In case you hadn’t noticed, the next-generation rumour rollercoaster is in full swing. Following on from last week’s Orbis rumours, VG247 has posted a report that claims Sony is “confident” its next platform will beat the Xbox 360’s successor to market.
According to the website, the “design goalposts” for the next PlayStation were set in stone at least two years ago, with Sony eager to rectify the mistakes it made with PS3.
An unnamed source said:
Sony are completely in the belief that they have the jump on Microsoft this time. You should be watching the timing of next year’s E3 keynotes, and who’s going to go first.
The insider explained that Sony has already informed top publishers about the platform, and that “most developers” will be fully briefed by the end of the year. More information is expected to be issued at a top-secret US event next month.
The report continues that there is some speculation Sony will utilise DirectX for its next platform as opposed to a custom Sony API. It has been strongly rumoured that the next PlayStation will not be based on the PS3’s CELL, but rather a more accessible AMD chip.
Allegedly, Crytek was scaling its technology based on the assumption that PS4 would be using a 24-core CELL processor (as opposed to the eight-core unit in PS3), but the CryEngine developer was forced to halt development and start afresh when it was informed that the next PlayStation would not use the CELL at all.
VG247 concludes that elements of the PS Vita’s launch hardware were tweaked before release in order to ensure that the device would be able to operate directly with the PS4 in a similar manner to the Nintendo Wii U.
As always, take all of these rumours with a huge pinch of salt. Things are certainly hotting up though, aren’t they?

I can believe this. I've always got the feeling that the PS4 is much further along than people think. Having said that, I'm not sure what advantage Sony's going to get from putting out its new box a few months earlier than the next Xbox, but we'll see.
Next Christmas could be a blood bath.
What interest me is their first party games. The reason why I got rid of my xbox360 is the lack of unique first party games. I love Halo, gears of war, and alan wake but the problem is that these titles are first person shooter or 3rd person shooters. For me game like God of War, Heavy rain, uncharted are different games for the PS3 and its refreshing.
@Kayoss My first-party launch window prediction: Uncharted 4 (Naughty Dog), WaterStorm (Evolution Studios), New Fantasy IP (Guerrilla Games), New Casual IP (Sony London or Japan Studio), New Action IP (Sucker Punch).
I would hang my hat on it. And I agree — discussing the console is always exciting, but at the end of the day, games are what count.
I am looking forward to the release of the next gen consoles . I have PS Vita and the idea I could use it with the console like the Wii U is to say the least tantalising . As for titles I would like to see a platformer with the humour of Jak and daxter but in a completely new universe with droids like C3PO and R2D2 as the characters . No copyright infringement please but you hget my drift . I enjoyed Ratchet and clank immensely but a new console should try and push it boundaries from the word go . Here's hoping . Fingers crossed
As long as the PS3 is still supported for 10 years like Sony said, I will be fine. I will probably wait a year or so after the PS4 comes out before I get it. I really just hope that the rumors about the used games are false.
@get2sammyb - I'm not sure about Uncharted. I'm a huge fan, and would love it... but historically, Naughty Dog don't bring a franchise from one platform to the next.
As for the console's release - I'm not worried about it being first, as long as it's better and they aren't more than something like 3 months behind. That said, there have already been rumours from neutral parties that the next PlayStation will be more powerful than the next Xbox, which is something I can believe, since Sony are always ahead on tech, and MS seem to be 'dumbing down' in recent years.
@Paranoimia I dont know if "dumbing down" is the correct term used. Xbox first party games are not stellar when compared to PS3 but they are good in their own rights. It seems that they are moviing towards a different direction, let say a combination of the PS3 as in term of an all purpose device and the Wii as games that are aim towards casual gamers. Since the Kinect been release, it seems that Microsoft stop making games for hardcore gamers. A lot of their first party games are now incorporate the kinect and casual gamers. Which is a bummer in my opinion.
Way too early for me to get into the rumour hype just yet.
@Kayoss Gears of War 3, Forza Motorsport 4 and Halo would probably disagree there.
