It looks like SEGA Studios Australia’s last task before getting the boot will be to finish re-imagining Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse in glorious high-definition. Following a slew of rumours, SEGA has officially confirmed the remake of the Mega Drive classic on the PlayStation Blog, noting that the title will work its magic on the PlayStation Network this summer.
“Our plan is to deliver a fully re-imagined experience that takes advantage of the power of the PS3 with all new graphics and new adventures, while at the same time making sure that the game maintains the Disney magic that the original Castle of Illusion captured in 1990,” explained senior digital brand manager Mai Kawaguchi.
The remake looks legitimately gorgeous, with the action now taking place in a 2.5D world. There’s no word on the PlayStation Vita version that was originally teased in last week’s leak, but we’re promised more details soon. While you wait, feast your eyes on the first official screenshots and trailer embedded below.

The screenshots are gorgeous (a little too gorgeous, perhaps?). Either way, quite excited for this.
Awesome! They better confirm that vita version.
@Squiggle55 Unless it's still a way off, I don't think it's looking likely. Seems that the Wii U version has been abandoned, too. (At least, it's not mentioned in the press release.)
No replay on the blog yet about Vita... It is strange to abandon Vita (and Wii U).
@belmont Sadly, they probably don't think they can make enough money on those platforms. We'll see what the official line is first, though.
I. Want. This.
(and I want a Vita version even more.)
@get2sammyb Yes, they don't think it will be profitable. I don't get it though. If they target fans of the original Game Gear or Mega Drive versions they are likely to have PS3 but may also have a Vita. If you believe the developers it is super easy to port PS3 games to Vita.
Of course gamers have already asked for a Vita version in the blog. I want one too.
The way Sony and other game developers ignore the PS Vita is shameful. It's disgusting. This game could easily be ported to the PS Vita and we all know how powerful the PS Vita is.
I think this trailer could have used some.... uh... music.
Wow - very cool! Those HD graphics are so purty...
Vita version? I will buy this for vita , but i will hesitate for ps3.... Much better fit for handheld. No, i do not want it on my 3ds because after seen this screens.... This reminds me so of the first kingdom hearts in alice in wonderland
@Lionhart It's a vicious circle unfortunately. If the install base is too small, developers won't support the system. But without the software support, the install base won't grow.
Fortunately, there's a lot in the pipeline for the Vita.
@get2sammyb It's over 9000! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiMHTK15Pik
Damn, a remake of a classic Mega Drive game, I don't really see those that often!
Now let's just hope that treasure makes a remake of Dynamite Headdy sometime.
@get2sammyb I agree it looks good...to the point where it's distracting. :/
Well this has sparked my interest. I will keep and eye out as more info is released.
Mmm looks very nice indeed!
