10. Death Stranding (PS4)
Death Stranding is Hideo Kojima's first game after going independent, and it's a suitably crazy debut. You play Sam Porter Bridges, a delivery man in an age where the world has been devastated by the titular event. Charged with reconnecting a fractured United States, it's down to you to traipse across the land, delivering important supplies and hooking up remote outposts to a shared network. It's unlike anything else, with your biggest obstacles being the uneven terrain and fragile goods on your back. Online connectivity populates the game with useful equipment and structures created by other players, so you're all in it together. Death Stranding is an acquired taste, but its bonkers story and tranquil gameplay help it stand out.

9. Inside (PS4)
Inside is 2D platforming perfection, but it’s the ending that we all remember it for. After two or so hours of impressive puzzle-solving and hints that something isn’t quite right, the game goes off the rails with a 20-minute sequence that is perhaps one of the most memorable of the PS4 generation. An incredible game that has cemented Playdead’s position among the gaming greats.
8. DOOM Eternal (PS4)
Building off its excellent predecessor, DOOM Eternal is arguably the best first-person shooter on PS4. Phenomenal gunplay gives life to an arsenal packed full of mods, alt-fires, and weapons only the folks over at id Software could think of. With fast-paced action, plenty of combat arenas in which to experiment, and speedy movement, DOOM Eternal feels like a game going at 100 miles-per-hour, but you're always in control. One of the franchises which gave birth to the FPS genre is back on top form, and we don't see much topping it.
7. BioShock: The Collection (PS4)
BioShock: The Collection is just what it says on the tin: all three of the fan favourite games in one place, and remastered for play on PS4. The first is a true modern classic, introducing us to the unsettling undersea city of Rapture, while the sequels build on what it achieves in some very interesting ways. Each game places you in a fascinating setting that's in the midst of falling apart, and a mix of guns and powers make them a unique set of shooters. These are bold, unusual games that stand out thanks to their incredible worlds and subversive narratives.
6. NieR: Automata (PS4)
NieR: Automata's complete and utter disregard for your time pays off in so many ways. Yoko Taro's android-based adaptation of Hamlet may seem like anime schlock for the first 20 hours or so, but stick with it and you'll be rewarded with one of the richest narratives in games today. This character action title revels in subverting your expectations, and it crescendos with a mind-blowing climax that will leave your jaw on the floor.
5. Final Fantasy VII Remake (PS4)
Square Enix actually did it. It actually remade Final Fantasy VII, and the result isn't a complete disaster. In fact, Final Fantasy VII Remake is a fantastic action RPG. It may not cover the whole story of the original, but it greatly expands on characters, themes, and plot points included in the Midgar arc. Its crowing achievement is its outstanding combat, which blends real time movement and action with time-pausing command menus. It feels like the evolution of Final Fantasy's classic Active Time Battle system, and it's amazing. What a time to be alive.
4. Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4)
A role-playing game with action more fulfilling than most corridor shooters, Guerrilla Games’ heritage with first-person shooters means that Horizon Zero Dawn’s sizeable quest list is one you’ll actually enjoy clearing. The real surprise here, though, is the richness of the post-apocalyptic world that protagonist Aloy inhabits; this is a science-fiction story set against a tribal backdrop, and it marries these incongruent themes masterfully. An incredible effort from the Dutch developer.
3. Horizon Forbidden West (PS4)
With Horizon Forbidden West, Guerrilla Games had to deliver something pretty special to top the beloved first game. Fortunately, by improving on its weakest areas and tightening the design, the sequel more than lives up to Aloy's debut adventure. A huge, varied open world is home to not only brilliant new machines to fight, but also some of the series' most interesting and fleshed out human tribes. Between beautiful settlements, old world ruins, and natural environments, the world is a pleasure to explore with Aloy's new traversal methods. The main story manages to pack in some big surprises while the supporting characters and missions are vastly improved, and there's more than ever to do outside of some of the best combat in any open world title. It's, somehow, a better game than Zero Dawn in almost every way.
2. Astro Bot Rescue Mission (PS4)
Team Asobi has refined the potential teased in The Playroom VR with the staggering Astro Bot Rescue Mission, a virtual reality platformer spread across 20 fantasy levels. By building its stages around you in 360-degrees and stereoscopic 3D, the title manages a level of immersion impossible on a standard display, all the while delivering best in class gameplay and some of the most charming art you’ll find on the PS4 full-stop. A sensationally strong effort, and by far one of the best games on PSVR.
1. Mass Effect Legendary Edition (PS4)
It took an entire generation to actually happen, but Mass Effect Legendary Edition finally gives us what we've always wanted: a remastered collection of the original Mass Effect trilogy. Commander Shepard's sci-fi escapades still hold up, with a cast of excellent characters carrying a three whole games' worth of memorable missions. Legendary Edition does a great job of bringing some much needed polish to the first Mass Effect, while also adding a welcome sheen to its sequels. An absolute must for anyone who's looking to become absorbed in a spacefaring adventure.

Wow, for someone who has very limited interest in sci-fi, I have played a lot of the titles on this list!
Interesting! But…PS4, not PS5?
Doom 2016 and Titanfall 2 should be higher.2 of the best fps games ever made.word up son
Death Stranding deserves that number 1 spot, in my opinion
NieR should definitely be on top. It’s emotional on so many levels. I don’t think any other game has hit me this hard.
Also just started Mass Effect LE for the first time. I hope it still has impact in 2025, even though I hold no nostalgic feelings.
Hyper Light Drifter 😜
Props for mentioning WipEout Omega Collection (the thrill of "Beat(ing) Zico" is real.
Titanfall 2... I retired from it in 2023 as the hardcore players made it impossible to enjoy, especially the dude on Reddit who happily admitted to trolling lobbies. Still the only game on my account with more than 1,000 hours.
Resogun... played it at PS4 launch, and I'm still playing it in 2025.
I realize that Astro Bot is literally a robot, but to classify the game as sci-fi seems a bit of a stretch to me.
To me, scifi is Soma, System Shock, and even Headlander (maybe im thinking more 70s scifi, ooooh, there should be a Zardos game! Copywrite, me! Patent pending😂)
Maybe there should be a distinction between a scifi setting and thru-and-thru scifi, otherewise Space Invaders should be in there
Where is no man's sky? There's many things I could say but I'll just say this. To not include probably one of the most engaging sci-fi operas in gaming history is criminal.
Astrobot is as Sci fi as my left trainer. Elite Dangerous is a Sci fi game. No man's sky is a Sci fi game. The outer world's is a Sci fi game.
@Slippship agreed 100%..resogun is a defender rip off albeit a very good one but its a shoot em' up. Where is deus ex mankind divided? So many better games that have been over looked should have had entry's here.
mass effect top of the chart yes it is the best sci fi game with a great deep world with amazing story, lore and characters.
the question is do remasters of ps3 games count as best ps4 games?
Control only 18? What madness is this?
I'm a sci-fi fan and have played all 20 games on the list except that VR game that never will be available in VR2, nothing new for me.
My choice for number 1 is Horizon Zero Dawn.
@Northern_munkey No Man's Sky isn't on the list yet because its user score simply isn't high enough to rank in the top 20.
@Quintumply I understand how it works but it's still shocking to me that no man's sky has been overlooked so much..It is a tragedy.
