How long has it been since you got your last legendary engram in Destiny? A few hours? A few days? At the rate ours tend to drop, we reckon that it's probably the latter. Nevertheless, if you're desperate for some good gear, YouTube channel Force Strategy Gaming has worked out a loot farming exploit that should be able to nab you plenty of glowing orbs within just 15 minutes.
If you want to check out the technique in detail, be sure to click the above link, but if you just want the basics, allow us to explain. There's a cave in Old Russia near the area where Hive and Fallen enemies are usually doing battle, and inside this cave is where many of the former tend to spawn. All you need to do is stand a reasonable distance away from the entrance so that you don't interfere with your foes' spawning, and mow them down at every opportunity that you get. With a little luck, the creatures should drop a quite a haul of glorious engrams.
Are you willing to exploit the game for some precious loot, or are you against such practices? We reckon that people wouldn't be looking into such measures if Destiny's loot drop rate wasn't so disappointingly low, but you never know – Bungie might find it in its heart to tweak it in the future. We'll beg if we need to.

I bagged me some legendary stuff for getting to cryptarch level 5 and 6, also from getting to dead orbit rank 2, accidentally wasted crucible marks on a cruddy emblem, there seem to be a few decent emblem and chest farming locations. The crucible does dish out the odd purple engram too.
Since the loot drops are complete garbage, I wouldn't feel at all bad about exploiting this. Days and days of playing and nothing good to show for it
it really hasnt dropped much legendary loot for me. A few blues but mostly greens.
The one legendary I did get was for another class entirely -_-
Personally, they need to tweak the loot drops across all sections of the game. It feels way too grind heavy for such a small pay off.
Well the loot system is fine for me i've got a lv 25 hunter and a 27 titan both have legendarys AND exotics, so no complaints from me. Hopefully this doesn't come across as showing off i'm just trying to show that it does work, not everybody suffers. Don't be put off by the wingers please it's a great game, i've only met one person in game that is unhappy (and i've met loads) the only place i've seen unhappy people is in the forums.
I really don't mind getting drops for different classes as it means I'm not going to have to grind for my new classes once the hit lvl 20
The possibility of getting green(uncommon) and blue(rare) items from purple(legendary) engrams is just plain stupid... This along with a disappointing main campaign are the two things I hate about this game. The cooperative and multiplayer modes are great though, they're the reason I'm still playing it.
I did this in three 30 min sessions...I didn't want to farm but I spent days at level 22 and with the help of doing this I'm half way to level 25. I got a lot of blues...one legendary (that turned into a ******* blue item when it was decrypted) however one of the gifts I got for going up cryptarch ranks turned out to be a shiny legendary helmet for my Hunter. The fact that every legendary engram I've gotten so far but one devolved to a blue or even a green(!) makes me ok with exploiting this.
I could't care less about the exploit, i just hope people get caught and the items taken away. If you play the game right you don't need exploit's, if you cba'd playing the game though exploit away, knock yourself out.....
I think we can all agree that the loot drop rate needs to increase quite a bit. The supposedly amazing endgame Bungie wants everyone to try currently involves sitting in front of a cave and shooting low levels enemies for 20 minutes at a time.
It's ridiculous.
This obviosly isn't the right kind of game for you guy's, you should play something else.
@xMEADx I very much doubt any of the gear we got doing it will be taken away and it's preferable to grinding for endless hours waiting for a legendary engram that turns into a green item when it's decrypted. I didn't want to farm but I also am not spending my free time doing the same incredibly repetitive things with very little reward. The end game of Destiny sucks and if I have to sit outside a cave with four other people shooting for 30 mins and get engrams that way just to get to a level to play the Vault of Glass and finally get something new to do I will.
Pro Destiny gamers keep saying embrace the grind, it's part of MMO games...well so is farming items.
Knock yourself out, it bothers me not at all like i said I could't give a Munkeysnut Its just surely you would rather be playing something else? Rather than spending hours sat outside a little cave shooting low lv mob's because that's the only way you can get epics. That doesn't sound like fun at all if you ask me but each to there own. If that's what you have to do then i suppose you gotta do it. I might even stop by in my almost full legendary with 2 exotic pieces level 27 with a midgets todger until 28 Titan and have a little dance with ya now THAT sounds like fun.
