This should go down well. According to a report by Nielsen, the PlayStation 4 is selling like hotcakes due to "better resolution". We know, we're not exactly sure what to make of this, either.
The publication quizzed consumers on what aspects of current-gen consoles they found most attractive, while in the process of purchasing their new machine. For better or worse, the PS4's ability to seemingly output games at a better resolution ended up being the most mentioned feature. "Blu-ray player" was also high priority, as was "game library".
We suppose it just goes to show that the internet's mumblings do indeed reach the ears of the average consumer, and can, according to this survey, become the driving force behind someone's purchase.
What do you make of this? Why did you put the cash down for Sony's newest console? Please don't start a war in the comments section below.

I bought it for the light on the controller
I honestly bought it for the brand, I always liked PlayStation and I wanted to jump back in
I own a PS4 and a wiiU, I probably would have put the PS4 money into a PC if it didn't have infamous to be honest.
I bought it for the............say something funny say something funny Hummmmmm Oh who am I kidding I bought it for the 1080p resolution @ 60 fps games that the PS4 can rock that the X-Turd One can't.
BluRay and amazing games, to me. And Wii U for Nintendo stuf! Xbox...nah.
BluRay and amazing games, to mee. And Wii U for Nintendo stuf! Xbox...nah.
Ummm, they buy it over the Wii U for resolution? Blu Ray I can understand, but the Wii U has some great looking games running at 60fps, such as Super Smash Bros. For Wii U and Mario Kart 8, that's not to say the PS4 doesn't have good looking games, it just surprises me that the Wii U can handle 1080p 60fps yet resolution is a reason that people buy a PS4 instead.
Regardless of peoples' reason for buying the PlayStation 4, I am glad they chose the PS4 over the Xbox One & Wii U
We have every console except the WII U, I chose the PS4 as it had more game's especially if you take into acount the F2p's and game's like FFXIV the controller's and network suck but it's by far the best out of PS4 and xbone. APP's and mp3 playback, blueray and all that I don't take into acount but thats just me, I dont care about them, my ps4 is for gaming. On a side note i'd love a gaming PC but I have a medium/large family so there's always something more important to spend the money on ;P maybe in a few years...
Performance in games is important but I personally bought a ps4 because it was more powerful than the xbox one and cheaper I also really enjoyed my ps3 the last few years with games like uncharted, God of war and the last of us ps4 seemed a solid choice
I bought the PS4 because I already had a Vita and PS3 and Playstation Plus.
Another deciding factor was for remote play with the Vita.
That and I thought the Vita would work like the Wii U Gamepad.
After all on the PS3 Guacamelee had a Second Screen feature where you could see the map.
I also thought that with remote play that you could get rid of split screen multi-player. I was thinking 1st player on the TV and the 2nd player on the Vita.
Instead the Vita ended up as a extra controller until I bought more and remote play that I rarely ever use.
However, I still don't understand why they have not released the Android Remote Play App for all phones and Market it to sell more PS4's.
@SlicingScyther Well even if the resolution is the same between the PS4 and the WiiU, the graphics won't be as good. I think when most consumers say "resolution" what they're actually thinking of is "it dun look gooder." The people on a site like this are a relative minority in terms of the overall number of people who game. Most are not nearly as informed and get more info from word of mouth, often from their no-more-clued-up friends or local news stories.
I bought a ps2 for mgs2, then bought a ps3 for mgs4, and then I bought a ps4 for mgs5. Duh...
My mighty gaming PC is strictly for Bethesda Studios and The Sims.
Playstation generally has the exclusives I want the most. I limit myself to One console and my PC, every generation. Can't afford to enjoy gaming too much.
It doesn't matter what you play on as long as you enjoy it.
@SurvivorOne hahaha yeah the ps4 is just brimming with games at 1080p 60fps... oh wait. Nope. You need a pc for that. The odd game reaching 1080p 60fps isn't really much of a seller to me. Most games have to pick 1080p or 60fps and for some odd reason most of them seem to pick resolution. When I want to play games as gorgeous as they can be I play them in 4k on my pc. Otherwise I play my ps4 and Xbox one.
I bought the PS4 for the games. Same reason as for my purchase of the Wii U and XBox One. And they all deliver me 1080p games.
The way Sony handled the pre launch period was a factor plus the wallet friendly price compared to a launch PS3.
