dear reader, but I will say that The Order is a middling experience with a couple of bright flashes that only serve to remind you that this could be a more interesting game if more of its ideas were fully formed. If you're bent on seeing The Order for yourself, you should probably rent it.
Has this spate of sorry scores forced you to reconsider your interest in The Order: 1886, or are you going to go ahead with your purchase regardless? Dry your eyes in the comments section below.

God damnit, I'll still play this but it might take a side seat to Majora's Mask 3D.
Who knows though, I liked Knack and Sonic: Lost World, so this might be up my alley.
LoL. DoA £20. Right choice. I'll be spending my weekend playing DoA, Farcry 4 and PS Vita. Nevermind.
Knack and Killzone all over again =(. And yet garbage like Dragon Age 3 has nines and eights.
Had a feeling this was coming. Shame, as it had real potential too. Oh well, saves me some money this month, which is fine by me as I'll be picking up FF-T0 on day 1 next month!
Im going to play the game before making statements but its looking like I will be a vocal advocate for people NOT to buy this game untill its $20 or less. Such a shame because I love the premise and setting.
Well damn what a bunch of bombed reviews! And here i thought they were going to make this game as long as uncharted. ..wow sounds like they were All for visuals and less about the story! might be snagging this when the price drops. ..but i think blood-borne will def be less disappointing!
Funny how you ignore Dualshockers and gametrailers reviews
and at the end it was what some of us (someone called us haters) thought it was...
Yeah, what the above guy said, there's eleven reviews in metacritic that have given it 8+. What gives?!
@Gemuarto dragon age 3 is garbage?
@AhabSpampurse you'll always find some reviews that gives 9 and some that gives 5.... what matters is the median and the general comment... which mainly constist of "a boring, short and not very replayable gameplay in a stunning presentation" everywhere you look
Honestly I was never sure about the game in the first place ,as I was on the fence. The almost universal panning confirms that I'll be saving my cash for something else. More than likely the Master Chief Collection and DoA since they're fetching for so cheap.
@Sir_JBizzle actung... Master Chief Collection is still a broken game.... I would wait if I was you....
Combined between mixed and negative there 26 reviews that fall into that category, and 18 that fall into the positive. I still feel that that warrants mentioning at least some of the reviews that fall into the positive percentage, considering that is still a good chunk of positive attention.
@arnoldlayne83 that's a fair comment. The last time I was in this position was with ZombiU. And in that instance I still bit the bullet, bought the game and had a blast. I'll give it a go, at least then I'll be in a position to give a valid criticism
@arnoldlayne83 thanks for saving me 25 bucks! I didn't realize it was still broken all these months later... Though to my knowledge that was just the online portion. Is the single player campaign a mess as well?
There is a difference between underrated and boring.
@AhabSpampurse Agree with you, for a complete overview they should also report some positive reviews (but then also some very negative one).
And about ZombieU.... ... for me it is still one of the best game on the platform and one of the few (together with rayman legends.. kudos Ubi) that showed us how the gamepad can be used in a great fashion!
The order 1886: I'll give it a go too, just to have an amazing tech demo to show to my friends (the game looks gorgeous), but I'll wait to get it for 20$ or less...
@arnoldlayne83 I know right? The reason why I haven't replayed it is because of how scary the whole experience is.
Please watch the language -Tasuki-
@Sir_JBizzle I don't own the game, (i don't own Xbox1 either), but just a couple of days ago I read about 343 canceling an online beta test for some patch on whatsoever broken part of the game... and it also seems they admitted they will never able to fix completely the game.... If I was you I would collect some more infos before spending your money there....
@AhabSpampurse ehehehhe I know I know.... that game is scary! Stay away from Alien Isolation then...
@Sir_JBizzle the single player is touch and go, largely it functions but when it does screw up, like with saving progress or forcing you to repeat lengthy sections in order to snag a completion achievement, it can be quite deflating.
@arnoldlayne83 I'm about two thirds in, and its been that way for a while now! It must be my age, I lapped up scary games in my youth, but now I find it hard to stomach all the constant tension!
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi That's what I've told, didin't I?
@AhabSpampurse Ahhh thanks for that!
To jump in on the scary game debate, I'm the reverse. My age has gotten me quite numb to horror. It's hard for me to get scared as much anymore. Zombi U did a very respectable job creating tension, as did what I've played so far in The Evil Within. I've heard pretty good things about Ailen Isolation, so I may have to go with @arnoldlayne83 against suggestion and pick it up
Though the one game (If you can really classify it as such) that really got me was that PT demo. I played for like 45 minutes with lights out and headphones on. Never touched it since. Haha
@Sir_JBizzle What I can say about Alien Isolation is that is amazingly good in creating a constant tension (after the first hour of "introductory" gameplay") that rarely leaves you.... You have not so many "jumpscare" moments or prolongued gunplay.... It is more the feeling that the alien is out there stalking you and that you can die every minute that makes it so tense... I never felt such things in a videogame before...
@Gemuarto huh. I would disagree. Its a solid 8 or 9 all day long.
@arnoldlayne83 I'm not sure why I glossed this one over then (other than my ridiculous backlog) Sounds like an insta-buy! Looks like I found where I'm going to burn my extra cash.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi Good for you.
@arnoldlayne83 I completely agree. I made the mistake about halfway in of thinking I was partially safe as I got my hands on a flamethrower. Suffice to say I was punished for my hubris. Severely.
@Sir_JBizzle As far as I know the MP of Halo MCC still has issues and 343 are working on an update but no date given. They cancelled Beta Testing of those updates and are now stress testing them in house to make sure they work. I haven't heard about any issues with the Campaign though. I haven't installed mine.
I know its a bit off topic but its better to have correct information.
Back on topic, Is it any surprise that Dualshockers would score this higher? Gametrailers probably liked it as its basically just a 5hour gametrailer
@arnoldlayne83
For multiplayer, yes. But many of us just want to play the 4 campaigns, which are flawless. Same reason I disregarded Far Cry 4 and Dragon Age criticisms- because I just wanted to play the campaigns.
@Sir_JBizzle
I own it- he's right about the online. Still hard getting into matches. The single player campaigns however, are flawless. Me, I don't do the online thing for shooters, so the game is perfect as far as I'm concerned. Really just boils down to whether you want to play the campaigns, or play online.
Judging from the reviews, this is going to be kind of like Uncharted. The first one was okay, but then the second one will show up and be a serious GOTY contender.
@JaxonH like you, I spend most of my time in the SP campaigns with shooters (obviously with Destiny and Titanfall being the outliers) So that's good to know. I still may get it sometime before the sale ends. Thanks.
Seeing you respond reminds me I still need to pick up FE: Awakening. Haha.
Sorry I got this comment section so far off topic, guys! Lol
@SkywardLink98 The first Uncharted was pretty great for the time it came out..I don't think this one is "great" it's "meh".
Today is a bad day...I just feel sad for this game
so glad i waited for the reviews 😍
so glad i waited for the reviews 😍
No reviews will stop me from trying this game. But at least it lets me temper my expectations.
@Gemuarto You're talking complete rubbish. I've never been a fan of the Dragon Age games but Inquisition is such a good game and easily one of the best games this generation.
It was clear to me a longtime ago that the gameplay in The Order was the week point.
Leave out all the higher reviews... This is absolute garbage... there were quite a few sites that scored it 8 and even 9 out of 10