One of my legendary engrams turned into a warlock exotic coat when I got it from here
@xMEADx Yeah....not that you're bragging or anything. And how much time did you spend playing to get that gear? Must have been a lot or you're luckier than most Destiny players. I spent an hour and a half farming to get to where I needed to be rather than endless days doing the same stuff over and over. So how exactly should the game be played? You're clearly a master at it, do tell us?
Yes loot is horrendously bad, I've ploughed at least 50 hours into the game, its took me about a week at level 20 to get anything decent, farming for lots of rubbish blue engrams is okay as you'll increase your cryptarch level and receive legendary engrams as bonus, I'd also suggest farming spin metal and trading it in for marks, I'm with dead orbit, the crucible does chuck out purple now and then. So far I've got just legendary armour, an Exotic autorifle, legendary rocket launcher and scout rifle, pretty happy so far... now I bagged these goodies, autorifle is my chosen crucible gun and scout is my chosen missions gun.
I'm sorry to hear that you don't have enough time to put aside to play the game. Does this mean that all games have to be catered around the need's of the unfortunate souls that only get an hour to play each night though?. If you can find the time, try to hit the weekly cap in both the crucible and vanguard and if your reputation is 2 then you can get all 4 armor slots full legendary in one reset.
@Bad-MuthaAdebis I've played in excess of 70hrs and every legendary drop I got turned blue or green and it feels like being cheated, as does hammering at a hard or very hard level strike and getting nothing as a reward. I'm with dead orbit as well and I've been getting a few good items from the crucible, but the total randomness of that can feel like an insult to you're efforts too...at least it's only 10mins or so per match as opposed to hours in a strike playlist.
@xMEADx It doesn't matter how much time you have. I put over 20 hours into Destiny just over the past week, and I got almost nothing to show for it. That's not good design, and if it keeps up, it's only a matter of time until people start shelving the game because they feel like they're not being rewarded as much as they should.
One of the first rules of an enjoyable game is that the game must reward the player. Destiny's not all about loot, sure, but at the end of the day, that's what's making you complete countless strikes and continue playing once the story's over.
@xMEADx I like many others have a life outside of gaming. The free time I do have isn't going to spent grinding patrols and strikes in Destiny for the small chance of advancement. But wow....aren't you a blessed fellow? Unusually high success at getting good items without being a 'cheater' and the luxury of plenty of time to game....should we all start lining up to bow down to you?
So let me get this straight. You do have free time but not much. Your not willing or able to put more than an hour and a half aside to farm. BUT you still want all the goodies and will cry and complain until you get them. I don't think this is the game for you guys, you should play something else, its not broken, its just not your kind of game. Just answer this, why dont you just play something else?
Something you have time to play.
@xMEADx We enjoy the game — it's great fun — that's why we play it. The problem is we get no rewards for doing so, which is ridiculous. The loot drop rate is insanely low, and even when you do get something, you're not guaranteed that the engram will be decrypted into anything good.
There's a huge difference between liking a game and being critical of it. If you see no flaw in Destiny's loot system, that's fine, but it's clear that many, many players have serious issues with it. If it was actually any good, people wouldn't bother with exploits like this in the first place.
@Munkyknuts Im the same, loads of purple gone blue and even green.
Farming has the benefit of helping raise the cryptarchs level and it does sometimes give good stuff.
On topic: It isnt really cheating or exploiting though.
All you are doing is killing enemies which is the basis of the game to earn xp and gear anyway, not glitching or botting or using any other bad practices.
Besides, you cant just do it indefinitely, as the game starts making triple hard enemies spawn all over the ace after a while.
Also this website shows the decrypt rates and they are horrendous!
http://www.lazygamer.net/xbox-360/is-destinys-loot-system-unfair/
Whos idea was it to make purple able to go green?!
@xMEADx lol you're a bit of a tool, and an arrogant one at that....personally I'm done interacting with you.
i just had enough of this game, i got up to level 24 and it´s no longer fun for me, i put it in the shelf yesterday, i,ll finish playing METRO redux
But thats what you have to do in these type of games, play for hours and hours with the chance of winning nothing, that is exactly what attracts people to these kind of games. They have tried to please everyone. They have made it so you dont have to farm, you can be full legendary armor slots in less than 2 weeks without having a single drop and be playing crucible to get weapons. They even gave everyone an exotic one to be getting on with.
