Release Date: 6th Jun 2017 (USA) / 7th Jun 2017 (UK/EU)
Available On: PS+ Premium

The granddaddy of anti-gravity racing makes a triumphant return to PlayStation with a gorgeous remaster that brings together content from WipEout HD, Fury, and 2048. The fast and fluid racer plays beautifully, looks gorgeous, and runs like a shiny, metal dream. The recently added VR support is incredibly well implemented too, making this an even better package for PSVR owners. While we’d have preferred an all new entry in the franchise, this serves as a great reminder of why WipEout is so beloved by fans.

Publisher: THQ Nordic / Developer: Bugbear Entertainment
Release Date: 27th Aug 2019 (USA) / 27th Aug 2019 (UK/EU)
Available On: PS+ Extra

Bugbear Entertainment is back with a bombastic new racing game that's all about destruction. With a realistic, physics-based damage modelling system, Wreckfest brings your dreams of a new Destruction Derby game to life in great style. It does have some technical hang-ups, but with surprising variety in its gameplay and a unique brand of madcap action, this is well worth taking for a spin.

Publisher: Activision / Developer: Beenox
Release Date: 21st Jun 2019 (USA) / 21st Jun 2019 (UK/EU)

A wonderful recreation of the PS1 original, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is a real blast from the past. Drift boosting through beautifully rebuilt tracks in the generous Adventure mode or taking the racing online is a lot of fun. Much like the PS1 title it's based on, this is an arcade racing game with tight controls, surprising difficulty, and lots to see and do. Despite some areas that could've done with modernising, this is probably just about the best kart racer on PS4.

Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment / Developer: Polyphony Digital
Release Date: 4th Mar 2022 (USA) / 4th Mar 2022 (UK/EU)

Gran Turismo 7 is the more complete package that fans have been wanting since the previous game's focus on esports. While it does feature excellent online multiplayer, the main draw is the huge, "Car-PG" single-player offering. Hundreds of cars are yours to collect and tune up, and the wonderful handling makes each one a pleasure to drive. The GT Café makes all the events, licence tests, and other activities easier to digest, and it's hard to not be won over by the sheer volume of information packed in about car culture and history. A return to form for the series.

1. Gran Turismo Sport (PS4)

Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment / Developer: Polyphony Digital
Release Date: 17th Oct 2017 (USA) / 18th Oct 2017 (UK/EU)

Sony's flagship racing series has had its ups and downs, but Gran Turismo Sport was an especially unusual step in the history of the franchise. Primarily focusing on online multiplayer and esports, the game featured the same gorgeous visuals and impressive handling you'd expect, but without most of the content that fans love. Again, the game itself looks and plays great, and its online racing is rather innovative, encouraging good sportsmanship above all. There's still a lot to like about Sport, but the meatier Gran Turismo 7 is arguably the stronger entry overall.