The last factor was games, Sony exclusives plus all the multiplat games that will not get released on the WII U
I'm surprised people keep going on about "60fps" as a lot of games can't get that on either ps4 or x1, DriveClub 30fps, GTA V 30fps, they all promise "60" but when it comes to the punch they still can't handle it! I brought the ps4 over x1 because Microsoft pushed me away at E3 with all the "there will be no way to play second hand games" this will be locked that will be locked, you can't do this and that..... Then when they realised it was all a mistake and started going back on things that's when I started looking at the PS4's E3 show and it blow me away so I pre ordered the PS4 straight away and haven't looked back since. Plus a lot of my friends started thinking the same and they ended up on ps4 as well, I've even had 4 yes 4 friends sell there x1's and buy the ps4 later on as they just didn't like parts of it, the chat was one of the biggest moans I heard from friends how you could only chat with friends playing the same game.... Come on Micosoft why fix something that isn't broken?!?! But hey here I am on the ps4 having fun and reading all the moaning still about 60fps lmao
I bought it because I've always been Playstation since the PS1 when it 1st came out...I've never had a reason not to be. I wanted to be able to continue following franchises I've loved through previous generations like Uncharted and God of War. I can't say resolution was ever a thing for me, despite places like Eurogamer making such a big deal of tech comparisons.
@Midzark Your friends are wrong. You can chat with friends regardless of what each of you're playing.
I went with the PS4 first because it was the only console that looked next-gen. One of the best looking devices I had ever seen. I wasn't bothered which system was the most powerful or had the best games as I was always going to get the XB1 too.
@WARDIE so is that a patch that has been added? I don't know, maybe I shouldn't of added that in as I myself don't know, just went from friends
Killzone!
I bought the ps4 becease the wiiU didn't sell well and I wanted to play games and since most of my friends owned either a ps3 or ps4 and the fact that xbone wasn't available in the netherlands I choice for the ps4.
Simple reason is I have purchased playstation throughout and I enjoy the brand. I was a Nintendo man until swapping to a PS1 after the N64.
Love how this thread has largely become about frame rate, despite the fact that it's mentioned nowhere in the article, and in most of these cases doesn't come into it. The average consumer probably couldn't even tell you what frame rate is - the people they are surveying here are by and large going to be your average joe who's buying because somebody has told them PS4 hits "full HD" on games where the XB1 doesn't. It's as simple as that. It shouldn't be, as there are many many reasons to choose PS4, but it is!
Doesn't bother me one bit at the end of the day though. People can buy for whatever reasons they want to, it's all more return for Sony at the end of the day, and if that means a better gaming experience for me down the line then that's fine by me.
I have both the XB360 and PS3 but opted to upgrade to the XB1 first due to financial reasons. I managed to pick up an XB1 (Kinect version) with 4 games for £400 - at that time PS4 was around £380 with at most 1 game. I also had a Season Pass on XB360 that transferred onto my XB1 saving me £40 on buying it again and I had a years worth of Gold too. Also at that time XB1 had more exclusives I wanted (Dead Rising 3, Forza 5 etc and Ttanfall due out compared with Killzone and Infamous due out). The cost to get the equivalent on PS4 instead was around £200 more - 3 extra games, a years PS+ and a Season Pass... Also things like additional controllers are cheaper on XB1. As you can see my decision was purely financial.
It has always been my intention to get a PS4 too and now I have both. Like I said I had both previous gen consoles too and the reason is purely down to Exclusives - not just the console exclusives but also the 3rd party deals too. I always bought CoD on Xbox for example but I bought BF3 on PS because of a free BF1942 and the exclusive early DLC. Owning both also enables me to get the best deal on multi-platform releases - buying whichever is cheapest - I know generally they are the same price but often in sales you find certain games cheaper on one console. With the GwG and PS+ free games as well as the weekly deals you often find certain games cheaper or available on one system that cost more on the other.
To me Resolution isn't that much of an issue. The games look incredible on either system. It not like the XB1 looks last gen. Gamespot recently did a blind test of graphic comparisons and it just proved that people can't see much of a difference side by side. You certainly aren't going to notice when engrossed in playing - at most the only time you are likely to notice is if both are side by side and you are not 'playing' but looking for the differences. If resolution was the most important factor, then I would be gaming on PC's! The only game I have on both systems is Destiny and it looks identical! I am not denying that in some games, things may look a little sharper but that doesn't change the way a game plays or the story line. As far as I know, no game has a better Frame Rate on one console over the other. PS4 maybe running at 1080p/60fps and the XB1 maybe running at 900p (upscaled to 1080p)/60fps but the frame rate is still the same.
I know each to their own etc but I personally couldn't pick 1 console over the other definitively and give up the benefits of owning both. I know its possible to build a gaming PC for little more than the cost of theses consoles at launch if you compromise on certain areas but lets be honest, the average cost of a gaming PC that can last the duration of the life expectancy of these consoles is likely to cost a lot more than the amount I have spent on my consoles...