Haha bless his Munkeynuts someones stolen his dummy :<
@xMEADx Why then in D2 and 3, Borderlands 1 and 2 and the like do the drops happen a lot more frequently yet dont detract from the gameplay?
What exotic one?
@ToOGoodOfAPlaya Personally I think it was put there on purpose to be farmed....there Is the ramp shaped structure placed exactly where you need to stand and if you stand there shooting too long the fallen and the hive go mental and start pouring our in every direction....I don't see it as a cheat.
@Munkyknuts nor me.
I like the escalation, tons of enemies constantly getting harder.
Annoying to get loads of purple that just turn junk though!
The purple I've picked up have been around 50/50 hit n miss, I did get an exotic from a purple though too, probably nabbed around 8 purple engrams and 3 turned worked out, I don't know it its the case but my cryptarch level is 6 I believe, maybe this helps?
It's either when you max out your ability tree or after you hand in so many bountie's, you will get an exotic bountie the reward being an exotic weapon. Everyone gets one, also there was a weekend vendor in the tower selling exotic armour for 13 strange coins but he's gone now i'm not sure when he'll be back
Just to add i got given a second exotic bountie today so i'm not sure 100%, little things like this make these games awsome
@Bad-MuthaAdebis The best gear I've gotten was from building up the cryptarchs rank and getting the rewards package he sends. But I got his rank up by farming blue engrams to do so.
@xMEADx Friday morning to Sunday morning he's there, xur, trades motes of light for exotic engrams, also trades materials for coins.
I recall actually I also had an exotic armour but it was warlock class so I dumped it. I'm sticking with hunter.
@Bad-MuthaAdebis Ive heard it does, the higher level the higher chance. Mine is 7 and is almost guaranteed blue now, so it must do something.
Ive had 15-16 and got 2 hunter armours and a warlock one!
@xMEADx Im maxed on abilities and handed in 11 bounties earlier, 5 from yesterday and 6 today and I am yet to recieve one.
@ToOGoodOfAPlaya Damn unlucky :< I noticed one in my mail when I maxed my abilitie's and one earlier today I thought maybe i'd handed in the required amount or something. @Bad-MuthaAdebis Thats great ty was worried it was once in a blue moon.
@xMEADx Thats the problem, its luck based.
The only reason I have got to 25 is by upgrading my armour.
That I can no longer do as I dont have the ascendent shards.
I have done every Vanguard bounty every day since launch too.
Thats strange your honestly the first person i've spoken to that hasn't had one, that suck's i feel bad for you :< Maybe theres more? I thought everyone had one.
I also wonder how often legendaries drop in the crucible, some matches I've played well in dropped a few (only to be decrypted as blue rare items )
@xMEADx a friend of mine has had one. The loot system needs tweaking anyhow, take out that crap about legendary engrams going to uncommon items.
Doint have enough strange coins or motes yet either.
Yep no exotic bounty.
I've also had my problems with the loot system I have to admit, i'd say i've had 13-14 legendary enagrams and had only 4 legendary's 2 rocket launchers , a heavy machine gun and a hand cannon all the others were blues/greens. I just dont have a problem with that, I suppose if we all agreed on stuff it would be boring >.< Really sucks about the exotic though maybe you'll get one soon, I don't know what to say about that :< i'm going to go and play a bit now anyway's, good luck
Has anyone got rare ship engrams already ive found 3 i didnt know you could find ships
@xMEADx It hasnt stopped me playing!
Id personally prefer a lower drop chance but guaranteed legendary.
Or at least a higher chance to get what youve essentially earned.
@ToOGoodOfAPlaya I've never done any crucible bounties only vanguard and after handing in the five bounties I completed today I've just gotten my 1st exotic bounty. I want the exotic Pulse rifle but I've no idea if it comes from any of the three bounty missions I've just been given the option of: a dubious task, Tolands legacy and a light in the dark. At least I've finally gotten something new to do. Good luck getting an exotic bounty soon
*update...the requirements to get the pulse rifle (in Tolands legacy) are a b*tch... Oh well
@salcal2122 I got a rare ship blueprint from a chest on the moon.
Yea i got all mine in silver chest
I got lots of rare ship blueprints nothing sparrow yet, I just accidentally dismantled my legendary scout rifle oh well, still got my exotic autorifle. Got a purple warlock boots from a blue engrams, cryptarch level really does help.
