20. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Special Edition (PS4)

Bethesda's eternal open world RPG got a much needed update on PS4 thanks to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Special Edition. The original PS3 version was a technical mess, but the sprawling adventure is, as you'd hope, much improved one generation later. Featuring enhanced visuals (and a steady framerate!), it's still so easy to get lost in the snowy setting of Skyrim. It might be riddled with decade-old jank, but its gameplay systems are still super addictive, constantly rewarding you for exploring what is a lovingly crafted fantasy world.

19. Spyro: Reignited Trilogy (PS4)

Before Ratchet & Clank, Resistance, and Spider-Man, it was Spyro that gave Insomniac Games its big break on PS1. That first trio of action platformers was wonderful back in the late 90s, but they're even better in Spyro: Reignited Trilogy, a vibrant PS4 remake. It features all three classics with a gorgeous, cartoonish visual makeover and modernised controls. The result is a nostalgic package that equally pleases old fans and new ones alike.

18. God of War III Remastered (PS4)

God of War III Remastered may have been one of the last hurrahs for the series’ old-school, fixed perspective style – but it’s still an absolute doozy. Presented pristinely on PS4, this trilogy closer has some of the most epic moments you’ll find on any console, including an opening boss fight against Poseidon that remains utterly jaw-dropping even today.

17. Ratchet & Clank (PS4)

This reimagining of the very first game in the series was made to accompany the movie, but ended up totally eclipsing it. Blending a familiar adventure with some new weapons and gadgets, Ratchet & Clank is both nostalgic and fresh. It's a visual treat, with exquisite animation and fun shooting/platforming gameplay. This is one gorgeous adventure that both fans and newcomers will adore.

16. Okami HD (PS4)

A PS2 game that's definitely deserving of a PS4 remaster, Okami remains a classic action adventure. Capcom's lovingly made tile still holds up in all the right areas, from its amazing art direction to its innovative gameplay design. A classic in the eyes of many.

15. Valkyria Chronicles Remastered (PS4)

SEGA's painterly strategy series all started with the original Valkyria Chronicles — a touching wartime tale which follows the brilliantly named Welkin Gunther. Under his command, Squad 7 looks to protect its homeland against the seemingly unstoppable empire. In its lovely visual style and engaging tactical gameplay, Valkyria Chronicles quickly established itself as a modern classic in the strategy RPG genre, and this remaster is the best way to play it on PlayStation.

14. Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster (PS4)

Before Final Fantasy VI came along and made a whole generation realise that Japanese RPGs could tell mature stories with great characters, Final Fantasy IV basically set the standard. The plot focuses on Cecil, a warrior at odds with himself after his kingdom sparks the flames of war. Cecil's own character development is at the heart of events, but he's joined by a varied and delightful cast of characters as he seeks the truth of the world and its inhabitants. Still an expertly paced game with loads of memorable moments.

13. Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch Remastered (PS4)

A remaster of what many consider one of the PS3's finest RPGs, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch Remastered provides a perfect excuse to experience — or re-experience — this charming adventure. With an eye-catching art direction (and animated cutscenes crafted by renowned Japanese outfit Studio Ghibli), Ni no Kuni is still a delight to behold, and although it can be a bit of a grind, its gameplay also offers a lot of enjoyment through turn based combat and fun characters.

12. Dark Souls Remastered (PS4)

Dark Souls has earned a rabid, loyal fanbase with its uniquely weighty combat, richly realised worlds, and challenging (but fair) gameplay. Lordran is beautifully realised on PS4, its foreboding architecture and often terrifying denizens forcing players to learn from trial and error. Dark Souls isn’t for everyone, but those that persevere will forever praise the Sun.

11. Yakuza: Kiwami 2 (PS4)

Yakuza: Kiwami 2 is one of the strongest instalments in SEGA's series — arguably the strongest, depending on how heavily you value certain elements of this action RPG package. Yakuza 2 on the PS2 was where the franchise truly found its footing, and Kiwami 2 is a straight remake in the stunning Dragon Engine. Crunching combat, expert storytelling, and an absolutely mad range of minigames and side activities make Kiwami 2 a near faultless Yakuza experience.