I buy(stick with) the PlayStation Brand because of the brilliant games SONY give me each Gen That is it really. Oh & i can't stand Microsoft Nintendo are cool tho(got a N64)
I bought a ps4 because its way more customisable then the ps4, the console os slimmer and sexier and the online subscription is just a lil bit less. But i have both consoles. Ps4 is better than it tho
I bought a Ps4 as it's the only next-gen system that seems to have any potential this time around. I was actually still rocking a HD-ready TV when I bought the system and didn't get a 1080p set till a few months later. Resolution didn't make a difference for me (although I appreciate it more having a 1080p set now)
@Midzark You mean the party chat system? Aye you can chat to others on different games, even different system. I was playing Warframe once on Ps4 & chatting to a few people playing Killzone on PSVita
Is it the resolution, or a higher number to brag about?
I could not care less about that, I want great games and between resolution and FPS I will choose the latter.
I've always been a Playstation fan since part-ex'ing my Sega Saturn to get a PS1, since then owning the PS2, PS3 and now PS4. I did have a Xbox 360 at the same time as my PS3 to play the games that were exclusive to the 360 but unfortunately it died on me. I do plan on getting the XBox one in time for the exclusives that are not available on the PS4 but my wallet is not big enough at the mo........I'm in it for the gaming and a non subscriber to the fan boy clubs in both camps..... they are both great machines to me
I'm in the minority- I'm a gamer who buys consoles for one reason- to play games. All that other nonsense means little if there's no games I want to play.
When it comes I games, I like them all. There are many multiplats I like to play, as being on both PS4 and X1 I had to choose. Since both share the same library, I went with PS4 for better frame rate/resolution and (at the time) lower price. So yeah, it was a factor but only as a tie breaker with another system that had the same games.
But I like other games too. I bought a Wii U because there's games I want to play on the system that are only on that system. I bought X1 for the exclusives on that system (since I play the multiplats on PS4).
So in the end, it's always about the games. Resolution is just a tie breaker between two systems with the same games, assuming you actually want to play those games in the first place.
@mitcHELLspawn Yeah I agree PC is the gold standard and I've often thought about getting a gaming PC, but not knowing enough about the enter workings of them or how to assemble one myself or which is best. I've stayed with the console which of the two available I feel PS4 is far superior !
@SurvivorOne yeah I was in the same boat about 6 months ago. I decided I wanted to learn because there were a bunch of games on pc that weren't anywhere else that I was really wanting to play.
I've got to admit I made a few dumb mistakes along the way that I could have avoided if I had of learned more before buying and ended up spending more than I should have but in the end it was a great experience and I ended up with an absolute beast of a pc. I have dual gtx 980s for my graphics cards and can play practically every thing in 4k resolution. It's pretty awesome !
I can Imagine it is. I sure wish there was some place where someone wanting to known how to build a gaming PC could go. Or there was someone with the knowledge that gave out information online. I known there are some gaming PC that are already build but even then I have no idea which one of them is the one to have.
I'm a PlayStation baby so I'll always go PlayStation! My first game was Test drive of road PS!, good times.
Bought mine for the truck reason. I trust that, like Sony's three previous home consoles, the PS4 will have a massive variety of software combining everything third party and a healthy selection of exclusives. It certainly has the first of the two with the exclusives on the way.
It also has the Remote Play option which as a Vita owner I make good use of. PlayStation Plus was a factor too. When I bought my PS4 in August I already had A stash of games to tinker with.
I also have a Wii U which, while hindered by Nintendos awful business decisions, has some superb software. The PS4 and Wii U compliment each other perfectly. This is the fourth generation where I've bought Nintendo and Sony.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi Revelations 2 would like to dissagree, and by quite a decent margin
I won an Xbox One from Mcdonalds at launch. Sold it unused for $550, then bought my PS4. No regrets, love my PS4!
I don't own a PS4 yet (still too expensive), but I'd want one because I've been playing PS games ever since I got my PSOne Slim on Christmas 1999.
That and it has the most games I care about.
Not surprised you didn't publish the list of the top 5 reasons given for each console... It makes ps4/ xb1 owners look pretty dumb. Basically boils down to Wii U owners base their purchases on video games, PS4/ XB1 base their purchase on the belief that it makes them better than the idiots who bought the other console...
I bought my PS4 essentially because the 360 was unreliable. After going through multiple RRoD on 360's, I switched to PS3. When the time game to upgrade, I was already invested in PS ecosystem as PS3/ Vita owner...
