There’s a chance that critical smash The Last of Us will get a sequel, directors Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley have revealed. Speaking candidly as part of a Reddit question and answer session, the talented twosome hinted that there’s a 50 per cent possibility that we'll be returning to a post-apocalyptic United States in the future.
“If you’re asking about a sequel, right now I’d say that it’s 50/50,” wrote a revealing Druckmann, who served as the creative lead on the core release and also its recent solo add-on pack. “Sony has complete trust in us. It’s really up to us to come up with something that will keep the team inspired for the next several years, which is why we don’t take the decision of what we’ll work on next lightly.”
The duo also took the time to reiterate that developer Naughty Dog currently consists of two separate teams, meaning that the people behind Joel and Ellie’s cross-country excursion haven’t necessarily turned their attention to Uncharted PS4 since concluding work on the horror game. As such, it’ll probably be a few years before we learn what the crew’s up to next. Alas, whatever it picks, we suspect that it’ll be good.

Well thats kind of good news for me as i enjoyed the first, but i was hoping for a new franchise.
It was pretty obvious from that Q&A as a whole that they genuinely haven't got a clue themselves if it'll be TLoU 2 or something else. There might be some brainstorming meetings going on every so often, but I think everyone's still burnt out on the game (and DLC).
This is the team that interests me more, though. Uncharted 4, while interesting and probably a system-seller, isn't anything hugely unpredictable, and the series much more easily lends itself to sequels than TLoU.
I hope it's not a new Last of Us. The first one was too vulgar for my tastes, so I'm hoping for a new IP.
Hoping for something like 20 years after The Last of Us with new characters and new story
@Jaz007 Vulgar? Please eloborate?
@N711 They said during the AMA that, if TLoU 2 gets made, it would have to be relevant to the original story.
i.e. They don't want to do "same universe, completely different unrelated characters"
@Sanquine It has a violence filter, but there is no filter for the atrocious language.
@Sanquine Loved the game and would play the second...but the cursing was pretty crazy in this one. Probably second highest I've heard in a video game (next to the first three hours of gta haha). So as someone who isn't a big fan of bad language, I understand where jaz is coming from. I understand there's realism involved, but it still seemed a bit over the top.
I never understood the problem with "cursing". It really is just words. For all we know, there could have been an alternate universe where "Bottle" is a Curse, and "F***" Isn't. Just imagine, haha who even said those were cusses in the first place? Were 2 guys just sitting around, making up words that people "shouldn't" say, but actually do say. I think there should be no curses, because if there is none, then kids won't go out of their way to say them, to be "cool".Parents, won't have to be scared to let their kids watch a PG-13 movie, in fear of the 1 F-Bomb rule. I dunno that's my two cents.
@Jaz007 Obviously everyone has their own moral standards and reasons to enjoy a given pasttime (not only gaming) or enjoy it not, but to me, your personal downrating of something like the Last of Us because of the language used is... odd. Especially since it never was out of context and I bet in a given situation like a cordiceps-post-apokalyptic-anarchic-police-state(where applicable)-world the last thing you worry about is anyone's foul mouth.
@Scollurio From whatever I remember when I read the gameinformer preview, they swore constantly and often used the F wore; the context was being able to talk. I frankly don't see how swearing is justified because of the situation in a game. It's no less real than in real life, so I don't see how a fictional situation makes it okay. So I'm not sure what's about odd about it, I find swearing offensive, and desire to play games without it's profuse usage.
I' wouldn't mind playing a new Last of Us after they release the new uncharted. That would probably be three or four years from now? I think by then I'll be longing for a new Last of Us
@Shellybird27 Nah, I think it's just an understanded kind of thing. It's like money being worth something. It's just a general understanding. If we never had this understanding, a dollar is just decorated paper.
I know that Naughty Dog will make the right choice on whether or not to make a new The Last of Us. They were planning to make Jak 4 before this, and they canceled that.
I still need to both own and play The Last of Us (PS3) myself, I'm just waiting for Naughty Dog to release their GOTY Edition.
