Can you save and quit in Returnal? Can you save a run part way through and come back to it? As part of our Returnal guide, we're going to answer your questions about preserving game progress, saving, and quitting. If you're looking for tips on how to stay alive in the game for longer, see our guide — Returnal: How to Not Die.
Returnal: Can You Save and Quit?
You can quit the game at any time, of course, but no, you cannot save a run and come back to it. From the pause menu, you can hit Restart Cycle to, well, restart at the Helios crash site, but there are no options to save or quit. The game does autosave as you complete objectives, discover items, and beat bosses, but not your current progress through a run.
What Happens When You Quit Returnal Mid-Run?
If you quit the game half-way through a cycle, that run will be lost. When you start the game up again, you will be back at the Helios crash site. You don't retain your current run if you close the game and then boot it back up.
How Can You Keep Your Run's Progress if You Need to Stop Playing?
Two words: Rest Mode. If you're half-way through a run and you're on a roll, but you have to stop playing the game, it would be a big shame to have to throw that away. Fortunately, PS5's Rest Mode will suspend any game you have running, meaning you can turn the console back on and resume where you left off. If you're super attached to current cycle you have going in Returnal, use Rest Mode instead of turning the machine completely off.