Yea it does help ive got the crypatch guy to level 10 already
@Bad-MuthaAdebis I haven't had a single ship or sparrow (apart from the one from the golden chest) at all.
But I got the limited edition which came with a legendary ship and ghost shell, so don't know if that plays any part?
On that note, are there any other ghost shells?
Bottom line is that a rare endgram should give you at the very least a rare item with maybe a possible chance for something higher. NOT LOWER! What was Bungie thinking??
I've picked up three legendary engrams so far doing this and countless decoherant engrams, unfortunately they only rewarded me with rare items. The best thing about this farming method though are the rewards for upgrading your cryptarch rank. I only have one legendary item, a scout rifle (not my weapon of choice), and this is how I obtained it. You also get glimmer and maybe a couple of strange coins too. To those who say it's cheating, I would counter by saying its grinding, but with a higher success rate than standard play.
I got purple from blue so it is possible to get higher too
I personally don't mind the grind since I'm an avid RPG player and I personally love the "grind" element but i know thats just me. I feel it really gives me a true sense of accomplishment since I had to spend a good amount of time to acquire what little I've got so far.
Last night I did the magic cave location and it went into hyperdrive. When it got to the point of the enemy flooding out everywhere we were able to blockade the cave mouth and fire into it as the enemy spawned in it constantly to bursting point....the farm had already gone well but at least three legendary engrams dropped there in a matter of minutes. One of my fellow farmers got two purple engrams within seconds of each other.

I recorded it but I've no idea if a link to my FB will work here?
@chazaroonie I agree that the rewards from the cryptarch are awesome...I've gotten legendary engrams from that location and a lot of blue and getting them unlocked made my rating with the cryptarch shoot up, and the best gear I've got came from the rewards he gave out. I've got Legendary helmet, chest plate and boots for my Hunter, but I've got no purple weapons. I don't see farming an area that I believe was put there on purpose as cheating. Farming is as much a part of MMO games as grinding is.
I got my first exotic bounty in yesterday, and the requirements to do it are tough but at least doing it gives grinding some more purpose now.
@Bad-MuthaAdebis It's true that the info for the blue engrams says legendary drops are possible from them, I've gotten it once...but it was a warlock helmet and I'm a hunter.
@Munkyknuts I had the same problem, for warlock boots for my hunter dumped.
I have maybe 50 hours in Destiny. I put maybe 3 in the treasure cave. Currently; 10 legendary engrams from the treasure cave in 3 hours, 0 legemdaryvengrams from story/strike/crucible. Hard choice to see why this is done by many.
@xMEADx Except that the drop rate is based off a RNG so there's nothing to "play right" about it. It's random. You can't be "good" at random. If the drop rate was brought up by even a little bit then people wouldn't even want to do this
@xMEADx Why is your only suggestion to answer the mounting outcry of not only casual but dedicated destiny players issue with the loot system...to stop playing the game at all? That's at best, lame. Your suggestions as to what should work (since it by your own word alone has worked so well for you) is time and diligence. Well sir I play 4-6 hours a day. I played 54 hours last week. That's more time than I spent at work to make a living. I have received zero legendary drops that have not decrypted into uncommon or rares regardless of my light level, or my crypto level. If you can't offer any actual suggestions with specific insight into the woes of the masses with this game's loot system..find some place else to troll.
@xMEADx In video games, an exploit is the use of a bug or glitches, game system, rates, hit boxes, or speed, etc. by a player to their advantage in a manner NOT INTENDED by the game's designers. I'm willing to bet both my testicles that Bungie created every creature in the game for the ultimate reason of dying at the hands of a guardian this is in no way an exploit and anyone who referees to it as such clearly doesn't understand what an exploit is. Standing around waiting for mobs to respawn so you can kill them is not an exploit. if you were some how tricking the system into spawning them when they shouldn't spawn there at all or spawning them in larger numbers then originally intended by Bungie then you maybe able to call it an exploit but standing around in area where they set up a lot of mobs to spawn and killing them and then waiting for them to come back as Bungie designed them to is not an exploit, it is just farming. Exploits get your banned, farming does not. You should learn proper game lingo if your going to be playing them, even more so when writing about them. Wording like this could cause a lot of people to be in fear of getting in trouble when there is none to get into.
