Ellen Page is not exactly a small name in Hollywood. The inclusion of the Academy Award nominee in Beyond: Two Souls has prompted some to question the budget of Quantic Dream’s ambitious PlayStation 3 exclusive, but according to game director David Cage, the title has cost just €20 million (£16.9 million / $27 million) to produce.
That may look like an enormous sum on paper, but it’s a miniscule figure compared to Grand Theft Auto V’s dizzying $265 million (£170 million) budget. Granted, the latter includes marketing costs, but we doubt that the supernatural thriller will exceed $50 million (£31 million) with those additional expenses included. That should leave it in a good position to turn a profit.
In fact, the Parisian company announced earlier in the year that Heavy Rain grossed over $100 million (£62 million), making it a “very profitable” endeavour for the company overall. The game sold three million copies in total, a number that its spiritual successor should have very little trouble matching. Is the ghostly release on your wishlist? My most hyped for game this year. If its narrative lives up to its billing, for £17 million they'll be putting most of the Movie industry to shame nevermind its gaming siblings. With GTA5's reputed £170 million budget, it does make you wonder where the money goes on these big budget titles if Beyond's costs will only be roughly just over £31 million after marketing
@MadchesterManc Yeah, I'm impressed. From what I've read elsewhere online, Quantic Dream are wizards at budgeting, so that may be why the cost is so low. Just goes to show that you can make a cutting-edge game for a sliver of the cost, though.
Tomb Raider's budget was reportedly $100 million by contrast...
Someones very organised.
All I can think about when I hear her name is Trailer Park Boys, rotfl. I really hope she's in the new season
@get2sammyb 10 million? wow thats a lot
€20 million seems very restrained (while still be a huge investment). Here's hoping its an even bigger success than Heavy Rain and makes them a mint.
Certainly suggests that David Cage has some business smarts (i.e. a profitable business model). Can't wait for Beyond, and to hear what he has planned next for PS4.
@charlesnarles I can't believe there's also going to be a 3rd movie as well. I highly doubt she'll be in the 3rd movie or 8th season, but it would be nice!
Cheaper than I thought with the talent and visuals I'm seeing lets just hope there was a decent portion put aside for marketing Sony's weakest division! (It just is)
Oh is that all? I don't care how much GTA 5 cost, that was a mega-budget game, similar to a James Cameron movie. 27 million is a TON of cash to invest in one title! Granted, some indie games are running tabs of several million nowadays, so it doesn't really surprise me. Still, if developers would stop feeling the need to go super-mega-blockbuster with famous actors/actresses in every game, maybe the costs would come down a bit.