@Toddler_Naruto it's probably worth the wait; there had better be at least one more sp DLC, two would still be lame for pass-holders like myself.
@charlesnarles I just dislike having to download DLC, I prefer it being on a physical disc.
Saving money is another reason too though, $40 GOTY Edition vs. $55 (TLoU is $40 now, while Last Behind DLC is $15).
@charlesnarles There are 2 multiplayer DLC and one single player DLC.
Given how well TLoU was received critically and commercially, I think a sequel is all but inevitable. Lets worry about ND getting Uncharted 4 out first though, hopefully it'll be this year and not 2015.
I'd like to see them work on a new IP while building up TLoU2's world/story in the long run. I'd also like it if they didnt make TLoU a trilogy and just end the masterpiece with one amazing sequel.
Either way, I would just like to see NaughtyDog continue making great games.
@Jaz007 As I said you're obviously totally free to decide what games to play or not to play for whatever reasons you see fit, I just feel like it's missing out on an awesome experience if you stay away from a game like The Last Of Us because of its language.
And the context thing, I meant that if my whole life is full of ... excrement ... and a constant struggle for survival and a system with a functioning educational and more so behavioral mechanic is out of place for a really long time already, people understandably tend to have a less than optimal wording when expressing their feelings I can imagine, at least compared to someone who might apply for a job at a bank in a normal environment. Thats how I meant that the swearing fits the context of the game.
You could go as far and say you're offended by games lacking some hygienic principles and seeing that in a game like The Last Of Us it's fictional inhabitants might have a less than ideal hygienic situation by often being forced to seek the nearest bush instead of a proper water-closet with functioning bathroom and fresh towels is still in context with the game world where as it might be proper offending in normal society taking a public dump behind a bush in a park for example.
That's all I am saying, I just wonder that if you're that much offended by swearing how are you handling real life? No radio, no TV, heck why are you even on the internet? Can you even pass a school area closer than in a 12 mile radius at all? Sorry, Im exaggerating and honestly don't want to offend you or personally attack you, it's just something I absolutely don't get into my brains, as for me, being "resistant to things I don't like or that offend me but I cannot change" is a vital skill in surviving in a more and more degrading, urban, consumation-focused capitalist society we live in.
Wow, that got out of hand...
@Scollurio I can deal with it in real life, and I do tolerate to an extent in entertainment, but I just like to avoid it in entertainment if gets too bad. It's one thing I can controll. I hope that makes sense. (and no worries about me being offended )
I don't think there's any excessive swearing in TLOU. Yes, there's certainly an amount of it, but only in context.
I swear myself and I don't object to it unless it's excessive. If it's every other word then it just gets tiresome, but in context and in the 'right' situations, one no problem with it.
As for TLOU2 - yes f#?king please!
@Jaz007 Fair enough!
@Shellybird27 Haha! Took the words right out of my mouth! I always loved the pathetic contradiction of people playing a game where they can blow a person to pieces, or chop his head off, then kick you from a game because you said a "bad" word. Good grief!
@Jaz007 I agree with you. Dont let anyone talk down to you for having actual morals. I skipped TLoU for the exact same reason. Im subjected to copious amounts of fowl language at work and on the street where I have no option but to endure it. So why would not only CHOOSE to hear it more in games I play but PAY to hear it too? So I chose not to. But unlike other here I dont look down on those who CHOSE to play it and were not bothered by it. Thats fine too.
For people saying swear words dont offend you, how do you express anger/frustration/hatred towards someone/something?... With words. Different words offend different people, but swear words (whatever they may be) are offensive by nature.
OT - With the trend in all media these days, surely a sequel is going to happen. Seeing as im yet to experience this first masterpiece, I'm in no rush for a sequel. However doing a back to back marathon of two games doesn't sound that bad haha
I dunno if this would be a good thing. I've always liked how Naughty Dog would move on to fresh IP's each generation, so to have Uncharted & TLoU possibly being worked on is underwhelming for me. Let's hope ND haven't been relegated to churning out sequels this generation
