How to Learn the Language of Niflheim and Unlock the Realm

You’ll need four Niflheim Language Ciphers to learn the language of Niflheim and gain access to the realm from the World Tree, which is the dome-like area in the centre of the Lake of Nine. You’ll also need to learn the language of Muspelheim to unlock that realm, too, and you can learn more about that through the link.

Niflheim Language Ciphers are hidden inside purple cipher chests which have a face as part of their lock. You open them like any other chest, and they can’t be missed.

All Niflheim Language Cipher Locations

Here’s where to find all Niflheim Language Ciphers in God of War:

Region Niflheim Language Cipher Chest Location
The Mountain At the very top of the mountain near to the Mystic Gateway named 'The Summit', cross the mountain pass and drop down the cliff to the left of the pathway. Scale the wall and you'll end up in a secret area with a Realm Tear and a purple cipher chest in plain sight.

Council of Valkyries In the area left of the Council of Valkyries, there's a dock point south of The Mason's Channel next to the giant goal statues in the Lake of Nine. Dock here and use your shock arrows to detonate all the explosive rock, clearing a path to the purple cipher chest on the beach.
Ruins of the Ancient The Ruins of the Ancient area is in the northern point of the Lake of Night, and there's a Stone Ancient that you'll need to fight here. The Niflheim Language Cipher is in a chest on the beach.

How to Retrieve All Treasure from the Workshop’s Center Chamber in Niflheim

To unlock the Darkness and Fog Trophy in God of War you need to retrieve all treasure from the Workshop’s Center Chamber in Niflheim. To do this you need to collect a currency called Mist Echoes, which you gather by running the randomly generated dungeon. The central chamber includes five chests and three Realm Tears – the latter of which comprise a supplementary Favor issued by Sindri.

Each time you enter Niflheim’s randomly generated dungeon you’ll earn Mist Echoes, but dying before escaping – either in the central chamber or returning to Sindri’s shop – will strip you of any Mist Echoes you’ve earned. This means that it’s essential you play patiently and cautiously, or you risk losing your progress entirely.

You’ll need approximately 68,500 Mist Echoes to open the five chests and three Realm Tears in the central chamber. While it sounds like a lot, you can farm these quite quickly, particularly if you sell resources like Mist Aloys and Breakdown Aesirbane to Sindri at his shop.

More challenging are the Anchors of Fog. Once you’ve beaten the Valkyrie in Niflheim, reaching the “end” of the dungeon will pit you against some very challenging enemies. However, beating them all will award you with an Anchor of Fog. You’ll need three Anchors of Fog (in addition to the aforementioned Mist Echoes) to open the Realm Tears and complete Sindri’s Favor. Once you’ve successfully opened the five chests and completed the three Realm Tears, you’ll unlock the Darkness and Fog Trophy.

In addition to Mist Echoes, you’ll need Anchors of Fog to complete the Realm Tears in Niflheim in God of War. You get these by reaching the “end” of the dungeon after beating the Valkyrie in Niflheim. You need three of them in total.

What’s the Quickest Way to Earn Mist Echoes in God of War?

To earn Mist Echoes quickly in God of War, make sure you’re selling any resources you find in Niflheim to Sindri. Items like Mist Aloys and Breakdown Easirbane can be sold off for a large injection of Mist Echoes, and will make it easier for you to retrieve all treasure from the workshop’s center chamber. Also ensure you’re opening all chests and completing any rune puzzles, as it’s these locked chests that net you the most Mist Echoes by far.
